CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background
This chapter consists our introduction of our topic, significance of the study,
statement of the problem, conceptual framework, theoretical framework,
hypothesis, scope and delimitations of the study and the operational definition of
terms.

INTRODUCTION
Social Media is a widely-used electronic communication which is used by
people such as, teenagers, adults, and even children to communicate and interact
through Internet using online sites and applications. Personality is a set of emotional
qualities that makes a person unique and it is also the attractive qualities that make
an individual interesting. And the researchers tackled on how social media affects
the development of a teenager's personality.
The researchers came up with the study entitled The Effect of Social Media
on the Development of a Teenager's Personality considering that this study can
easily attract most of the teenagers for them to be aware of how can social media
affect their individual personalities. This study provides the readers on what, why
and how does the social media serves as a factor or a cause on how the teenagers
develop their personalities. Through this study, the readers would be able to know
what are the purpose of engaging in social media and how does social media affects
their relationships to their family, friends and even in the society that they belong to.
Also, how teenagers manage their time in using social media and what
communication skills do they adapt from interacting through social media.

Basic Education Department-Senior High School 5

This study can benefit teenagers. parents, society, the researchers, and the
future researchers wherein they would be able to determine the possible causes that
affects them based on their individual personalities. Teenagers will be enlightened of
what the study contains considering that they are the main respondents of it. Parents
will be aware of what are the things that affect their children. Society will be able to
grasp the situation where social media affects the teenagers that might cause them
to act and behave differently in the society. The researchers will be able to fully
understand the essence of researching topics that they will be able to relate
themselves. The future researchers will be able to make our study their reference in
making their research and will be able to help them easily relate their research.
Thereupon, this study contains the constituents that influence the changes of
the teenager's personality that will boost the readers' knowledge about social media.

Importance of the Study

To the teenagers are the people involved in making our study. They will be
able to benefit from our study because it will enlighten their knowledge on
how social media affects the development of their personality. They will be
aware on the positive and negative effects of social media in one's own
personality.

To the parents who are the ones who's responsible to the development of
their children because some of the contents that can be seen in social media
is not appropriate for their age. They will also benefit from our study because
they will be able to determine how social media can greatly affect their
children.

To the society that can also benefit in our study because they will be able to
know why and how does a teenager develop their behavior and how social
media can greatly affect a teenagers development.

To the researchers who are the ones who got interested in studying this kind
of topic. We researchers also a teenagers can benefit from our own study
because as we work on it we also explore on how can social media greatly
affect in our development particularly in terms of our personality.

To the future researchers who are the ones who might be interested or
researching the same topic that relates in our study. The can also benefit from
our study in a way that our study will be able to serve as a reference to them
for also supporting their chosen topic.

Theoretical Framework

Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, as articulated by Erik Erikson,

in collaboration with Joan Erikson, is a comprehensive psychoanalytic theory that
identifies a series of eight stages, in which a healthy developing individual should
pass through from infancy to late adulthood. All stages are present at birth but only
begin to unfold according to both a natural scheme and one's ecological and cultural
upbringing. In each stage, the person confronts, and hopefully masters, new
challenges. Each stage builds upon the successful completion of earlier stages. The
challenges of stages not successfully completed may be expected to reappear as
problems in the future.

Erik Erikson's Theory: The Eight Stages of Development (2002) is related to

our topic for it shows a series of stages that we encounter in our adolescence stage.
And in this stages of development, we can analyze the positive and negative
outcomes of what social media does to our personality. And also, we will see the
different influences that teenagers might get through social media, if the changes will
cause good or bad traits to a teenager. This theory is related to our study as we
focus on the development of a teenagers personality. It greatly affects in our study
as the theory explains the stages in ones personality. This theory correlates to our
study for its shows the struggle of teenagers in finding their identity and sorting their
roles simultaneously. The theory supports our topic because it is more on the mental
and personal development of the teenagers in which the social media is the primary
cause.

FEEDBACK

Figure 1. The Effect of Social Media on the Development of a Teenagers

Personality
The use of social media is one of the few factors that affect the development
of a teenager's personality. The researchers planned to conduct a pre-survey to
provide an evidence to be our reference in continuing our study. Then there will be
surveys and interviews for the researchers to have concrete evidence that will
support our study. As a result we will be able to determine the effect of social media
on the development of a teenagers personality.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to:

1.1. Gender
1.2. Age
1.3. Social Media Engagements
1.4. Number of hour in social media engagements
2. What are the purposes of teenager social media engagements?
3. How do the following regulate the social media engagements of the teenagers?
3.1. Parents
3.2. School
4. How did the social media affect the teenagers personality in terms of:
4.1. Time management
4.2. Socialization
4.3. Family relationship
4.4. Communication skills

Hypothesis
Alternative: There is a significant relationship between the effects of social
media to the development of a teenagers personality for it actually gives us time to
connect with each other who is not near us such as family with OFW members and
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 10

we can socialize better with other people and we are also affected by social media in
terms of communication by being able to enhance our communication skills.

