LESSON PLAN: 6.1 Lines, Line Segments, and Rays (What is Geometry?)

LESSON DATE: January 30th 2017

RATIONALE: For students to explore the term geometry

CORE STANDARDS:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.1
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and
perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly
to the text as the basis for the answers.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.3

Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or

concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to
time, sequence, and cause/effect.

GRADE & LESSON APPROPRIATENESS: In the past, students have looked at

3-dimensional shapes, were asked to identify 2- dimensional shapes, edges, and
vertices (corners) within these idealized shapes. The focus of the unit is to, investigate
line segments, rays, and lines, explore polygons (including triangles and quadrangles),
and draw and measure angles. In order to have a foundation with geometry terms, it is
essential students understand the Greek background. After the students take the
pre-assessment for geometry, they will partake in a lesson which questions the origin
of geometry.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will discuss the meaning of geometry.
Students will describe line segments, lines, and rays.
BEGINNING: (10 mins)

Teacher led station: Reviewing rays, lines, line segments
A line a straight set of points that extend in opposite directions
without ending.
A ray is a part of a line that has one endpoint and extends in one
direction without ending.
A line segment a part of a line between two endpoints.
A point is a place. It has no length, width, or thickness.
A plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface that extends forever.

Euclid
Euclid was a great Greek mathematician. Although little is known about his
early and personal life, he went on to contribute greatly in the field of
mathematics and came to be known as the Father of Geometry. Euclid studied
at Platos ancient school in Athens, a place that was only meant for rich people to
attend. He got his mathematical training from the students of Plato.

Euclid is known to have taught mathematics in

Ancient Egypt. He wrote Elements, the most influential
mathematical works of all time, which served as the
main book for teaching mathematics from its
publication until the late 19th or early 20th century.
Elements sparked interest in our side of the world and
mathematicians around the globe for over 2000 years.

Euclid created the different elements of mathematics, such as proofs,

geometric systems, infinite values, factorizations, and the congruence of shapes
all together make Euclidian Geometry. (That is right, he named the geometry
after himself!) His works were heavily influenced
by other Greeks that came before him such as
Aristotle and Thales.

Since biographical information is unusual

for this time period, many researchers believe
that Euclid may have not existed and his works
may have been written by a team of
mathematicians who took the name Euclid.
