MKO BEGINNING SECOND WEEK OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
AND DIALOGUE ON EDUCATION REFORM

Feb. 14, 2017 Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Following a very successful first session at Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation on February 9th, and the
confirmation of several more sessions over the next six weeks, the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak
(MKO) Secretariat is beginning its second week of community-based engagement and dialogue on
education reform for the MKO communities.
The objective of the engagement sessions is to listen to the voices of parents and community
members, and to document what they think needs to be done to improve education in their particular
community and across MKO territory, said Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson. We all recognize the
urgent need for education funding that reflects the geography and the costs associated with providing
education in the north, including the capital costs for high schools in all our northern communities,
stated Grand Chief North Wilson.
In addition to advancing education specifically for the MKO First Nations within the region, the
community engagements will ultimately inform the joint efforts of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN)
and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) on First Nations education reform. Specific task
teams reflecting different aspects of life-long learning, including the task teams focused on funding and
on the unique needs of northern and remote schools, are a key part of the national education reform
process over the next number of months.
The joint task team dedicated to the unique needs of northern and remote communities is important to
advancing education for the MKO First Nations. The MKO community engagement work, in
collaboration with our regional and national education partners, will ensure that the northern Manitoba
First Nations perspective informs and guides the work of this particular task team focused on northern
and remote schools, concluded Grand Chief North Wilson.
As part of the engagement and dialogue process, there also will be a regional gathering for invited
guests scheduled for Thompson March 22nd, and an education forum for MKO Chiefs to discuss and
share the outcome of the engagement sessions.