Scope and Delimitation

The factors that will affect our study are the research locale, the quantity of
our respondents, the specified respondents, and the timeframe of the study. These
factors may also serve as a reference to the researchers in completing their study.
The research locale will be at Santa Isabel College, specifically the Senior High
School Department. This is where most of the teenagers have already matured and
spent most of their time in using social media. The target quantity of our respondents
is the maximum number of students in Senior High School students at Santa Isabel
College. Our respondents specifically the teenagers has a great contribution in our
study because they are the ones who'll provide evidences in our study. The
timeframe will also affect in complying in our study because there is a specific period
of time when it should be passed and by getting late on the deadline might give us a
pressure on working our study.

CHAPTER 2
Review of Related Literature

This chapter includes the related literature and studies that are inclined to the
researchers study which is The Effect of Social Media on the Development of a
Teenagers Personality.

Related Literature
I. Local Literature
According to Maria Gina Garcia-Cox, Personal Development (2016)
Social Media One important aspect of social media with regards to
adolescents is its emphasis on building and maintaining relationhips.
The profile information teenagers make, all the followers developed,
and the cycle how each oneis meant to nurture more relationships with
other people is the heart of social media. Social media is transforming
the basics of how we relate to others. If you are connecting with your
family, friends, classmates and relatives through social media, you may
want to know the many changes it affects our interpersonal ways.
Social media is changing our relationship patterns, first, its allowing us
to connect with more peoplevery rapidly. Second, its easy to misjudge
the level of closeness of our online relationships. Third, it makes us
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 13

more vulnerable to a social media infection effect. This means you may
begin adopting behaviors, attitudes, and benefits from those within our
social network. Fourth, social media facilitates comparing ourselves
with others, which may create both positive or negative effects.

II. Foreign Literature

According to Raychelle Cassada Lohmann MS, LPC(Jan. 24,

2016)The first on the rank is Facebook. There have been reports
that Facebooks popularity with teens is beginning to fade, surveys show that
its still the most popular site. Approximately 71% of American teens ages 13-
17 report using Facebook. The Pros for now is that Facebook is one of the
most popular and user-friendly social networking sites. Creating a profile is
super easy. The site helps members identify people they may know based on
their age, geographical location, school, etc. For teens, Facebook provides a
place to virtually hangout and connect with friends. There are also places to
connect with people who share common interests. One of the great things
about Facebook is the networks ability to close the geographical distance
between friends and family. From a teens perspective, one of the cons is that
too many parents and adults are on Facebook. So the novelty of having your
own virtual space is disappearing. Plus, many teens dont like having parents,
grandparents and other adults in their business. Bottom line - teens like
privacy and when others invade their space, they leave. With adults using
Facebook as their own social networking tool, many teens are venturing off to
find another more secluded space.Another con of Facebook is what is posted
will be seen by others. Even if privacy settings are secure, there is no
guarantee accounts wont be hacked, or information wont be shared by
others who have access to view the information. When something is
uploaded onto Facebook - its public. There are numerous stories of peoples
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 14

photos being downloaded and misused. When youth post pictures of

themselves making poor decisions, or rant in the comment section, it can
come back to haunt them in the future. Plus more and more college
representatives and potential employers scour the internet for information.
Teens have to be vigilant about exercising good judgment about what they
share not only on Facebook, but on other sites as well.

Instagram ranked at two with over 400 million users Instagram has
exploded into a massive social media network. Not only are adults taking to
the site, but so are teens. Instagram is a social networking app designed to
share photos and videos. Like Facebook and Twitter, people create an
account which displays a profile and has a news feed. When a photo or video
is posted, it will be displayed on the users profile. Other members who follow
the user will be able to view the post and the user will be able to see the posts
from members who follow them. Instagram's popularity is skyrocketing with
approximately 52% of American teens ages 13-17 reporting using the
site. The Prosis that Instagram is fun, easy to browse and visually attractive. It
also has good privacy settings. This helps ensure people who dont follow
users cant access their photos without permission. People like and make
comments on the photos and that can boost a user'sconfidence. Plus,
Instagram is versatile and allows users to share photos and videos on other
social networking sites. While The Cons of it is that users should make sure
that the settings are private. The privacy settings are very important on the
app. If privacy settings are not secure, photos and videos will appear in
Instagrams public feed.

