A STUDY ON THE PRESENT STATUS OF
WATER POLLUTION AND ITS
CONSEQUENCES
A STUDY ON THE PRESENT STATUS OF WATER POLLUTION
AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

Water is one of the prime necessities of life. Without it survival beyond a

few days is impossible. The term water pollution is referred to any type of aquatic
contamination. Human beings have been abusing the water bodies around the world
y disposi g all ki ds of astes i the . We elie e that ater a ash a ay
e erythi g . Due to the activities of human kind, the ponds, lakes, stream, rivers and
oceans are becoming polluted in several parts of the world.

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies like lakes, rivers,

oceans and groundwater. Water pollution is a major global problem which requires
ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels. Water is
typically referred to as polluted when it is impaired by antropogenic contaminants
and either does not support human use, such as drinking water, or undergoes a
marked shift in its ability to support its constituent biotic communities, such as fish.
Natural phenomena such as volcanoes, algae blooms, storms, and earthquakes also
cause major changes in water quality and the ecological status of water. Decisions on
the type and degree of treatment and control of wastes and the disposal and use of
adequately treated waste water, must be based on a consideration of all technical
factors of each drainage basin, in order to prevent any further contamination or hard
to the environment.

The survey method was used to collect the data. This data was collected
through the distribution of questionnaire among the houses. A questionnaire is a form
prepared and distributed to secure responses to certain questions. A population is
generally a large collection of individuals or objects that is the main focus of scientific
query. The population selected for conducting survey was Ambalapuzha panchayath
and the selected 30 families are the samples.
In this survey, majority of people collect water from the public taps for their
primary needs. Also all the families had enough drinking water supply taps in their
region. But all the families had an opinion that the water from the public taps was not
filtered. In this survey, it is clear that all the families were responsible for water
pollution. Majority of the people were understood about the need and importance of
water. The people were not tried to clean the water resources. All families had a
common opinon that no remedial programmes undertaken by the Government. The
majority of the people were not bothered about the consequences of water pollution
and they were not much aware about the laws and protocols about the water
pollution. The people in their locality were affected by communicable diseases and
there is also number of mosquitoes become increased due the water pollution.
The study was conducted among 30 families. Here the number of samples were very
small. Therefore this study does not give clear and sufficient data about the present
status of water pollution and its consequences. If the number of samples will increase,
it will gives much informations and this leads to the study become more relevant.

Water pollution is a big problem faced by our society. In this study reveals
that all the people in the society were responsible for water pollution. The majority of
the people were know about the reasons for water pollution and its consequences.
But they were never tried to clean the water resources.
