A PROPOSAL TO RESEARCH THE INTERNET ACCESS PREFERENCE OF STUDENTS

IN IPGK GAYA

Introduction
Internet is the basic need of todays generation. Without it, we may not be able carry
out tasks systematically. Acquiring information from the internet is quite easy at this age and
basically anything about everything can be found on the internet. The problem is that it is
quite hard for us to choose the right internet service provider for our daily life usage. This
problem is clearly noticed in the life of college students who in this day and age, desperately
need internet as a basic necessity.
Objectives
The main objectives for this survey is to find out the preferred internet subscription
configuration of Gaya Teaching Institute students. Other than that, we also are conducting
this survey to give future college intake a brief hint on how to choose the right internet plan
for their life in college. Because of that, would like to do a survey to determine the type of
Internet service provider that the current college students are using, what plan are the
subscribed to, the device they use and why they prefer it.
Our survey includes both preferred internet plan configuration and the preferred
device that they are using to provide them with internet access. Our survey also functions as
a benchmark for the most suitable internet service provider and internet plan package for
students in terms of price, speed and reliability. Besides that, we also want to find out how
much an average student would want to spend for internet accessibility and how much data
quota do an average student need in order to survive college life.

Importance of the Study

This study will be important as we need to choose the most preferred internet
service provider for the benefit of college students. Since we are in the 21st century, the
learning style has changed. We are gradually moving from the traditional way of teaching
and learning to a more modern way of learning in which technology is involved. Textbooks
are replaced with electronic gadgets such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. They are
useless without Internet access which connect us with unlimited information. Therefore, a
reliable internet service provider is very essential for todays classroom.

Literature review
Based on a study done on some college student on 2008, it is stated that up to 49%
of student first began using internet in college and about 86% of all college student had gone
online (Jones, 2008). Other than that, we also know that student usually get stressed out by
internet delays, but never made a complaint about it to the service provider. (Sears, Jacko, &
Borella, 1997). This is because, the use of internet among students is to solve various
educational task (Khananov, Polat, de Morentin, & Moisseeva, 2003) and this is proven as
the internet is an innovation with a lot of potential for both teaching and learning (Gibson &
Oberg, 2004).
Methodology
Participants
The study is targeted to all Gaya Teaching Institute students. Each classes consist around
14 - 25 students. There are five main options in our college, which are English, Bahasa
Malaysia, Mathematics, History, Pendidikan Islam and Art. The students involved in the
study come from mixed socioeconomic status, race, and gender. Students will also range in
a wide variety of Internet service provider usage.
Materials
We use Gmail and Whatsapp to and keep track on our survey and communicate with
each other after lecture classes. Moreover, we made the survey form using Google Docs.
We will also be using Google Docs to distribute the survey forms online by generating a
link so that it could be easily accessed by everyone.
Procedures
The study will be done in Gaya Teaching Institute. The data collection will be
scaffold depending on the data. Students fill up the Google survey form online by accessing
the link that will be given. The questions will be rated from the scale of 1 to 5, and free
response. The survey form consists of two parts. Part one will focus on the type of internet
service the respondent uses, how much data the respondent uses and how much they pay
for their data. Part two focuses on the device used by the students. For example, the device
they use to surf the internet and how reliable it is. Surveys will be collected and analysed
from time to time until all the respondents have answered the survey form.

The questions that we brought up in our survey will help us to collect all the
data needed for this study. The questions are about internet service provider that the current
college students are using, what plan are the subscribed to, the device they use and why
they prefer it. For example, we will ask what internet service provider they are subscribing to
and the respondent will choose the answer provided according to what internet service
provider they are currently subscribing to.
