Tutorial 1: Analysis of DC/DC Converters with Lossy Elements
Q1. Using volt-sec balance principle, derive equations for the output voltages of Buck, Buck-Boost
and Boost Converters.

Q2. 2.1 All the devices in the power converter shown in Fig. Q2 below are ideal and only the
inductor has a resistive component RL,

a) Derive an expression for the output voltage.


b) If Vin=12V, RL=0.1, R=50 , find the maximum voltage obtainable. Compare the result with
the ideal one.

2.2 Find an expression for the boost converter output when the inductor is lossy. Explain the
existence of a maximum voltage with regard to the converter parameters.

Q3. Find the output expression for the practical buck converter with the elements shown below.
