Week One Assignments

This document contains the three assignments for week one. The first assignment section

consists of only a link to the Voki assignment. The second section includes a list and strategies

for the ten challenges in instructional design. The final section contains the components of the

design model and rules for designing for motivation.

Voki Assignment

The Voki assignment allowed us to create our own avatar and use various methods for

adding audio to create a video. I used text-to-speech for my Voki. Here is a link to my

recorded Voki for week one. http://www.voki.com/site/pickup?

Instructional Design Challenges

For this assignment, I will list the ten challenges in instructional design, as mentioned by

Pappas (2015), and provide two strategies for overcoming each:

1. Designing and developing powerful eLearning courses

a. Clear objectives should be written down to assist with maintaining focus during

the instructional process.

b. Case studies, examples and real world scenarios should be used whenever

possible to allow learners to apply and retain the knowledge.

2. Identifying key issues
a. Content for training may need to be broken down into smaller sections so that

learners remain engaged in the learning process.

b. Instructional designers need to be able to evaluate a plethora of information and

be able to break it down into meaningful content for learners to absorb.

3. Choosing the right instructional design model
a. An appropriate instructional design model will give value and structure to the

problem.

b. An instructional design model should be chosen with the future in mind, allowing

flexibility and adaptation for future content.

4. Managing the eLearning project
a. Prioritizing tasks and good time management of the project are necessary to keep

the process flowing smoothly.

b. Establishing a good communication practice with all involved parties is necessary

for a successful project.

5. Crafting the art of communication
a. The target audience must be defined so that the correct communication methods

can be chosen.
b. Analyzing the audience allows an opportunity to gather data that will be useful in

designing an effective course.

6. Dealing with people
a. Hold regular communication meetings with partners so that everyone is on the

same page with how the course needs to be designed and implemented.
b. Clear expectations should be shared with partners so that the project is designed

to meet the needs and desires of the stakeholders.

7. Resolving problems effectively
a. Instructional designers need to be flexible and be must able to adapt to

unexpected changes.
b. It is important to network with other instructional designers to stay abreast of new

technology and issues in the field.

8. Overcoming mistakes
a. Use mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow.
b. Embrace the process of trial and error to increase creativity and learning.
9. Always keep learning
a. An instructional designer must have a passion for learning.
b. Instructional designers need to constantly learn about new trends and expand their

knowledge in the field.

10. Staying current with technology
a. It is important to use the most up-to-date versions of eLearning programs and

tools.
b. Learn about new technology and trends by visiting blogs and forums with others

in the industry.

Brilliance Learning Design

In this section, I will define the three components of the Brilliance Learning Design

model and identify the six rules that are used for designing for maximizing motivation.

Three Key Components

1. People This is who will be learning during the training session. It is necessary to

understand the audience so that the learning can be designed to meet their needs.
2. Content This is what the learners will be learning. The course objectives will be

identified and relevance to the learners will be explained.

3. Learning Design This is how the content will be delivered to the learners. This is

accomplished by using the ENGAGE Model.

a. Energize learners
b. Navigate content
c. Generate meaning
d. Apply to real world
e. Gauge and celebrate
f. Extend learning to action