Snapchat ranked at third spot. Snapchat is a photo and video sharing

site that allows users to send photo messages that are only intended to be
seen by the recipient for a few seconds. Snapchat's disappearing messages
makes the site a hit with teens. According to Pew Research Center 11% of
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 15

teens use Snapchat. The Pros of using is Snapchat is snapshot of life via text
messaging, photos or videos. Lots of teens use it to take selfies, show how
they feel, or share other information they deem private and important. On
Snapchat, when a teen shares a photo or video, they are sharing a moment
with chosen friends, and that makes it a more personal experience. And the
Cons of it is that teens may think the pictures they post on Snapchat will
evaporate into thin air, but that could be farther from the truth. Recipients can
easily take a screenshot of the image before is disappears. For parents, its
also important to know that Snapchat has been used by some teens as a tool
to sext. Unfortunately some teens trust the apps disappearing feature and
make poor decisions about what they are posting. However, those lapse of
judgment pictures or videos can resurface in the future.

Twitter ranked at fourth spot. Twitter is a social network that is short

and to the point. Users are only allowed to tweet up to 140 characters. People
follow one another on Twitter based on interest and social connections.
Twitter comes in at number 4 (6% of teens report using) on teens most used
sites. The Pros of it is that it operates in real time, Twitter users tweet out
short bursts of information. People also tweet about their opinions on various
topics. Its easy to link others to websites, photos, or blogs along with a short
comment. Twitter users narrow down comments by using a hashtag (#)
attached to a keyword (#teens). The # allows users to search Twitter for
comments on specific topics. Plus, its a great way to quickly spread the word
about events. While the cons of it is thatThere are a lot of people tweeting
and it can become overwhelming. Teens can follow friends, bands,
actors/actresses, and anyone else that tweets. Followers and users can send
private messages to one another, so it can be used as a platform for direct
conversations. Twitter is a fast way to get information out. Its also a fast way
to for teens to say something they shouldnt. It only takes a few seconds to
tweet something that can come back to bite the sender.
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 16

Rank at its fifth spot is Google+. Google+ is a social networking

platform, plusso much more for teens to use. Approximately 5% of teens use
Google+ and that number is expected to increase. The pros of using
Google+ is a social networking platform that brings all of Googles services
together for users to enjoy. Google+ features the ability to post photos and
status updates to communities. Communities allow users to engage in
ongoing conversations about particular topics of interest. The program also
allows users to group their relationships with others in circles. One really neat
feature of Google+ is hangouts. Hangouts is a free video chat service that can
call up to 10 people through the Google+ or a mobile app.Google+ does offer
a Teen Safety Guide to help teens navigate safely on the sites. The company
even offers a Google+ for teens, which provides more guidance and
conservative defaults. Google+ is a multi-layered social networking system
that makes it a one stop shop when it comes to social media and
networking. The cons of using Google+ is that, with all social networking,
privacy settings need to be secure. When a teen shares information with
his/her circle it can be re-shared to someone elses circle. An exception is that
Google does allow options to limit re-sharing which is a +. However, like
many other sites, people can take screen shots of the content.

From Future of Working (June 2, 2015) stated the advantages and

disadvantages of using social media. The Pros of Social Networking is that
we can Stay Connected. The main purpose of social media is to be able to
stay connected to friends and families in todays fast paced and ever
changing worlds. You are able to rekindle old friendships, share family photos,
and special events in your life with just about everyone you know, at the same
time. We can Find People With Common Interests.Social networking is also a
great way to meet entirely new people. You can seek out groups that are
focused towards your special interests and hobbies and connect with local
people that share the same interests. Online and social media dating is
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 17

almost more common than traditional dating is in todays world. It can

beInvaluable Promotional Tool as companies, artists, and musicians can
reach an impossibly large and diverse amount of people using social media
sites. This allows them to promote and market themselves and their products
in a way that has never been seen before. AlsoInformation Spreads Incredibly
Fast, breaking news and other important information can spread like wildfire
on social media sites. Important things like recalls, storm information, or
missing children are all communicated and taken seriously very quickly. It
Helps To Catch And Convict CriminalsPeople often do not think of the
consequences of what they post of these social sites. Pictures of themselves
doing illegal things, or even bragging posts about crimes they have committed
are all things that law enforcement use to persecute these criminals. They
also use these sites to identify and solve existing cases. While The Cons of
Social Networking, it Perpetuates False And Unreliable Information. Just like
stated above, anything can spread to millions of people within hours or days
on social media. This also, unfortunately, includes things that are false or
made up. This information can cause panic and severe misinformation in
society. It Cause Major Relationship ProblemsOnline.Social interactions with
social networking have not only been starting new relationships, but ending
many others. It is very simple to communicate and share pictures or plans
with a person on social media and keep it completely under wraps. This new
temptation has been driving wedges into peoples real life, offline
relationships, often time ending them for good. Social networking puts trust to
the limit. Also, Cyber Bullying Is A Growing Problem. Having access to
peoples lives at all times is not always a good thing. A new trend of cyber
bullying is wreaking havoc all across the world. This is especially true with
young kids. They are publicly harassing one another, and posting mean or
slanderous things which are broadcasted to the entire cyber world. Some
Used To Profile and Discriminate In The Job World. Just about everyone has
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 18

