Startupi3 @ Al Ameen Engineering College

The Start up i3 is the platform for students to express their innovative ideas in a group. It is
the flagship programme for entrepreneurship development from the Govt. of Kerala. The
workshop was organised by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and the course modules were
designed by Openfuel. The workshop is conducted over a span of 3 days and is generally a
group wise competitive event. Brain storming the ideas in a group will help the students to
ascertain whether their idea is viable or not. The mentoring sessions are organized and made
in such a way that the best ideas are offered pre-incubation facility under KSUM and
Innovative ideas will be shown the best path as to how well the same can be executed.

A team of 5 members from over 9 colleges across boot camps in the state participated in the
programme. The members were identified by the Boot Camp Nodal officer from each
college. The team members were encouraged to interact with all the members of the
workshop to understand the pros and cons of their idea. The event was organised on 19th, 20th
and 21st of July 2016 respectively. The following are the different phases of the workshop
that was organised by the team of trainers were:

Ideate:

Ideation is one of the basic process which has to be shown the right path. Connecting the
Problem of the society and need of the society will create successful enterprise. Connecting
the same with technology will bring out innovative technology products. Kerala Start up
Mission in association with Open fuel will be giving a platform for students to interact with
each other and to through away the barrier of expression.

Innovate:

Innovation needs knowledge, exposing the students to technology will bring out innovation.
The 3 days programme helped the students to identify the core areas they can relate their
studies with innovation. They were encouraged to use the internet to successfully gather
knowledge and be cognizant of the idea they were innovating on.

Incubate:

Kerala Start up Mission gave the unique platform for the students to take their ideas to the
next level. Mentorship and technical expertise helped the students to mould their ideas into
successful products. The pre incubation facility helped the students to get a clear idea on the
infrastructure facilities provided to the start up companies. The companies need not be
registered for coming up with their start up at the initial stage.

The trainers provided a step to step idea for information and incubation procedure for the different
groups of participants. The participant groups interacted with the trainers and with each other to bring
about a business model from their idea. Al Ameen College witnessed 3 days of fun filled but intuitive
and rapid brainstorming sessions from students.

The trainers also provided mentoring sessions to students sharing the stories of famous entrepreneurs
in their journey to success. Apart from the facilitation sessions as photography competition and
Campfire the whole programme showed heights of innovation and rapid metamorphosis from the
students in their respective ideas.
All the ideas presented in the programme were exceptionally innovative and it was quite a dilemma
for the judges to come out with a proper judgement. Yet, the best projects evaluated amongst the lot
were:

First Prize : VOXIO (An innovative technique as an app for hearing and speech impaired group of
people to enjoy entertainment by students of JYOTHI ENGINEERING COLLEGE, Thrissur)
Second Prize : SWACHHBHARAT RAIL & LIMIDO(SwachhBharat Rail focused on effective
human waste disposal of railways and LIMIDIO came out to be a portable device with solar panel and
small wind turbines used to harness energy for applictations like Mobile charging etc. Both ideas were
from the two teams of Al Ameen Engineering College and the second prize was shared between
them)
Third Prize : Royal Fuelio (A novel idea to detect the amount of Fuel left in Enfield Bullet
motorcycles which did not have a fuel meter installed as such of Older Models. The idea was
presented by NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad)

The awards were distributed by Principal,of Al Ameen Engg. College, Dr.GeethaVerma.The event
concluded with the closing remarks from the trainer, Mr. Rohit and the Nodal Officer,
Mr. Shibin Mohamed. The students were addressed and inspired with the idea that getting an award is
not any criteria to have a successful startup and to be a successful Entrepreneur.

Start-Up i3 is a three day workshop for developing the Entrepreneurship abilities

among Professional students. The event was hosted by TocH Institute of Science & Technology,
Arakkunnam, Kochi. The Start-Up i3 is powered by Open Fuel, an organization intended to
bring about changes in the existing perspectives of professional students, urging them to find
their own paths, by helping them to begin their own Start-ups. The program in TIST was second
of its kind in Kerala.

The program kick-started on 19th of October, 2015, at 10a.m. as planned. Students from
different colleges across Kerala participated in the event, making it a huge one. We the 5
students represented Entrepreneurship Development Club of Al-Ameen Engineering College,
Shoranur. As it was our first outside-college event on Entrepreneurship, obviously we were
really excited. The PRO of TIST welcomed us, the delegates of the Start-Up i3 Program, which
really made us held our head high! The fellows of Open Fuel introduced themselves to us and
also gave us a talk on how to cultivate your own start up. Each college is provided with separate
area and some properties along with Wi-Fi accessibility. They taught us how to use those
properties to bring about an idea. According to their instructions we started to plan our idea.
We met up with other students of various colleges. The first day went on, preparing the
ideation chart, a property provided. The lunch was provided by the college authority and was
set up in the hostel mess. Transportation facilities were also provided. Our stay was organized
at a 3 star hotel, 5 kms away from the institution.
On 20th of October 2015, the second day of the event, we were picked up by the
college bus from the hotel to the college. We continued to work on our idea, with the help of
some valuable suggestions from other delegates and also the Coordinators of the program.
Half way through the program, we had to present an advertisement for our idea, which really
helped us to relax and refresh our minds. Our idea was to start a bike/two-wheeler taxi and
pooling service in urban areas. Our motto behind the idea was to reduce the time-wastage of
passengers, during their daily commuting, because of the heavy, rising traffic.
On the third and final day of the event, we had to present our idea in about 5 minutes in
English in-front of all the delegates, and the coordinators, and the best idea was to be selected.
Even though our idea and presentation got a lot of applause from the audience, our idea was
not among the best 3s which won the prizes. The event was concluded by a thanks-giving
speech by the delegates, college authorities, and also the Open Fuel Coordinators, followed by
photo sessions. Even though our idea wasnt selected, a few months later, the Global Taxi
service tycoon, UBER executed this mode of taxi-service in Bangalore. Thus, the event was a
fruitful one, making us aware that those who won the prizes may not be the ones who would
always win!
