About This Specialization

This Specialization covers the fundamentals of strategic nancial management, including nancial accounting, investments, and corporate
nance. You will learn to evaluate major strategic corporate and investment decisions and to understand capital markets and institutions from
a nancial perspective, and you will develop an integrated framework for value-based nancial management and individual nancial decision-
making.

The Financial Management Specialization is part of the University of Illinois iMBA Program. Each course in this Specialization also fullls a

About the Course


In this course, you will learn foundations of nancial accounting information. You will start your journey with a general overview of what
nancial accounting information is and the main nancial statements. You will then learn how to code nancial transactions in nancial

Investments I: Fundamentals of Performance Evaluation

About the Course


In this course, we will discuss fundamental principles of trading o risk and return, portfolio optimization, and security pricing. We will
study and use risk-return models such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and multi-factor models to evaluate the performance
of various securities and portfolios. Specically, we will learn how to interpret and estimate regressions that provide us with both a
benchmark to use for a security given its risk (determined by its beta), as well as a risk-adjusted measure of the securitys performance
(measured by its alpha). Building upon this framework, market eciency and its implications for patterns in stock returns and the asset-
management industry will be discussed. Finally, the course will conclude by connecting investment nance with corporate nance by
examining rm valuation techniques such as the use of market multiples and discounted cash ow analysis. The course emphasizes
real-world examples and applications in Excel throughout. This course is the rst of two on Investments that I am oering online
(Investments II: Lessons and Applications for Investors is the second course).

The over-arching goals of this course are to build an understanding of the fundamentals of investment nance and provide an ability to
implement key asset-pricing models and rm-valuation techniques in real-world situations. Specically, upon successful completion of
this course, you will be able to:
Explain the tradeos between risk and return
Form a portfolio of securities and calculate the expected return and standard deviation of that portfolio
Understand the real-world implications of the Separation Theorem of investments
Use the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and 3-Factor Model to evaluate the performance of an asset (like stocks) through
regression analysis
Estimate and interpret the ALPHA () and BETA () of a security, two statistics commonly reported on nancial websites
Describe what is meant by market eciency and what it implies for patterns in stock returns and for the asset-management
industry
Understand market multiples and income approaches to valuing a rm and its stock, as well as the sensitivity of each approach to
assumptions made
Conduct specic examples of a market multiples valuation and a discounted cash ow valuation

Investments II: Lessons and Applications for Investors

About the Course


In this course, you will start by reviewing the fundamentals of investments, including the trading o of return and risk when forming a
portfolio, asset pricing models such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the 3-Factor Model, and the ecient market
hypothesis. You will be introduced to the two components of stock returns dividends and capital gains and will learn how each are
taxed and the incentives provided to investors from a realization-based capital gains tax. You will examine the investment decisions
(and behavioral biases) of participants in dened-contribution (DC) pension plans like 401(k) plans in the U.S. and will learn about the
evidence regarding the performance of individual investors in their stock portfolios. The course concludes by discussing the evidence
regarding the performance of actively-managed mutual funds. You will learn about the fees charged to investors by mutual funds and
the evidence regarding the relation between fees charged and fund performance. Segments of the portfolios of mutual funds that may
be more likely to outperform and examples of strategies designed to earn alpha will also be introduced.

Learners are welcome to take this course even if they have not completed "Investments I: Fundamentals of Performance Evaluation," as
the rst module contain a review of investment fundamentals and regression analysis to get everyone up to speed. Also, the course