a social media account the shows what they look like, the type of life that they
live, and how old they are. Employers are using this to their advantages is
some very unsettling ways. Jobs that are looking for a certain criteria of
person, but cannot legally express these criteria, are using social media to
prescreen their applicants. And you can totally be addicted in using it. One of
the biggest problems with the social media craze is that people are becoming
more and more addicted to using it. It is the number one time waster at work,
in school, and at home. All of this has caused people to have literal withdraws
from their social networks.

According to Parent Further, Intellectual Development is that abstract

thinking becomes more common with older teenagers. Theyll gravitate more
to the gray areas between the black-and-white issues of their early years.
Theyll also change their mind about the grays to suit their goals and
wishes.Older teenagers, such as those in this age range, expand their logic
and reasoning abilities, although many still struggle to match their thinking
abilities with their actions. Thus, a lot of kids will talk intelligently but then have
trouble with planning.Their thinking now considers the future. They can think
and have thoughtful discussions about war, college, the economy, and their
visions of what would make the world better.Because older teenagers are
more intellectually advanced than a child or younger teens, adults can have
more back-and-forth conversations with them. Theyre better able to
understand other peoples points of views, and theyre more open to other
perspectives and ideas. Many older teenagers will use their new intellectual
capacities as logical weapons against their parents. This has more to do
with them separating from you. Theyll punch holes in your logic, and theyll
challenge you with thought-out reason.

Emotional Development can help your teen learn how to recognize and
deal with stress, anger, and sadness; to exercise regularly and eat healthy
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 19

food; and to express feelings honestly as well as respect others feelings in

friendships and romantic relationships. Your teen will continue to benefit from
continuing to do his part around home and at school, and in taking care of his
own well-being.Emotionally, teenagers dont typically like physical affection
from their parents. Many do, however, like a lot of physical affection from their
friends.Expect a lot of tension and conflict with your teenager, because your
teenager is separating from you. The path to independence is rocky for both
parents and older teenagers. Some older teenagers will go anywhereexcept
where their parents are. Be patient with this. Typically kids will draw closer to
parents once they leave home. Once theyve experienced true
independence, they discover that their parents arent as idiotic as they
thought when they were older teenagers.Monitor your teenagers emotional
states. Most have an emotional state that theyre most comfortable with.
Some are easygoing. Some get angry easily. Others get depressed. Intervene
if emotions are overwhelming your older teenager. Some teenagers will give
you the silent treatment when they become angryor if they dont get their
way. Give them time to simmer down. Theyll talk to you again (usually when
they need something from you). Some kids begin dabbling in more serious risk
behaviors (such as self-harm, drinking alcohol, trying drugs, and having sex).
Help kids steer clear of these behaviors. Talk with them about what theyre
experiencingand what theyre seeing going on with their peers. Some are
struggling with difficult issues.

Physical Development shows that older teenagers typically look

physically older than they are. Fifteen-year-olds can be mistaken for 21-year-
olds, which is why some teenagers find themselves in troubling
situations.Since all kids go through five stages of puberty, youll continue to
see older teenagers mature. Even during the high school years, youll notice
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 20

teenagers maturing at different rates. This is normal, even if teenagers dont

feel like it is.Most teenagers have trouble waking up in the morning. Part of
this is because they stay up later. But part of it is biological. Older teenagers
tend to shortchange sleep, which can hinder their development. Dont be
afraid to let them sleep until noonor even until the middle of the afternoon
on weekends.

