Features and enhancements

3.13.1 release
VEEAM Support with StoreOnce Catalyst: Adds support for a StoreOnce Catalyst integration
with Veeam Backup and Replication version 9. StoreOnce version 3.13.1 is the minimum
supported software version for Veeam Backup and Replication version 9 with StoreOnce Catalyst.
StoreOnce Catalyst default transfer policy: Low Bandwidth transfer policy has been made
the default transfer policy within the StoreOnce GUI when creating new StoreOnce Catalyst
stores.
Initialization Performance improvements: In software prior to 3.13.1 software, replication
database backup ran after failed over service set finished initializing. Both replication and
StoreOnce Catalyst database backups now run once per calendar day to improve performance
after service sets initialize. (BZ 69140)
NFS share names hidden from browsers: In software prior to 3.13.1 NFS share names were
shown to arbitrary NFS browsers. New StoreOnce CLI commands are available to show and
control the NFS browseability flag. The StoreOnce CLI has a new line in the command nfs
show config [setX], which shows the NFS browseability flag value. There are two new
CLI commands: nfs enable browsing and nfs disable browsing to modify this flag;
no restarts, reboots etc are required for this to take effect. (BZ 67838)

3.13.0 release
Networking
Jumbo frames (all products): StoreOnce software version 3.13.x and later allows the user to
define the amount of data contained in an Ethernet frame, the default is 1500 bytes. Larger size

Operating systems 3
frames, often referred to as "Jumbo" frames, can improve performance of the Port Set; the
maximum is 9000 bytes. Smaller frames are also supported; the minimum is 1280 bytes.
Static IP routing (HP 6500 and B6200 only): The Static Routing feature allows the user to define
a path so that the StoreOnce Backup can connect to a network that is not directly accessible
from any of the gateways that are already configured. It is available for the Management subnet
of the StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 systems only. It may be required where a Data subnet is
configured for access across the WAN, and the Management subnet also requires access to a
network that is not accessible via the configured default gateway (which is on the Data subnet).
An example would be where the AD server is on an isolated management network subnet with
routing restrictions.

VTL tape emulation

Support for the IBM-TS3500 IBMi emulation type: The IBM-TS3500 IBMi is a tape library device
that appears as a native IBM TS3500 IBMi device in a TSM environment to allow the use of
standard IBM drivers. All drives configured with the IBM-TS3500 IBMi emulation type will use
the IBM-LTO5 drive emulation type.

Plugins
Support of the SAP HANA Catalyst plugin with StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel

StoreOnce VSA
Data storage disk types: 1 TB, 5 TB and 10 TB thin provisioned disks are now supported for
data storage with VMware and Ubuntu KVM; 1 TB, 5 TB and 10 TB dynamically expanding
disks are supported for data storage with Hyper-V.
Hyper-V PowerShell Installer script: The script has been enhanced to allow configuration of
storage, timezone and setting of the admin user password during the StoreOnce VSA deployment.
StoreOnce VSA Ubuntu KVM bash Installer: This is a new script provided with the StoreOnce
VSA package. This script allows the user to deploy a StoreOnce VSA on UbuntU KVM
environment and configure network, storage, timezone, and set Admin credentials during
StoreOnce VSA deployment.

Event and Audit Log

Introduction of Event codes: The event code is a unique error code assigned to that particular
event (for example, all login events will have the same error code). It is used to identify and filter
types of error.
Event acknowledgement: Using the Acknowledge events feature, the user can hide events in
the Events log without having to delete them. This means only the latest and most relevant
messages display when the user logs into the GUI and opens the Events page.
Acknowledged Only events filter: Once the user acknowledges an event, it is hidden from view,
so there is a new events filter, Acknowledged Only, that the user can apply when searching for
events.
Remote event suppression: The Enable Remote Event Suppression mode that can be set on
the StoreOnce CLI or GUI allows the user to suppress the automated actions behind events
with features like Remote Support and Insight remote support (IRS). When enabled, Remote
Event Suppression flags all outbound event messages to let the HP Support team know that
the system is undergoing some form of maintenance, such as network reconfiguration, that
does not require a case to be raised with HP Support. The Enable Remote Event Suppression
mode ends automatically after 24 hours but may be disabled manually prior to that. It will also
get disabled during a reboot.

4 Features and enhancements

IMPORTANT: The Remote Event Suppression mode is for use only on systems running
StoreOnce software version 3.13.0 or later.

Supportability
SNMP on StoreOnce GUI: The SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) GUI page allows
you to view and modify SNMP Agent configuration parameters, view common attributes for
Registered Trapsinks, and view the Users list. You still need to use the HP StoreOnce Backup
CLI to perform more advanced operations, such as to add or delete trap hosts, to add or delete
users, or to enable or disable SNMP.

Remote Support
Single Entitlement page on the StoreOnce GUI: There is a single Entitlement page that
captures server warranty information from the BIOS, where possible, and greatly simplifies the
way this information is displayed and recorded. Warranty details for storage and switches are
no longer recorded on the Remote Support pages.

