The Problem

Introduction

In todays society, especially on this generation, social media has become a part

of our everyday lives. We have access to all types of information in the palm of our

hands through our cellphones, iPads and other handheld devices. They can provide us

with a weather forecast in ten seconds or less, e-mails, banking, and most importantly,

social media. Social media or social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.,

has taken the technology world to a whole new level.

The rapid development of social networking that has been observed over the last

years is pinpointing of its entry into mainstream culture and its integration into the daily

lives of many people. Corresponding with this, there has also been substantial media

coverage of the growth of social networking, its potential positive outcomes and

concerns about the way that some people are engaging with it.

Social networking sites offer people new and varied ways to communicate via

internet, whether through their PC or their mobile phone. They allow people to easily

and simply create their own online page or profile and to construct and display an online

network of contacts, often called friends. Users of these sites can communicate via

their profile both with their friends and with people outside their list of contacts. This
can be on a one-to one basis (much like an email), or in a more public way such as a

comment posted for all to see. Now, even to high school students, communication is

instant. They own cell phones that enable them to access social networking sites

throughout the day.

Although we see how it can serve as a positive thing by being a good source of

communication, it can also serve as a negative thing such as cyber bullying and cat

fishing. This continuous change in cultural and social aspect and with the accordance of

technological revolution, the social networkings essence in the face of the Internet and

Web is still in question. One of it is, what happens when social networking participation

of students comes in to play with their academic performance?

For the purpose of this study, I have purposely focused on the influence of social

networking participation on the academic performance among students of Tupsan

National High School.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social Networking is one of the latest phenomenon that makes the whole wide

world cling to it. It has brought about changes in terms of communication. It also creates

positive and negative impact in the lifestyle of billions of people most particularly to the

younger generation. Social networking site helps develop both intrapersonal and
interpersonal aspect of an individual. It unlocks the curiosity of an individual on what is

life and what is it all about.

It may aid people in their academic life just like how it supports a firm and a

country in its economic, political, societal and spiritual aspects. On the other hand, it still

inculcates negative effects that have been wide-spreading throughout the world.

Considering the awaiting destruction in the diverse facets of life of an individual, in his

community and even his country.

This study will be conducted in Tupsan National High School where the

researcher will select students from different year level and sections to pre-determine

the influence of social networking participation on their academic performance.

Theoretical Framework

This study further concerned on cognitive ability of the students and their

performance in the actual classroom interaction.

Social learning theory proposed by Albert Bandura has become perhaps the

most influential theory of learning and development. In Albert Banduras Social

Learning Theory added an element arguing that people can learn new information and

behaviors by watching other people. Known as observational learning (or modeling),

this type of learning can be used to explain a wide variety of behaviors.

It is because people are very perceptual, we love doing the most popular thing or

being in. Through observation, we see and feel that having a social networking site

account could probably makes us feel fit in and those who do the same thing accept us.

Lets say computers and social networking sites together fits the definition of a symbolic

model, which involves real or fictional characters displaying behaviors in books, films,

television programs, or online media. Most people's hobbies are intrinsically motivated.

Social evaluation theory suggests that we form our own attitudes and behaviors

by comparing ourselves with other people and their opinions. Mostly we compare

ourselves against people whom we believe we're reasonably similar to.

For example, a popular social networking site nowadays- Facebook capitalizes on

people's drive for social comparison by offering an excess of applications like the visual

bookshelf that lets you see what books your peers are reading and the 'Compare me'

application that allows you to find out where you stand relative to your friends for

various categories like cutest, sexiest and smartest. This is very similar to the surveys

often found in women's magazines - 'How emotionally intelligent are you? Take our quiz

to find out!' It's compelling to benchmark ourselves against others to see where we fit in.

Social learning is the key to creating higher-order thinking and with continual

enhancement of technology learning is inevitable.

Figure 1 presents the paradigm of the study which will use Academic Performance

among students of Tupsan National High School as the dependent variable and the
Social Networking Participation of the same students will be the dependent variable and

its perception across gender line as the moderator.

Statement of the Problem

The study will look into the influence of Social Networking Participation on the

Academic Performance among Students of Tupsan National High School.

It will seek to answer the following specific questions:

1. What is the academic performance of students in Tupsan national High School

2. Is there a correlation between academic performance and the time students

spend or participate social networking sites

3. Is there a significant difference between the academic performance and the time

students spend or participate in social networking sites along the moderator

variable.

Hypotheses

The researcher will be guided by the following hypotheses:

1. There is no correlation between academic performance and the time students

spend or participate social networking sites

2. There is no significant difference between the academic performance and the

time students spend or participate in social networking sites along the moderator

variable.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be beneficial to the following:

To the School Administrator: The result of this study will become the springboard of

the school management to launch an ICT program to address problems on the

participation of social networking sites among students. It could also be a start to launch

a school policy to sustain the good practice and promote positive outcome on the

participation of social networking sites

To the Faculty of Teachers: This study will give information to the teachers on the

advantages and disadvantages of networking sites. How this new technology affects our

youth nowadays.

To the Students: This study will give information to the students on how they can able

to use social networking site in proper manner and to be aware on the how social

networking site could affect their study.

To the Community: This study will make the community be aware on the effects of

social networking sites to its constituents. To give information how a community could

limit the use of networking sites and create ways to make it useful to the whole

community.
To the Future Researchers: The researchers will have a comparative analysis and

basis for future study regarding the effects of social networking sites to the academic

performance of the students.

To the Parents: Parents will know about social networking site and how this new

technology can affect their children. And for them to be able to guide and mentor their

children in the academic and social facets.

To the User: This study will help the user of social networking site to limit their time in

social networking and to improve their academic performance.

Delimitation of the Study

In this study, the academic performance will be limited to the ratings of students

in the three major subjects: English, Math and Science. Primarily the present study will

focus only on the correlation of academic performance and participation of social

networking sites and across gender line among students of Tupsan National High

School from Grade 7 to Grade 10.

Definition of Terms

The following terms will be used and define theoretically and operationally within the

context of this study.

Academic Performance. This refers to the students quarterly grade (Apondi, 2012)

Cat fishing. This refers to the phenomenon of internet predators that fabricate

online identities and entire social circles to trick people into

emotional/romantic relationships over a long period of time

Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a

person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening

nature.

Facebook. This refers to an SNS that was originally designed for the use of

age students, and operated under restriction to keep it so. Rosen (2007)

explains that the name originates from the small photo albums that s

once gave to incoming freshmen and faculty to help them cope with

meeting so many new people.

Instagram. This refers to an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing, and

social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and

videos, and share them either publicly or privately on the app.

Social Networking Sites.

(SNS) Social Networking Sites. This refer to web-based services that allow

individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded

system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection,

and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others

within the system.

Skype. This refers to an application that provides video chat and voice call

services. Users may exchange such digital documents as images, text,

video and any others, and may transmit both text and video messages.

Skype allows the creation of video conference calls.

Twitter. Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post

and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Registered users

can post and read tweets.