Social Developmentat this age, friendships and romance become more

important while cliques become less so.Older teenagers are less influenced
by peer pressure. Theyre more likely to seek out experts when they want to
know or do something.Teenagers are heavily influenced by their friends when
it comes to clothing, styles, music, and fads.Your child is more likely to seek
out advice and help from a friend than from you.A lot of teenagers pair off into
couples. Dating becomes more pervasive, and some teens develop intense
romantic relationships

According to Mara Krisna Orellana(March 20, 2013) A Social

networking site can be a good way to make connections with people with
similar interest and goals (Steve, 2008). Communication is one of the main
things why social networking sites to gather information to broaden their
knowledge. Since social networking sites is a huge place to gather

Other things in the social media is a great chance to gather ideas since those

According to Babe Romualdez (May 10, 2015) Theres no denying the

important role that traditional media plays in shaping perceptions and driving
opinion to the point of influencing and affecting policy in government, but the
advent of technology has given rise to the social media phenomenon which
has become a powerful medium not only for news and information
dissemination, but as an effective tool in driving intelligent discussion on hot
issues like the Bangsamoro Basic Law for instance.
As socialnomics experts would put it, word of mouth has been
transformed into world of mouth wherein individuals get up-to-date
information about the things that are happening not only locally but globally,
with exchange of views happening not on a one-on-one basis but on a many-
to-many global platform with just a click on the mouse or the swipe of a finger
on a smart gadgets screen.
People familiar with change.org know that this site has effectively
utilized social media platforms like Facebook to drive change and elevate
issues that impact the lives of people. From environment to education to
business to politics and governance, change.org has empowered people to
raise their voices and bring attention to issues close to their hearts and minds
even their stomachs. In effect, the site has given ordinary individuals the
means to start revolutions and change lives for the better.
In the Philippines, studies show that over 80% of Filipinos are actively
engaged in social media and are among the worlds top uploaders of photos
and videos earning for us the reputation as the social networking capital of
the world. Most of the Filipino Netizens now use their Facebook not just to
post selfies but to exchange views and opinions with fellow Netizens on hot
button issues via FB groups. According to Nimfa B. Ogena (July 17, 2016)
Part of the adult self-projection phase is the exploration and discovery of their
capacities and limitations. How these new individuals with a capacity to think,
decide and act freely handle life challenges eventually help shape societys

views about them. There is diversification in the social roles adolescents have

to play and concurrent societal expectations likewise shift towards greater
liberalization. Being adolescents give them greater freedom but less burden
(i.e., compared to adults) to explore these new situations. Relational
dynamics with family also change. With less and less exposure to their
families attendant to the diversification activities and circle of associates, the
adolescents relations with their own families may contract while relations with
others may widen both in scope and depth.

II. Foreign Studies

According to a study by the International Journal of Internet Marketing

and Advertising (July 2014) Personality is a leading factor in
understanding the way people behave on the internet (Amichai-
Hamburger, 2002). Some people check their e-mails or make
transactions, and some others gather information and book holidays.
Some of these activities may produce positive effects for one type of
personality or negative for others (Amichai-Hamburger, 2002). In order
to understand the expansion of the internet, it is vital to understand the
personalities of those who surf the net (Amichai-Hamburger and
Vinitzky, 2010). In that way, advertisers will be able to address users
with a more personalised and appropriate message that suits their
personality (Amichai-Hamburger, 2002). In offline everyday
interactions, people try to convey who they are through their bodies,
movements, speech, clothes and facial expressions, sometimes
failing to communicate what they intended (Boyd, 2008; Correa et
al., 2010; Hudges et al., 2012). Online, they get across their
personalities through the information they share (Amichai-Hamburger
et al., 2004). According to Our Everyday Life (2016) Personality, teen's
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 23

personality shapes the way he thinks and how he handles emotions,

according to Dennis O'Neil, professor of anthropology at Palomar
College, and personality also influences your child's temperament.
What your teenager learns to expect from life, his values and beliefs
and how he reacts to successes and disappointments all define his
personality. Spending time with your teen helps you exert more
influence on your child's development. Its Social Influences according
to Anthropologists, including Margaret Mead, debate the influence of
society and culture on personality development, but most ethnographic
scholars agree that society influences the way parents raise children.
Child-rearing practices shape personality development. Parents also
encourage teens to use self-monitoring personality behaviors to control
actions. Teens learn how to use the conscious self as a part of
personality in some homes. Most parents use a combination of these
three influences in raising teenagers. Teenagers Confidence build self-
esteem and develop confidence by watching parents deal with life
challenges. A long-term study reported in 1984 to the American
Psychological Association and confirmed in 2012 by a review of more
than 500 studies, found that teen self-esteem improves when the
parent of the same gender has high confidence levels, but other
studies reported by the APA show that the father's level of esteem as
the most important factor for teens of both sexes in developing self-
confidence. According to Paulo A. S. Moreira, C. RoberCloninger,
LilianaDinis. (Jan. 7, 2015) Adolescence is a developmental period
characterized by marked transformations in psychobiological
processes underlying behaviors, due to the maturation of the
neuroanatomical circuitries, the specificities of the contexts and the
development tasks associated (autonomy, intimacy, etc.). Adolescents'
psychobiological organizations are modulated by interactions among
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 24

