Onmanyconventionalshipsastembar,whichisasolidroundbar,isfittedfromthekeeltothewaterlineregion,and
aradiusedplateisfittedabovethewaterlinetoformtheupperpartofthestem.Thisformswhatisreferredtoasa
'softnose'stem,whichintheeventofacollisionwillbuckleunderload,keepingtheimpactdamagetoaminimum.
Oldershipshadsolidbarstemswhichwererivetedandofsquaresection,andasthestemhadnorakeitcould
causeconsiderabledamageonimpactbecauseofitsrigidity.Smallshipssuchastugsandtrawlersmaystillhavea
solidstembarextendingtothetopofthebow,andsomeexistinglargepassengershipsmayhavesteelcastingsor
forgingsformingthelowerpartofthestem.AspeciallydesignedbowisrequiredforshipsassignedIceClassAC
notationsandadditionalscantlingsarerequiredforthestemsofshipsassignedothericeclasses(seeChapter17).
