Reflection
Valentines day is over but still we need to deal with our hearts. In our normal life, as
human, we need to love and to be loved back. Once we are committed in a relationship which
became stronger and stronger as the time goes by, we are ready to proceed to the next level
which is marriage. After marriage, we are ready to build a family that is compose of Mother,
Father, and a little evil, I mean a baby. But before bearing a baby, theres some diseases we need
to deal with during our pregnancy. Speaking of, how does this heart (literally) of us affects our
pregnancy? This question is answered after I read a book which talks about Cardiovascular
disorders and Pregnancy and I will make a reflection about it.
As a woman, when we know that we are dealing with cardiovascular disorders, and we
are planning to have a baby, we first need to see our Obstetrician to make choices about
pregnancy for counselling that should include contraceptive advice, quantification of maternal
and fetal risks during pregnancy, and discussion of possible long-term morbidity and mortality
after pregnancy. And once we are pregnant, our general condition and circulatory system should
all be assessed and monitored. Therefore, we can manage our heart problems and be able to
complete our pregnancies successfully.
Some woman with Cardiovascular disorders (it depends what type) are advised not to get
pregnant because of low chance of successful pregnancy due to increase blood volume that may
overwhelmed their heart. If I am this woman, I should take their advice for me to be safe and
prevent severe complications that will end up my life six feet under the ground. There are still
other alternatives so that I can have a child to live with and to grow old with such as adopting a
child. If the Obstetrician said that I can bear a child but with minimal chance of completing it,
then I will be pregnant because there are advanced technologies that will help me to have a
successful pregnancy outcome. Also, I will periodically visit my obstetrician to monitor my
cardiovascular status and also the fetal well-being.