individual and context dimensions resulting in different pattern of

functioning, from positive to negative functioning. Although personality
development is characterized by continuity, temperament and
character dimensions have different development patterns (Josefsson
et al., 2013a), with character dimensions exerting a significant
influence on individuals functioning, including on wellbeing (Cloninger
and Zohar, 2011; Josefsson et al., 2011). In spite of its importance to
the promotion of adolescents positive functioning, the influences of
different combinations of character dimensions on adolescents'
wellbeing remain unexplored. Childhood personality is a significant
predictor of competence and resilience in adulthood (Shiner and
Masten, 2012), and dimensions of positive mental health systematized
by Vaillant (2012) are involved in cascades of children and adolescents
positive and negative development (Blandon et al., 2010; Bornstein et
al., 2010). Because well-being is a central dimension on positive
development cascades (Lewin-Bizan et al., 2010), a developmental
approach to mental health requires the understanding of the
developmental associations between the psychobiological processes
underlying personality and well-being also in earlier stages of
development, including early and middle adolescence. In addition, a
fully understanding of adolescents health requires the use of genetic-,
neuroanatomic, and psychological-informed frameworks (Burnett et
al., 2011; Sturman and Moghaddam,2011; Eldreth et al., 2013;
Richards et al., 2013).

CHAPTER 3
Research Methodology
This chapter contains the research design, instrumentation and sources of
data where you can find and identify who is our respondents, research locale and
how we are able to gather data for our chosen topic.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The researchers used the descriptive correlation method. The researcher
aimed to know the effect of social media to the senior high school students'
personality at Santa Isabel College in Taft, Manila. Descriptive correlation method
includes giving of survey questionnaires. This was used to identify and determine
the effects of social media to the students and how they cope up with their
necessities and responsibilities while engaging in social media. The correlation
method was used to determine the relation betweeen the social media and the
students since the study is concerned with the students' personality and the social
media as the cause of development.
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 26

SOURCES OF DATA
The researchers conduct the study at Santa Isabel College specifically at the
Basic Education Department for they can locate the respondents and they are the
Senior Highschool Students. The researchers will analyze and review how social
media may affect the teenager's personality and how they use social media in their
daily activities/life.
The researchers conduct the study to mostly all of the Senior Highschool
Students of Santa Isabel College. We, the researchers, have chosen the senior
highschool students for we can access them easily due to time similarities and easy
connection. And also, all of the senior highschool students, including the
researchers, use social media most of the time.

INSTRUMENTATION
The data and information for this study were gathered through formal
interview and personal observation on the locale of the research. The informal
interview is the dominant research instrument that the researchers use to gather
relevant data about their study. The informal interview was conducted on the locale
which consists of questions on what kind of social media the respondents often use.

CHAPTER 4
Presentation, Interpretation and Analysis of Data
This chapter consists of the presentation, interpretation and the analysis of data of
our research. This contains the proof of interviewing our respondents and how the
researchers came up with a conclusion that supports our statement of the problems
concerning social media engagements.

Demographic Profile of the Respondents

Gender
Frequency Percentage
Male 29 23%
Female 76 72%
Total 105 100%

The number of males is 29 and the number of females is 76. There are more
female respondents than those of the male's. So, in our research there are more
female respondents because the school that we have use as the research locale has
more female than males.
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 28

Age
Frequency Percentage
13 20 19%
14 18 17%
15 17 16%
16 25 24%
17 15 14%
18 4 4%
19 6 6%
Total 105 100%

The researchers' age limit is from 13-19. There are 20 thirteen year old, 18
fourteen year old, 17 fifteen year old, 25 sixteen year old, 15 seventeen year old, 4
eighteen year old and 6 nineteen year old teenagers. So, there are more older
teenagers that researchers have interviewed because the researchers focused more
on the higher levels of high school.

Social Media Engagement

Frequency Percentage
Facebook 105 100%
Total 105 100%

All of the researchers' respondents stated that they mostly use Facebook as
their social media. So, Facebook is really a need for teenagers and students.

Number Of Hours In Social Media Engagement

Frequency Percentage

Basic Education Department-Senior High School 29

3 hours and below 35 33%

4-5 hours 40 38%
6 and above 30 29%
Total 105 100%

There are 35 respondents who use social media for 3 hours and below, 40 for
4-5 hours of use and 30 for 6 hours and above. There are many respondents who
use social media for a short time. So, most of our respondents use social media for
a short time than using it almost throughout the day.

