Plan your idea to your two-minute film opening about a genre on your choice and come up with all
on the conventions to build your film.
Genre: Crime

1. Details:

The genre I have chosen to make a two-minute opening sequence and titles to is crime. I have
chosen this genre as it has given me the opportunity to use different techniques consisting of
different camera shots, voice overs and include a variety of different theories which will construct a
good film. After doing my research I have come to the conclusion that the conventions of a crime
film is mystery and corruption where Ronald Barthes theory takes placed by not giving all the
information away at once as it grabs the audiences attention and keeps them watching. Another
convention used is getting to know some of the main characters, this allows the audience to build a
relationship with them and distinguish the different roles they play for example the good and bad
characters. This links to Vladimir Props theory as the hero is typically the audiences favourite
character who is on a quest or mission that they in order to take on however, this character is
stereotypically a man in crime films and the villain is the one which the audience immediately
despise as they are disliked by the hero, which shows loyalty to the hero. I have also discovered
through my research how the films use their sound and camera shots as they use a long shot usually
at the beginning of an important scene to show the audience where they are and that they can
hopefully remember the location for reference later in the film. Close-up shots will be used when we
need the audience to focus on an important piece of small movement or expression. Sound is used
to make the scene flow more for instance when no or limited dialogue is being used then it can set
the tone of the scene.

My film will be a crime film which will air in early autumn in 2018 and will be called Offence as this
title gives an insight to the genre of crime as it links in with its connotations; this will allow the
audience to make this interpretation before they know what the film is about. The connotations of
offence which will inform the audience the genre and what the film consists of crime and
imprisonment. The production company of my film will be mix productions as they will provide a
large genre of films and this name will hopefully be easy to remember by the audience and they can
signify it with good quality films. The next production company of my film will be a new production
company called trapped films which will be specifically aimed at the genres of crime films which will
also have good associations with the production company will be with a good quality film.

2. Pitch:

Genres that I enjoy:

One genre that I enjoy is comedy films because they are designed to make the audience laugh
through amusement in a clever naturalistic way. When I watch comedy films the successfully amuse
me make me laugh when I am supposed to. The conventions of comedy films are having characters
that the audience like and can relate to. This makes it easier for the character to open up and make
the audience laugh. They will use their target audience to their advantage by researching what they
find funny and using it in their film.

Another genre of film that I enjoy is action films as they give a rush of excitement to their audience. I
like the aspect of mystery and crime that happens in the action films. In the films the lead character
has a series of challenges to complete but there is always the question whether they will complete it
or not as there is usually a villain in the way that the audience do not like.

Presenting ideas to focus groups:

The genre that I have based my film around is crime, I have chosen this genre as it has given me the
opportunity to use different techniques consisting of different camera shots, voice overs and include
a variety of different theories which can make a good film. Personally, I find this genre of film
interesting as an element of mystery is involved and it makes the audience want to know more and
usually has an aspect of drama as someone may get murdered.

My film is about a teenage girl who is seventeen years old and she leads a normal life as her dad is a
teacher and her mother passed away when she was younger however, they have a housekeep who
the family is close with. In the beginning of the film the girl is sleepwalking and then she notices
something happening in the kitchen. The girl is sitting on the stairs and unconsciously she is
watching a murder take place but the next day she just thought it was a dream. For the next week,
strange things kept happening like the housekeeper left she was having weird visions of what
happened that night. Towards the end of the film the girl will realise that the dreams that she keeps
happening did happen when she was asleep but all real. The way her brain gets triggered about this
when she saw an item of clothing that the murderer wore when the crime happened.

This narrative will work as it fits in with the genre well as it consists of a murder as someone got kills
and the convention of mystery is included as the characters neither the audience know who was
killed or who was the killer. This will appeal to my target audience as the characters are around
similar age to my primary target audience to they can relate and connect.

The crime openings that films that influenced the idea of my crime films are what doesnt kill you
as in this film a body is found when it floats to the top of the water which also happens in my
opening where a dead body is found at the beginning of the film. I got the element of mystery from
the film now you see me as the unknown factor is that they dont know how the trick was done as
they dont reveal the trick until the end.

