Graphing Functions with x and y tables

X-independent variable-you can CHOOSE the values to plug in

Y-dependendent variable-the answer you get from plugging in X

The result

Corresponding points on your graph

How to plug in values to your equation...
y= 4x+2x-3
X Y
y= 4(2)+2(2)-3 2

y= 4(0)+2(0)-3 0

y= 4(1)+2(1)-3 1

-1
y= 4(-1)+2(-1)-3
4
y= 4(4)+2(4)-3
Use the table to plot your coordinates Desmos

x y
-1 -9
0 -3
1 3
2 9
4 21
Graph of a parabola
Parent Function:

y=x2

Vertex is the minimum or maximum of the function

Parabolas are symmetric from their vertex

Keep in mind...ANY number squared will be positive

y=-x2 y=(-x)2
Standard Form
y=ax2+bx+c

y=4x2+2x+8

a= b= c=

y=2x2+1x+3

a= b= c=

y=x2+4

a= b= c=
Finding the Vertex...
From the Graph:

It is the coordinates of the min or max

(0,1)
Finding the Vertex...
From the equation:

x=-b/2a

y=answer when you plug in the x from above

y=2x2+4x+6

a=2 b=4 c=6

Vertex: x=-b/2a -4/(2(2))= -4/4 = -1

y= 2(-1)2+4(-1)+6 =2(1)+(-4)+6 =4