The Purpose of Social Media Engagements

Most of the teenagers that the researchers have interviewed stated that they
engage in social media mostly for their entertainment, for killing time and to
communicate with their friends and loved ones. Entertainment, for them to watch
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 30

and do something while they are surfing the internet. Killing time because they
stated that it's really boring when they are not doing anything so, they tend to
engage in social media. And communication because they would like to be aware
and updated with their friends and what's happening with their lives. While some
stated that they use it for academic works like projects, reports, assignments,
research etc.. So, that they will be aware of what's happening around them and for
the more informed about the happenings in their country and even the world.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media is mostly for their entertainment and some teenagers use it for their
academically-inclined works. They use it because they want to talk to their friends
and tell stories to them. They use it to kill time because they can't bear being bored
in their house so they engage in social media instead. While some of the teenagers
are making good use of engaging in social media because they use it for gathering
knowledge and more information that might help them.

The Following People who Regulate the Social Media Engagements of

Teenagers

Parents:
Parents are those people in everyone's life that help prosper them and make
them into good adults. As for our topic, parents regulate the teenagers in engaging in
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 31

social media by way of instructing them that teenagers should not really be addicted
in engaging in social media because it might affect their health, their grades, their
relationship to the family and their way of thinking.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media has also affected their relationship with their parents even if they are
being instructed by them to not overuse the internet because it will affect their
personalities an so as their attitude and behavior that might also affect other people
because of what they are doing and acting towards them.

School:
The school is the place where we are developed and nurtured by the help of
our teachers and friends. As for our topic, the school regulates the teenagers in
engaging in social media by way of prohibiting teenagers to use their mobile phones
and other gadgets while they are inside the school so, they will be able to lessen the
contact to the social media that has been affecting them and changing them.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media is being regulated by the school because the researchers observed
that the teenagers are following the rules to not use their mobile phones and
engaging in social media. So, it clearly states that the school can also help in
lessening the engagement of teenagers to social media.

How Social Media affects the Teenager's Personality

Time Management:
Time is important in every person's life. As for our topic, time management
also affects the personality of teenagers through social media engagements. Our
respondents are having a hard time managing their time because of engaging in
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 32

social media. And this affects their personality because they are not able to
efficiently allot time to their every tasks.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media really affects their efficiency to manage their time because they spend
most of their time engaging in social media for their entertainment and for them to kill
time. While some are able because they don't engage in social media that much.
And with these factors, their personalities develop and change that might affect them
in a good way or in a bad way.
Socialization:
As for the "social" in social media, socialization is one of the important factors
that affect the development of a teenager's personality. In this time of our generation
we tend to change ourselves just to fit in. And socialization affects the behavior of
the teenagers because with this the teenagers will be able to freely express
themselves and this might cause their personalities to develop.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of
interviewing has brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of
teenagers today in social media has affect our way of socializing with other people. It
affects us in a way that the teenagers tend to change themselves just to fit in the
society and in the world of social media.

Family Relationship:
The family shapes us to be better persons when we grow up. As for our topic,
family is one factor that affects the personalities of teenagers because they are the
ones who instruct and regulate teenagers in engaging in social media because they
are concerned to our health and our well-being. They help us to minimize the
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 33

engaging in social media because they think that it is not good for us, and that is
right.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media affects their relationship to their family. Some effects were good for
those teenagers whose loved ones are not with them because with the help of social
media they are able to communicate and are able to be updated with each other.
And with those teenagers with their family in their home has a bad effect because
their relationship to their family is being taken away by the social media.
Communication Skills:
Communication is important because it helps us to talk to other people that is
not with us. The teenagers that the researchers interviewed stated that it affects their
communication skills because they copy other people's way of writing. And they are
able to enhance their skills because most of the content of social media is English.
Therefore, by the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has
brought the researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in
social media affects the teenagers' way of communicating to other people. They tend
to use other people's way of writing and speaking. And this affects their personality
because communication is one way of being able to express oneself.

CHAPTER 5
Conclusion and Recommendation
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 34

This chapter contains the conclusion and recommendation for our topic. This
includes the conclusion of the researchers to the chosen topic and the researchers
recommendation for their respondents and research locale.
Conclusion

1. Demographic Profile of the Respondents

By the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has brought the
researchers to a conclusion that there are more female respondents who use social
media than males because Santa Isabel College consists mostly of females. As for
that, the researchers learned the different aspects on how they male and females
use social media like their number of hours in using social media. And also the
preferences for each age and how they facilitate social media engagements.

2. The Purpose of Social Media Engagements

By the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has brought the
researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in social media
is mostly for their entertainment and some for their academically inclined works to
do. For entertainment because they said that when they are not doing anything their
kind of work is using social media because with social media they can freely
communicate with their friends who are not with them and they are able to play
games and watch videos to their liking. And for the academically inclined works
because they need it at school. They use social media to gather knowledge and
information that might help them in their studies and research at school. So, the
researchers can say that using social media has its own advantages and
disadvantages that might affect the development of a teenager's personality.

