(p.3/4- Periodic Study Guide- Mr. Kiley-Science)

Concepts/Applications:
What makes object magnetic?

What forces slow down skiers, ice skaters, cyclist, and cars on the
highway?

What happens to velocity when forces of a gravity and air resistance

balance on a falling object?

Use Newtons 2nd Law (F= m x a) to calculate the following:

a) What is the force applied if a 10kg cart is accelerated to 4m/s?

b) If a 25N force accelerates a wagon to 1m/s, what is the mass of the

wagon?

c) What is the acceleration of a 2kg car that can apply a 24N force?

Use Newtons 3nd Law (P= m x v) to calculate the following:

a) What is the momentum of a 4kg ball moving at 5m/s?

b) If a 0.25kg soccer ball, initially traveling at 40m/s, collides with

player and travels 10m/s in the opposite direction.
1) What is the momentum of the ball before the collision?

2) What is the momentum of the ball after the collision?

(p.4/4- Periodic Study Guide- Mr. Kiley-Science)

Use Newtons 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd laws to describe a bicycle collision with an
object that is at rest.

Use Newtons 1st law to describe why passengers move forward when a
moving car applies the brakes.

Helpful Hints:
Review the above concepts from previous AMS sheets, textbook pages, notes from
class, Bell Ringers, and examples from class.
Reread chapter summaries and select paragraphs
Apply test taking strategies: eat/sleep, a little+ a little, ask qs, quiz yourself, plan
of attack
Tutoring- peer groups available every day, prefect help, SL periods
Positive attitude! You can do this!

Vocab:
Force- push or pull that can change motion or shape

What tool is used to measure force? ___________Spring Scale__________________

Net force- Sum of all forces acting on an object

What factors affect the gravity between objects? _____mass____ and

_distance between them

Friction- force that opposes relative motion of an object

Rest- (as in an object at rest)- when it is not moving in respect to a

given frame of reference

Mathematical representation of Newtons 2nd law:

F=mxa

Why is the acceleration of a free-falling objects always constant and

independent of the object itself?
Force of gravity is constant and independent of objects mass (all
objects fall at same rate)

(p.2/4 Periodic2 Study Guide-Mr. Kiley-Science)

Earths acceleration due to gravity is _______9.8____ m/s.

State Newtons 3rd law of motion:

Every action causes equal and opposite reaction ( bat striking ball-
action/reaction)

What is the mathematical representation used to calculate momentum?

p= m x v
Example calculations done as Bell Ringers:
Package in a van question, F=ma, p=mv, and several Bell Ringers

Example Bell Ringer: 1) A 0.8kg ball is traveling at 15m/s. It is kicked by a foot and
travels in the opposite direction at 5m/s.
a) What is the momentum of the ball before it is struck by the foot?

b) What is the momentum after it is kicked?

2) Cue ball striking an 8 ball- force and momentum

3) Force, mass, acceleration questions about the bicycle

(p.3/4- Periodic Study Guide- Mr. Kiley-Science)
Concepts/Applications:
What makes object magnetic?

Attracted to magnets- cobalt, iron and nickel

What forces slow down skiers, ice skaters, cyclist, and cars on the
highway?

Friction and air resistance

What happens to velocity when forces of a gravity and air resistance

balance on a falling object?

Reaches constant velocity (terminal velocity); wont go any faster

Use Newtons 2nd Law (F= m x a) to calculate the following:

d) What is the force applied if a 10kg cart is accelerated to 4m/s?

40N
e) If a 25N force accelerates a wagon to 1m/s, what is the mass of the
wagon?

25kg
f) What is the acceleration of a 2kg car that can apply a 24N force?

12m/s
Use Newtons 3nd Law (p= m x v) to calculate the following:
c) What is the momentum of a 4kg ball moving at 5m/s?

20kg m/s

d) If a 0.25kg soccer ball, initially traveling at 40m/s, collides with

player and travels 10m/s in the opposite direction.
3) What is the momentum of the ball before the collision?
10kg m/s
4) What is the momentum of the ball after the collision?

2.5kg m/s
(p.4/4- Periodic Study Guide- Mr. Kiley-Science)

Use Newtons 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd laws to describe a bicycle collision with an
object that is at rest.

Objects in motion/rest will stay in motion/rest. Bike will strike the

object causing it to move in strait line at constant velocity until
acted upon by other forces. Bike will lose velocity. Transfer
momentum from bike to the object. Person on the boke will fall
forward (in motion).

Use Newtons 1st law to describe why passengers move forward when a
moving car applies the brakes.

Passengers in motion will stay in motion (newtons 1st law)
