Lesson Plan for S.1 students

Duration: 30minutes

Aim: Enable students to experience how effective imitation is when learning rhythm

Mode: Rhythm introduction, rhythm ensemble, discussion

Schedule

Content Objective Duration

1 Rhythm introduction
-Teacher will demonstrate eight simple
rhythm patterns one by one by body
percussion.
.
-Teacher will neither provide any scores to
students nor show the rhythm on the screen
and whiteboard.
- Then, students need to imitate the rhythm
introduced.
-Teacher may invite specific student or the
whole class to imitate the rhythm.
-If some students suffer from one rhythm
pattern, teacher can invite students who is
capable to this rhythm to do demonstration.
- It is estimated that one to two minutes are
needed for each rhythm pattern.
- The main objective of rhythm 10
introduction is to emphasis imitation is minutes
an effective way to learn different
patterns of rhythm.
-By not providing scores and not
showing the rhythm on the screen and
whiteboard, students can straightly
focus on imitation instead of relying
too much on reading scores.
-Enable students to experience playing
body percussion, the most natural
instrument, in order to arouse their
interest on learning rhythm
-Can take care diverse population of
students because the rhythm patterns
vary for simple to complicated

-The eight rhythm patterns could be found in

Michael Jacksons song, Heal The World,
which will be introduced to students in the
second section.

half with students instead of running through
the whole music.
-Again, teacher can invite students who is
capable to play difficult rhythm to do
demonstration.
3 Reflection
-Teacher may guide students to make
reflection on the following issues:
(i) Why body percussion is chosen when
learning rhythm
(ii) The relationship between the eight rhythm
patterns and Heal The World
(iii) The reason of not providing any scores to
students when learning the eight rhythm
patterns at the very beginning
(iv) Why the song Heal The World is
chosen for this lesson
-Teacher may invite students to express their
views on the above issues.
-Provide rhythm scores to students during
reflection
-At last, teacher need to do debriefing on the
music and body percussion, to
students
-Arouse students interest by playing
pop music so to reduce students
negative image of music lessons
-Provide simple musical sense for
students who do not learn any musical
instrument
-Create advanced musicianship
training for students who learn
musical instruments
-By explaining relationship between 8 minutes
the eight rhythm patterns and Heal
The World, students can review what
they have learnt in this lesson
-Ensuring students understand how
useful imitation is when learning
music
-Enable students to think in different
angles by discussion and sharing
-By explaining the reason of choosing
Heal The World as learning
materials, teacher can tell students
music lesson is not only related to
music, but also related to social issue
and attitude.
-Since the words in Heal The World
are not difficult for S.1 students, it can
ensure students can engage in the
lesson under suitable English level.
