CVL 500: Introduction to Structural Engineering

Assignment No. 2
Due Date: Week of October 3 (During Tutorial Hours Only)

1) For the cantilever roof beam ABE in Assignment 1 (shown also below) design a suitable
glulam beam providing that;

a) Specified uniform dead load including beam self-weight = 13 kN/m

b) Specified uniform snow load = 25 kN/m
c) The beam is laterally supported throughout at top by the roof deck
d) Use D Fir-L 20f Ex grade
2- Design single span oblique roof purlins for the following conditions;

- Purlin spacing= 1.7 m

- Purlin span= 8 m
- Roof pitch= 3/12 = 14.04
- Specified dead load including purling self-weight= 0.8 kPa
- Specified snow load= 2.5 kPa
- Standard duration
- Dry service conditions
- Untreated
- Use D. Fir-L Select Structural sawn member

3- A 12c-E Spruce-Pine-Fir (S-P-F) column is loaded as follows;

- Specified axial load= 8 kN dead load + 35 kN live load

- The column is 8 m high and restrained at every 2 m

a) Check the adequacy of a glulam column (130 x 190 mm) for compressive axial load

b) Check the adequacy of a S-P-F select structural sawn timber column (140 x 191 mm)
for compressive axial load
