Chapter 1

Origins of the OKelly

Yet this man was a king, and had his royalties all around him
his forest, his abbey, and many an armed castle, and peaceful
monastery, and fair dwelling house were his; and thousands of
acres of far stretching black or brown bog; and rood upon rood of
verdant meadow and rich tillage.

Dublin University Magazine on Rory oge OMore

High Treason

Ferdinandus OKelly, alias Fergananym

OKelly late of Corballi, in Queens Coun-
ty, horseman, was attained for high trea-
son on the 25th of September 1573 at
Maryborough, owing to his joining in Re-
bellion with Rory oge OMore.

At that time he was in possession of Cor-

bally, Kilkefield (Kilfeacle) and Tecoline,
all in the Barony of Ballyadams, which
has been granted to him buy the crown in
1562.

Eliz. Fiant. No 490

During the reign of the She Wolf (i.e. Queen Elizabeth) the Irish gentry for miles around re-
ceived orders to attend a Court in the Rath of Mullaghmast. They assembled in large numbers,
and rather late to arrive was an OMore, from the Queens County side of the Barrow, with his
son Shamus and an attendant named OKelly.

On nearing the Rath the father remarked that it was strange after so many had entered that
none came out again, and as he was an old man, if danger was ahead, it would be better for him
to lose his life than his son, who was only a boy, and so he would dismount and enter the Rath
while Shamus and OKelly remained where they were. The son tried to dissuade him from go-
ing, and let him go instead; but go the old man would, and off he started, having given his son
instructions that if he reappeared at the en-
trance of the Rath with his hat off, they were
to understand that there was danger, and to
gallop off immediately, or if he did not ap-
pear within seven minutes they were to ride
off, and warn anyone they might meet on the
way to return home.

Old OMore in a very short time reappeared

at the entrance fighting his way through the
soldiery. Shamus and OKelly rode to his as-
sistance, helped him to mount, and the three,
putting spurs to their horses, galloped away,
and never drew rein till they had reached the Barrow opposite to Rheban Castle. On their ap-
proach the waters parted in front of them, and they rode dry-shod to the opposite bank, on
reaching which the river flowed on as before.

...After some time they heard the faint baying of hounds in the direction they had come from,
and as it got louder and nearer, OMore gave orders to mount, as he said bloodhounds must be
on their track, and off they again started. Eventually they separated; OMore and OKelly cross-
ing the Queens county hills got safe into the County Waterford; but Shamus remained in the
Ballyadams district, hiding in the house of a farmer named OLalor.

In a day or two, news reached them that the English had issued a proclamation from Mul-
laghmast, ordering that all boys of a certain age belonging to the OMore sept should be put to
death. Consequently Shamus got the farmers permission to assume his name on condition he
worked form him without wages. But one day, while Shamus was plowing with a team of oxen,
a knight rode into the field, whom OLalor recognized as Shawn-a-feeka (which means Sean of
the Pike); he dismounted, and, going up to the farmer, asked whose the boy was, and OLalor,
in terror of being found out in a lie, acknowledged it was Shamus OMore. Very good, said
Shawn a-feeka. As I cannot catch the old fox, Ill content myself with the cub; and walking up
to Shamus he told him he would have to return with him to Mullaghmast.

Before mounting he showed Shamus a bowarra he held in his hand, and asked him if he knew
what it was. Shamus replied that he had never before seen the like of it, and so was told to hold
it while Shawn-a-feeka remounted. As soon as he had his foot in the stirrup, with his back
turned, Shamus, taking aim, pulled the trigger and shot him dead between the joints of the ar-
mor at the back of the neck; he then mounted the horse and galloped off.
Rorie Oge O More and Cormocke Mack Cormocke O Connor, accompanied not with above 140
men and boyes, on the third monethe, burned betweene Vii. And viii C. thatched howsies, in a
market towne called the Naas; they had not one horseman, nor one shot with theim; they ran
through the town, beinge open, like haggs and furies of hell, with flakes of fier fastened on
pooles ends, and so fiered the low thatched howsies; and being a great windie night, one howse
took fiere of another in a moment; they tarried not half an houre in the town, neither stoode
they upon killinge or spoylinge of any. There was above fyve hundred mennes boddies in the
towne manlyke enough in appearance, but neither manfull, nor wakeful as it seamed; for they
confesse they were all aslepe in their bedde, after they had filled themselves and surfeyted upon
their patrone day; which day is celebrated, for the most part, of the people of this country
birthe, with gluttonye and idollatrye as farre as they dare.

