Journal Bearing Inspection

1. Clean the components of the bearing assemblies using an approved solvent and
lint-free cloth.

2. Visually inspect the white metal bearing surfaces for scoring (or other evidence of
contact), material defects (pitting or cracking) and failure of adhesion (of the white
metal).

3. Visually inspect the bearing pads, pivot buttons, keys, inner liners and key liners
for scoring, indentations or other damage. Pay particular attention to the spherical
surfaces of the pivot buttons, as the bearing pads pivot around these surfaces.

4. Visually inspect the oil distribution and drainage holes for cleanliness.

5. Visually inspect the oil seal rings for damage, freedom of movement and
radial/axial clearance.

6. Visually inspect the rotor journal surfaces for scratches, grooves or pick-up of
white metal from the bearing surfaces.

Refurbishment of Defects

Followings are Guidance for an acceptably low risk of failure until the next scheduled
maintenance opportunity.

a) If there is evidence of failure of adhesion of the white metal, the bearing pad should
be replaced.

b) The severity of material defects, such as pitting or cracking, can be assessed by

carrying out a dye penetrant test to estimate the depth of the flaws.

c) The severity of contact defects, such as scoring, can usually be assessed visually.

d) Material, contact and other surface defects can be removed from white metal
bearing surfaces by scraping.

NOTE: Bearing setting level require adjustment before reuse.

e) If a large amount of material has to be removed by scraping, the bearing may be

unsuitable for reuse.
If the white metal surface has been scraped, use steel wool to lightly burnish the
surface to obtain a smooth brushed finish.

MHI BUSINESS
CONFIDENTIAL
Turbine and Auxiliaries PAGE 123

e) Defects on the rotors are to be removed, if at all possible, because of the difficulty
and expense of replacement.

Small defects are to be removed carefully by manual stoning.

Assessment of the significance of noted defects is a

specialized subject which could require manufacturer
/ vendor input.

1. Clean the components of the thrust bearing assembly using an

approved solvent and lint-free rags.

2. Clean the threaded fasteners with a wire brush, and the threaded
holes with compressed air.

3. Visually inspect the shoes, shoe supports and leveling plates for
damage and wear.

4. Visually inspect the base ring for damage and wear.

5. Visually inspect the oil seal rings for wear, and the corresponding
parts of the rotor for scoring.

6. Visually inspect the white metal bearing surfaces for scoring (or other
evidence of contact), material defects (pitting or cracking) and failure of adhesion
(of the white metal).

The thrust bearing shoes, and the shoe supports can suffer from cavitation
erosion, due to air entrapment.

Any shoes exhibiting the above described indications (particularly material

defects or failure of adhesion) should be replaced.

7. Visually inspect the thrust collar for flatness.

8. Perform magnetic particle testing on the thrust collar.

9. Carry out a surface contact (blueing) test on the thrust shoes using a surface
plate. The minimum acceptable contact area is 75%.

Any shoes not meeting this requirement should be replaced.

Turbine Alignment

1. Before and during turbine coupling alignment, it is important that the

rotors remain in the correct axial position K position.

This is a manufacturer/vendor designation normally used while setting the

axial clearances, ensure that the rotor can be turned without blade or seal
axial contact.

Alignment must be performed with the rotors in the

K position. Any deviation can cause misalignment
and turbine damage.

MHI BUSINESS
CONFIDENTIAL
Turbine and Auxiliaries PAGE 140

2. Ensure that the bearings of the rotors to be turned are lubricated.

3. Align the match marks made during coupling dismantling.

4. Perform an individual run out check on the couplings as follows:

(i) Turn the rotors so as to bring the match mark of both coupling halves to
the top.

(ii) Mount a dial indicator with its magnetic base at the top on the Gen End
coupling half, and adjust it to read from the periphery of the Gov End
coupling half.

(iii) Turn the Gov End rotor slowly.

(iv) Record the dial indicator reading every 45 degrees (8 readings).

(v) Repeat the above procedure with the dial indicator mounted on the Gov
End coupling half, and reading from the Gen End coupling half.

6. Measure the concentricity (offset) of the coupling, as follows:

(i) Turn the rotors to bring the match mark of both coupling halves to the top.

(ii) Mount an universal dial indicator/bracket, with a jacking bolt at one of the
jacking bolt holes on the Gen End coupling half, and adjust it to read from the
periphery of the Gov End coupling half

(iii) Turn the Gov End rotor slowly. Record the dial indicator reading every 90
degrees (4 readings).

(iv) Rotate the Gen End rotor 180 degrees.

(v) Repeat the turning and recording process, taking readings at the same four
locations.

(vi) Average the two readings for each location.

(vii) Subtract the 0 degree average reading from the 180 degrees average reading,
and divide by 2 to obtain the magnitude of vertical offset.

(viii) Repeat the process at 90 degrees and 270 degrees to obtain the magnitude of
horizontal offset.

(i) Turn the rotors to bring the match mark of both coupling halves to the top.

(ii) Measure and record the distance between the coupling faces with an inside
micrometer or cylinder gauge (refer to Figure 3-1) every 90 degrees (4 readings).

(iii) Rotate the Gen End rotor 180 degrees.

(iv) Repeat the measuring process at the same four locations.

(v) Average the two readings for each location.

(vi) Subtract the 0 degree average reading from the 180 degrees average reading to
obtain the difference in parallelism in the vertical plane.

(vii) Repeat the process at 90 degrees and 270 degrees to obtain the difference in
parallelism in the horizontal plane.

Overview of the Main Turbine Turning Gear

1. The Main Turbine Turning gear is an electric motor driven device, which turns
the turbine rotor elements at low speed (approximately 3 rpm).

2. The primary function is;

- To reduce rotor distortion (due to uneven cooling, and sagging of the rotors
under their own weight) to a minimum while the turbine is cooling following a
period of operation.

- To reduce rotor eccentricity and bearing vibration during startup.

The turbine turning gear must also be available prior to, and during, startup.

3. The turning gear and its AC motor drive is installed between the LP cylinder
and the generator.
