Heat Transfer (AE309) B.E.-3(AERO)
Assignment I (13.02.2014)
Answer all the questions

1. Derive the 3D heat transfer equation for the cylindrical and spherical coordinates.
Hint: Just apply the coordinate conversions for the respective coordinate system in the
equation derived in rectangular coordinate system.
Marks: 2+2

2. A 4-m-long section of an air heating system of a house passes through an unheated space in
the attic. The inner diameter of the circular duct of the heating system is 20 cm. Hot air enters
the duct at 100 kPa and 65C at an average velocity of 3 m/s. The temperature of the air in the
duct drops to 60C as a result of heat loss to the cool space in the attic. Determine the rate of
heat loss from the air in the duct to the attic under steady conditions. Also, determine the cost
of this heat loss per hour if the house is heated by a natural gas furnace having an efficiency
of 82 percent, and the cost of the natural gas in that area is ` 3.9 per unit (1 unit = 1kWhr.).
Discuss your result and do the analysis by writing a program and plotting the Velocity vs. Cost
curve in MATLAB. Program should also be submitted along with the assignment.
Marks: 6

P.S. Meet your instructor and discuss any difficulty if you face while working out with
assignment.