~A letter from Lord Deputy Sydney, 1577

They were asleep in a cottage in the midst of the thick oak forest of Leix, when the enemy, guid-
ed by a treacherous domestic, a huntsman of OMores, burst like a storm upon them. What
must have been the anguish of his soul to have left behind him in her blood the partner of his
heart and life, and to feel that he had lost her for ever! Was he cruel! If so, he met with cruel
treatment. Was he violent? He might have been so, but so were his opponents; perhaps it was
the hard nature of the times.

With the death of OMore the regal power of his house seems to have been extinguished. His
abbey of Leix, and royal forest, and large possessions were distributed among Elizabeths favor-
ite soldiers; but the oaks, which remain to this day, and have the name of being planted by his
hand, have not passed away.

These counties presented a nearly continual scene of warfare between the colonists and ancient
inhabitants, the Moores and the other septs having risen in insurrection and been suppressed no
less than eighteen times between Queen Marys settlement and the accession of James I. In 1607
they were brought so low that Sir Arthur Chichester concluded they might be easily compelled
to transplant. If not transplanted he thought, they would be utterly extinguished.
Chapter 2
The Clans Disperse
[Francis Cosby] was authorized to exercise Martial law, and inflect capital
punishment, at pleasure. The gallows became his favorite implement of
death, as the cheapest mode of dispatching the surrounding proprietory,
and he, accordingly, had one erected near his house in the neighborhood of
Stradbally Abbey, upon a spot, to this day called Gallows-hill.
Here he kept up a continual scene of execution for many years, hanging the
people in numbers, and not unfrequently [sic] suspending them alive in
chains, with loaves of bread placed before them, in order to render their
death more painful.

Thence forward by that painful way they pas,
Forth to an hill, that was both steep and hy;
On top whereof a sacred chappell was,
And eke a little Hermitage thereby,
Wherein an aged holy man did lye,
That day and night said his devotion
Ne other worldly business did apply;
His name was heavenly Contemplation;
Of God and goodnesse was his meditation.

From Dublin to Philipstown the road is uninteresting. In the course of our survey we ascended Croghan
Hill, a conical elevation, for it scarcely deserves the name of mountain, although it forms an interesting
object for thirty miles round, and commands an extensive view of the surrounding country. There is a
cairn on the top, and near it a cemetery, still used by the Catholics, about which are a number of upright
grave-stones, bearing inscriptions of the date of 1714 and thereabouts. These stones were once, as Ser-
geant Malone informed us, mistaken by a party of police for a company of rebels coming over the hill.

From Croghan Hill great numbers of islands, as the natives call them, but more properly oases, or ele-
vated spots of land rising from the bog, may be seen;--of these, Knocknarin is remarkable, as being a
refuge for vagabonds and malefactors. Though encompassed by the Bog of Allen, which in winter or wet
weather may be difficult to cross, and, before any drainage was effected, was wholly impassable by ordi-
nary means, they are covered with excellent soil.