The potential target audience of my film are my secondary target audience which are older people
as they might not like the violent aspect however, they may enjoy the mystery aspects as
stereotypically older people like programs like murder mysteries and murder she wrote.

Evidence of testing:

When presenting my idea of my film to my focus group I took the feedback on an anonymous
survey, I asked questions based on my plot, characters, and narrative. I created my survey on both
my target audience and other people who my film may not appeal to.

Target audience profile:

My primary target audience is the audience that I am aiming my film and believe that they will enjoy
it. I have primarily aimed my film at aspirer males ages 20-30, this is because when doing testing
evidence, I concluded that men were the people who enjoyed the plot and characters of my film. I

have gathered that my film may contain violence so stereotypically this will appeal to the male role
as the fight will be between male with may be relatable and entertaining for them to watch. My
secondary target audience is the people that I want to see my film but might not necessarily be
interested in watching it however; I will still segment them as the audience to my film. My secondary
audience is females ages between 30-40, this is because when doing my research, I found that
younger females werent interested in the film and found it hard to follow however, I found that
older women tend to like crime programs like murder mysteries and my film has a large aspect of
crime in it. My film is aimed a quite a broad market as it is not aimed at a specific ethnicity or class of
people as it does not contain direct humour or alienate anyone and it is a broad genre of film but,
people will watch it for mainly diversion (entertainment) purposes.

3. Plot

During the beginning of my film it will have the introduction with the logos of the productions
companies that helped me in creating my crime film which, I will show both during the opening.
During the equilibrium stage of my film the protagonist (leading) character will be introduced as
busy bank manager who works long hours. In the beginning the audience will find out that the wife
of this main character recently died, or was she murdered? We also meet his daughter who is in her
teens and whom has a close relationship with the bit player the housekeeper. In the equilibrium, it
will not have much action however; we will see the family grieving. Throughout the disruption stage
the husband raises a suspicion when he notices the housewife acting wary, comforting the character
and start to show some affection to the main character. The housemaid started to get angry every
time the wifes name was mentioned with raised some suspicion of jealousy in the daughters mind
and led her to believe that the housewife wanted to replace her mother which the daughter did not
accept. The daughter tried to get her father to turn against the housewife and tried to convince him
that she was replacing mother and it was her that murdered her. This creates tension between the
characters and causes a lot of arguments to spark. In the recognition stage the husband will find the
housewife planning to kill the daughter too and he caught her before it happened. This is the part
when the audience dont know if the daughter will survive and they find out why the housewife has
been killing people. The reason is it that she has loved this man for a very long time and she couldnt
stand being the lonely housewife that just helped around the house with no family of her own. At
the resolution stage, the daughter is mad and her father for not believing her however he begins to
make up for getting blindsided by the comforting house made and they decide to make it up and
become civil again. Finally, in the new equilibrium stage the family will go back to normal and they
will not be grieving as much and they will go on the holiday that they go on every year with his wife
without her.

4. Characters

Character one: The first character that will be introduced to the audience as the protagonist
character in my film is Jonathon Howl; he will help the audience to make a connection with him
before they meet the other characters. He will do this by giving a friendly approach and also be

considered the victim. Jonathon is a thirty-nine-year-old man who lives at home with his teenage
daughter in Coventry. This character is six-foot tall who is usually seen wearing a suit as he is
working most of the time. However, when this character isnt working he usually wears jeans and a t
shirt as he is a relaxed man when around his family. This character is viewed to be a middle class
man who, allows the audience to connect with him on their level and not to be too intimidating as
he has an approachable essence. The character was originally born in Canada but moved to England
at the young age of seven when his grandfather was ill and had to move back to support him.
Jonathon is a busy man who hates his job and only works on weekdays in London as a bank manager
at nine till five. This allows him to occasionally work away and must travel a few times a year as he
has been offered to go to japan in a months time. He and his wife had always desired to quit their
job and to travel the world and look at all the different beautiful landscapes that there are however,
they always pushed it back and never did it. He got married to his wife in 2003 at the age of 26 just a
few years after his daughter was born. The character has recently been diagnosed with depression
soon after his wife passed away which broke him apart. This character has one teenaged daughter
called Abigail who he has always had a close relationship with however, has grown closer to her
since he lost his wife to a terrible accident in may which ended her life last month.

