QUESTION 1 (CO4:PO1)

List and define THREE terms in total energy principle and also list THREE assumptions in
deriving Bernoulli Equation in a steady flow.

QUESTION 2 (CO4:PO3)

Cyberjaya is a planned city that has been developed as an intelligent city with modern and
grand architectures. The population of Cyberjaya is estimated to be over 200 000 in year 2021.
Water supply to Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin (Masjid Besi) and Multimedia University is
distributed through two (2) main pipelines from the nearby water treatment plant. The treated
water supply is being distributed to tank 1 at Majid Besi through a 250 mm pipelines (Pipe 1)
and tank 2 at Multimedia Universiti through 400 mm distribution pipelines (Pipe 2) as shown in
Figure Q2. The flow rate in pipeline 2 is 50,000 L/hr.

a) You are the hydraulic engineer in charged; you need to check the existing velocity in
pipe 1 and pipe 2, and the absolute pressure head in tank 1 and 2. The flow rate in
pipeline 1 is 40% less than flow rate in pipeline 2 and the head loss in pipe 1 and pipe 2

are and respectively. (Take Patm= 101.3kPa)

b) In the year 2018, a new area known as Cyber Height Town will be developed and
supplied with water through delivery pipe 3. If the velocity in the new pipeline 3 is
expected to be 0.2 m/s, proposed suitable diameter for the new pipeline if the flow in
pipeline 2 will splits half into pipeline 3.

Note: State all the assumptions made.

QUESTION 3 (CO4:PO3)

Figure Q3 shows a square tank, with cross-sectional area of 4 m2 and 2 m height, has a 4 cm
diameter sharp edged orifice located at its bottom. The discharge coefficient of the orifice is
0.55. Taking datum at point 2;

a) Find the head producing flow if the water level has become stable and the theoretical
discharge of the water leaving the tank is a constant rate of 0.005 m3/s.
b) Calculate the actual velocity of jet at vena contracta if the diameter of the jet is 3cm.
c) Find the time in minutes for the level to fall from 3m to 1m above the orifice when the
inflow is turned off.

*Stated any assumptions used to solve the problem using Bernoulli Equation.

QUESTION 4 (CO4:PO3)
A rectangular plate as shown in Figure Q4, weighing 100N is suspended vertically by a hinge on
the top horizontal edge, O. The centre of gravity of the plate, G is 150mm from the hinge. A
horizontal jet water 25mm diameter, whose axis is 300mm below the hinge imposes normally on
the plate with a velocity of 10 m/s. Determine:

i) The horizontal force applied at the center of gravity to maintain the plate in its vertical
position as shown in Figure Q4(a).
ii) The corresponding velocity of the jet, if the plate is deflected through 40 as shown in
Figure Q4(b) and the same resultant force, P continues to act at the center of gravity
of the plate, G.