Here, as in the other baronies we found a superabundant populationfor the most part, as a matter of
course, unemployed. Between potato time and harvest the distress is general, and very great; and in
consequence of it, fevers are prevalent.
Milk is a luxury here. Sergeant Malone informed us, that many a man who sends his milk to the town,
eats his potatoes without any; and he knew one man who had only three pints of milk in the year. Young
men of from sixteen to thirty years of age (called almost invariably boys) earn from thirty to forty shil-
lings a year as farmers servants; and these, though half naked and half starved, are far better off than
the mere labourers, who are often in debt, to the amount of nine or ten pounds. The poor people are
sadly off for bedding; they can scarcely, in fact, be in a worse condition. A family of six or seven have
usually nothing but a blanket and a half to cover them; straw, for the most part, composes their bed
sometimes the bare floor. The clothes which they wear in the day serve them for the night also, for
they have no change.
The dress of the labourers is what is called a Handy Down, or outside shade, which costs 5s., or a sol-
diers old coat turned. To clothe a labourer in frieze, would cost twenty or thirty shillings a year; some
of them possess a frieze coat for Sundays, but the generality (to use the words of a witness) have not a
stitch but what they have on their bones.
The land is principally in tillage, is greatly impoverished, and is much more frequently ploughed than
formerly. On the borders of Croghan Hill, oats are sown for five or six years in succession. The small
farmers have often from one to six well-bred sheep, whose wool supplies them with their frieze clothes.
The women spin it, and get it woven.

The beggars in this district are very numerous; they sometimes pass through Philipstown, to the num-
ber of three or four hundred a day, are often tipsy, and circulate stories of malicious tendency.

Before leaving Philipstown let me once more advert to the condition of the people in its neighbour-
hood. Their food is of the poorest description (the coarse potatoes called lumpers) and obtained in
quantities barely sufficient to keep the machine of life in languid motion. To use their own words, ut-
tered with great pathos and feeling,--We are only just kept breathing,Our eyes are only just kept
open. I have witnessed scenes that would awaken commiseration in the coldest and the hardest heart,
and some of these I have endeavoured to describe, faithfully, without the slightest shadow of exaggera-
tion. I have seen young and helpless children, almost naked and without food, exposed to the cruel in-
fluences of the weather, in huts which should have afforded them protection; and I have seen old peo-
ple, afflicted severely by asthmas and rheumatic attacks, lying in hovels without either window or
chimney, with nothing for their bed but the bare damp floor, or a thin layer of straw. Can it, I again
ask, can it surprise us, when people, habituated to such appalling wretchedness, and instigated by min-
gled feelings or revenge and despair, commit crimes, at the bare relation of which human nature shud-
ders? The Irish are a patient, as well as an oppressed people, or they would not have submitted so long
to the hardships they endure.
Kings County has been the scene of many cruelties. A man taking a farm, from which another has been
ejected, will probably find his horses without ears, or otherwise maimed, and his cattle houghed, that
is, the sinews of the hinder legs cut. A grave dug near his house, with a note in it, is considered a friend-
ly mode of warning him of his danger. If these do not produce the desired effect, they set fire to his
house, or shoot him; and cruelty has been carried to such excess, that whilst the house was burning, the
inhabitants have been kept in by monsters armed with pitchforks.

Dear St. Brigid of the kine [cows]
Bless these little fields of mine,
The pastures and the shady trees,
Bless the butter and the cheese,
Bless the cows with coats of silk,
And the brimming pails of milk,
Bless the hedgerows, and I pray
Bless the seed beneath the clay,
Bless the hay and bless the grass,
Bless the seasons as they pass,
And heavens blessing will prevail,
BrigidMary of the Gael.

Prayer to St. Brigid

I entered some of the hovels and the scenes which
presented themselves were such as no tongue or pen
can convey the slightest idea of. In the first, six
famished and ghastly skeletons, to all appearances
dead, were huddled in a corner on some filthy straw,
their sole covering what seemed a ragged horsecloth...I
approached with horror, and found by a low moaning
they were alivethey were in fever, four children, a
woman and what had once been a manSuffice it to
say, that in a few minutes I was surrounded by at least
200 such phantoms, such frightful specters as no
words can describe, [suffering] from famine or from
fever.

Bernard Kelly

We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ire-

land, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and
indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and
government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extin-
guished except by the destruction of the Irish people.

John Joseph Jack Kelly
And so it is that our two nations, divided by distance, have been united by
history. No people ever believed more deeply in the cause of Irish freedom than the
people of the United States. And no country contributed more to building my own
than your sons and daughters. They came to our shores in a mixture of hope and
agony, and I would not underrate the difficulties of their course once they arrived
in the United States. They left behind hearts, fields, and a nation yearning to be
free. It is no wonder that James Joyce described the Atlantic as a bowl of bitter
tears.