Character two: The next characters that will audience will meet is a sixteen-year-old girl called Olivia
Howl. This character will have introduced to the audience at the begging of the film after the credits
when joined with the pervious character Jonathon. This will ensure that the audience also start to
build a close connection with these characters. The girl is just over five-foot-tall with long brown hair
who is usually seen is smart clothes as she is a student at college with her attire as smart blouses and
skirts. As her father is a bank manager she will be considered as a middle-class girl who has a low
paid job at her local caf however, she wants go get experience and to earn money for herself
before going off to university. Olivia is debating whether to go to university although it would be a
wonderful opportunity she doesnt want to leave her father alone so soon after her mother has died.
She is a popular girl at school that has many friends at school and takes her education very seriously
however; she has started to fall behind at school due to her troubles at home with her mother and is
starting to become a cause for concern. This character likes to go out with her friends often when
she is not studying goes to the cinema and watches a film or likes to go away a lot with her family.
But this character has recently been staying at home with her father in this upsetting time. Abigail as
one younger brother and is the oldest sibling, she lives at home with her father and brother. Her
mother passes away due to an accident which has broken her familys heart.

Character three: The final character that the audience are going to meet is a woman called Maria,
she will be s 26-year-old in November and will be presented as a bad character and will not be able
to spend as much time with the audience as the other characters as this character will be a villain in
the audiences eyes. As Maria works as a maid and a house cleaner for Mr Howl she is categorised in
the lower-class people and is usually seen wearing dirty clothes and a small apron. Maria is currently
a single woman who is starting to show interest into Mr Howl soon after his wifes disappearance
which has made the daughter somewhat suspicious and not to like the character. Due to the

audience liking the daughter and automatically makes they dislike her. This character may seem
innocent but sneaky however, by the end this view will be emphasised when the audience see what
she has done to Mr Howls wife. She has a lot of family but she had an argument with then a long
time ago which has make her to be a lonely character. Finally, this character is known for causing
mischief and breaking people apart for her own pleasure.

Planning costumes and props:

In the opening of my film it starts off with the male lead and his daughter in the car. The male
character will be wearing a shirt and tie with a jumper, this will show that the scene takes place on a
cold winters morning and the character is in a rush going to work as he is dressed smartly. The
character will already have his costume so no additional purchased needed to be made. The only
prop he will be using in the opening scene is a car as thats the choice of transport to get him to
school. The female daughter character will be wearing a blue turtle neck which will reflect the cold
weather but also the colour blue connotes sadness and worry which is the emotion that the
character is feeling in this specific scene. This character will not need any props in this specific scene.
The character that is committing the crime will be wearing a full black outfit as that is the typically
the outfit associated with a crime as when it is dark it will be hard to see the person if they are in a
black outfit. The prop that this person will be using is a sharp knife with blood on it which will be
shown as the murder weapon this character will also have a sponge to clean up the blood with to
hide the evidence.

Planning location:

At the beginning of my film it is set in a car as this will be where the characters are introduced when
the girl is on the way to school. I have chosen to have the first scene filmed in the car as it will be
easy and accessible place for me to film, this location is a natural environment which fits in with the
first stage of equilibrium where the film starts off slow and not much action. Within this scene the
flashback will take place of the girl remembering something about the night of the murder which
takes place in a different location. The location of the second scene is inside a house specifically shot
in the kitchen. I have chosen the kitchen as this would be an easy way to access the murder weapon
of a knife. When the culprit leaves the crime scene he is in the kitchen which is near the entrance so
she can easily escape. The final location is back in the car from the beginning scene when the
flashback ends.

Planning sound:

In the beginning of my film will be the car scene where the female lead in the film will be staring out
of the window whilst the male role begins to repeatedly call her name which is the only piece of
dialogue in this scene. In the next scene when the crime takes place, the scene it then muted so that
you cannot hear the moving around which shows how quiet they are being. During this scene I will
have non-diegetic spooky music playing it the background however, it will be at a low pitch and
volume to make sure that makes the audience feel uncomfortable like the person having the