3. The Following People who Regulate the Social Media Engagements of

Teenagers
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 35

By the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has brought the
researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in social media
has affected their relationship with their parents in regulating their use of social
media and the school that monitors properly of the use of mobile phones to prevent
the teenagers to use social media while inside their school. The parents instruct the
teenagers to minimize the use of social media because they are concerned with their
son and daughters health and condition. While the school regulates the teenagers in
a way of prohibiting so, it will lessen their activity in using social media inside their
schools. So, the parents are able to make their son and daughters to minimize the
use of social media but it also affects their relationship and the school properly
regulates the use of it because of their imposed rules and regulations.

4. How Social Media affects the Teenager's Personality

SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 36

By the researchers' observation and the effort of interviewing has brought the
researchers to a conclusion that the engagement of teenagers today in social media
has affected their capability to manage their time, how they socialize in the internet
and even outside it, their relationship to their family members and their way of
communicating with others. Their capability of managing time because they are
having a hard time doing their chores because of social media eating almost of their
time for the day. Their socialization in the internet because they can change
themselves to fit in there and their socialization outside the internet can also affect
them on how they act towards other people who are not much using social media.
Their relationship of to their family is also affected because too much of their time is
always on social media and because of that they lack time in bonding with them.
Their way of communicating with people on the internet and people that they talk to
everyday is also affected because they tend to use and apply it their everyday life
that affects other people because some are new to them. So, these factors really
affect the personality of teenagers because these factors in some way that causes
teenagers to change and develop themselves so they can cope up to the never
ending development of social media.

Recommendation
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 37

1. Demographic Profile of the Respondents

With the researchers' conclusion stated, the researchers recommend that we
should pick a bigger research locale so the number of male and female respondents
will be balanced. They should also make use of their time in productive ways while
using social media so they may accomplish works that they need to do. And the
younger teenagers should be more careful in using social media because they don't
have much knowledge in it. So, the teenagers should always be aware of the things
that they can do while using social media so they can be productive.

2. The Purpose of Social Media Engagements

With the researchers' conclusion stated, the researchers recommend that
teenagers should make good use of their unlimited time in using social media for
their academically inclined works because they need it more than entertainment.
They should focus more in their studies because after they do these things they can
also find time to do their way of entertaining themselves and do their respective
chores in their homes. So, teenagers should properly manage their time concerning
the use of social media every day so they will be able to be productive while
enjoying social media.
SANTA ISABEL COLLEGE MANIL A
Basic Education Department-Senior High School 38

3. The Following People who Regulate the Social Media Engagements of

Teenagers
With the researchers' conclusion stated, the researchers recommend that the
parents and the school should properly regulate the teenagers and students in using
the social media. The parents should always keep in mind that it is best to prohibit
their child in using social media and give curfew hours in holding their mobile phones
when inside their home, while the schools should be more aware of their students
who are bringing their mobile phones inside the school. So, parents and the school
should impose rules that might lessen their use of social media but also good for the
teenagers condition of wanting to use their mobile phones.

4. How Social Media affects the Teenager's Personality

With the researchers' conclusion stated, the researchers recommend that
teenagers should properly manage their time by making schedules that might help
them in doing chores and being productive while engaging in social media. They
should make good use of how they socialize in social media by effectively using
English fluently in their academic works and in reports and research. They should
also spend time with their family more to make a strong bond with them and to make
this possible, they should control themselves to not use social media so they can to
their family members and share to them the things that they want to say. And lastly,
they should also make good use of their enhanced skills in communicating in social
media and apply it to themselves so they will be able to relay messages clearly. So,
these factors really affect the teenager relationship with their loved ones but at the
same time can be of good use because they learn new thing that they can apply in
their everyday life that develops their personalities even more.

This documentation shows the research locale of the study which is at the
Santa Isabel College Manila. The researches interviewed students from Junior
High School Grade 7 10, Senior High School students, and some College
students. These pictures show how the researchers conducted their interview.

Researchers encountered some difficulties in interviewing the students

because of limited time and some of them are busy with their school works. Also,
college students were hard to find. Others are too shy to be interviewed. Some of
them take it as joke and some answered seriously. But some of them are too
comfortable to interview and they were also encourage the researchers to talk to
them with confidence. Some of them were amazed on how does the process were
conducted because it is new to them.

So, these are the pictures and presentations that show how the researchers
have conducted their interview in collecting and gathering their data that will support
their thesis.
