EN 1563:2012

Overview of Changes Addition of solid-solution strengthened ductile

cast irons

Mechanical Properties always in

dependence on the wall thickness

No material grades by hardness

New side-by-side cast sample

Sample dimension in dependence of

the relevant wall thickness

New annexes

EN 1563:2012

Solid-solution strengthened GJS

Up to now, only one family of material

grades were defined: ferritic to pearlitic
spheroidal graphite cast irons

EN 1563:2012 introduces a new material
family: solid-solution strengthened ferritic
spheroidal graphite cast iron (cast iron with
nodular graphite and a ferritic matrix, that is
hardened through silicon)

First international standard to establish

high-silicon containing DCI ISO 1083:2004,
in Annex A (normative): Spheroidal
graphite cast irons with high silicon content

Siempelkamp Giesserei, 2012 3/16

EN 1563:2012

Solid-solution strengthened GJS

For the first time in a national standard a chemical analysis is
recommended for ductile cast Iron.
Appendix A describes informative possible chemical compositions,
graphit structure, the iron matrix etc.

Solid-solution strengthened GJS

Annex A
maximum pearlite content 5%

maximum free cementite 1%

up to 20% Form III especially

in heavy walls acceptable

higher Rp0,2/Rm-ratio

changed strength/hardnessratio!
Higher proof strength at lower ardness!
Spheroidal graphite cast irons Relation between Brinell hardness
and 0,2 % - proof strength

EN 1563:2012

Dependence on the Wall Thickness

Up to now the mechanical properties are defined for

separately cast samples and for cast-on samples.

In EN 1563:2012 the mechanical properties of each family

of material grades is defines in dependence on the wall
thickness regardless of the type of sample used.

Designation of the sample type

S separately cast sample
U cast-on sample
is omitted!
( C for samples cut from the casting is mantained)

Three ranges of wall thickness are considered!

EN 1563:2012

Types of Cast Samples

Up to now, three types of cast samples were defined

separately cast samples (sample, that is cast in a separate mold at the same
time and under representative manufacturing conditions as the casting)
cast-on samples (sample, that is cast attached to the casting)
samples cut from the casting

EN 1563:2012 added a new type of cast sample

side-by-side cast sample (sample, that is produced in the same mold as the
casting using the same sprue)

Siempelkamp Giesserei, 2012 7/16

EN 1563:2012

Relevant Wall Thickness

In the current version of the
standard no dependence of the
sample size from the relevant wall
thickness of the casting is imposed

In EN1563:2012 the size of the

sample has to be chosen according
to the relevant wall thickness in four
ranges

Relevant wall thickness:

Wall thickness representative for the
casting, defined for the
determination of the cast samples to
which the mechanical properties
apply

EN 1563:2012

Guidance Values for Hardness In EN1563:2012 the designation by

hardness is omitted.
Guidance values for the hardness of the

sheroidal graphite cast iron grade by hardness Annex C.
was possible