NOTE: Where the product was shipped after September 2014, the correct values have been
automatically programmed into the BIOS within the factory, and do not need customer interaction
to update them. For earlier products, the customer may need to re-enter server warranty
information after upgrade. See also Known Issues.

Some performance data is now sent via Remote Support (for those who are registered).

been translated, but some localized screen shots were missing. This is fixed in 3.13.0 for all
StoreOnce GUI screen shots. (BZ 58622)
Release notes and Customer Advisory were required to ensure the customer powers
down the system and waits at least 1 minute after firmware upgrade: This has been fixed
in these release notes and in all documents that reference software upgrade. Revised PDFs
are available on http://www.hp.com/go/storage/docs. (BZ 59493)
StoreOnce GUI error Parameter (entry Id) is not a valid UINT_16 reported for some
Replication NAS items in shares with 65537 or more files and directories: A logical error
has been discovered in the StoreOnce GUI reporting for NAS replication items where the variable
used to reference the items in NAS shares is no longer sufficiently large to cater for the increased
NAS share limit of 1 million files and directories, introduced in 3.11.0. As a result, the StoreOnce
GUI pages for Replication NAS mappings throw an error when items with IDs greater than 65536
are selected. This issue is fixed in 3.12.2. (BZ 65218)
Federated Catalyst store member may go offline during NetBackup Accelerator backups
causing failures: An issue has been discovered where a Federated Catalyst store member
may go offline during NetBackup Accelerator backups and will remain offline thereafter, preventing
subsequent jobs from completing successfully. This issue is due to an unexpected condition
around a StoreOnce cloning feature, used extensively by NetBackup Accelerator, resulting in
an internal error and the store going offline. This is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 64705)
StoreOnce Catalyst Bandwidth Limiting fields in the GUI display as Kbps but store as
Bps: A logical error has been discovered in the 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 StoreOnce GUI page for
StoreOnce Catalyst Bandwidth Limiting Windows where user-entered values are incorrectly
stored in units of bytes per second (Bps) but appear to be correctly configured as Kilobits per
second (Kbps). This error results in a lower than expected bandwidth allowance for StoreOnce
Catalyst throughput during limiting windows and is fixed in 3.12.2. (BZ 63105)
Access lost to Active Directory configured NAS CIFS shares when a new share is created:
An issue has been discovered on 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 releases with Active Directory configured
NAS CIFS shares where access to existing shares may be lost when a new share is created.
This issue is due to an error in managing share permissions set using the Microsoft Management
Console (MMC), which were not being saved in the StoreOnce internal CIFS database. Upon
creating a new share the StoreOnce CIFS server re-synchronizes the permissions of the existing
shares with the values in its internal database, overriding the permissions set using the MMC.
This issue is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 59333)
Software and firmware upgrades abort due to a failure to stop file services: This issue
was due to a logical error where some of the processes for an internal file system maintenance
script may not receive terminating signals when the service sets are stopped and would continue
to run, keeping the file system occupied and preventing it from being unmounted. This issue
may be seen with 3.9.x, 3.11.x, 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 software and is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ
44467, 53278, 57190)
Unable to add capacity licenses in StoreOnce mixed clusters due to maximum licenses
already applied error: An issue has been discovered with StoreOnce mixed clusters where
customers may encounter a maximum licenses already applied error when attempting to apply
capacity licenses. This issue occurs when capacity licenses are over applied for one of the two

Fixes 7
couplet models, causing the system to reach the maximum capacity licenses limit prematurely.
This issue is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 45109)
Errors connecting to host and StoreOnce services after software or firmware updates:
An issue has been discovered on 3.11.x, 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 software where the StoreOnce
management service may fail to start after a software or firmware updates has been performed
and the node(s) restarted. This issue occurs due to a required process hanging or taking an
excessive amount of time to start, resulting in the management service timing out and stopping.
This issue is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 47882)
StoreOnce B6200 commands fail with error /usr/bin/java: No such file or directory or
Cannot parse FMT XML: An issue has been discovered on some StoreOnce B6200 units
upgraded to 3.11.x, 3.12.0 or 3.12.1 where some commands may fail with error /usr/bin/java:
No such file or directory or Cannot parse FMT XML. This is due to the /usr/bin/java symbolic
link not being created in rare circumstances. This is fixed in 3.12.2. (BZ 50535)
Alert events generated due to incorrect FC HBA link down reporting when service sets
are stopped: An issue has been discovered on StoreOnce models with Fibre Channel HBAs
where the HBA links may be incorrectly reported as down when the service sets are stopped
or initially on boot up when the service sets are not yet running. This is due to the FC HBAs
being incorrectly monitored and is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 55953)
Unexpected cluster management performance and node reboots, shutdowns and service
set failovers: Several issues have been identified in 3.11.x, 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 software on
StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 Backup systems where the behavior or performance of the
management interface may be inconsistent and nodes and service sets may appear to randomly
reboot, shutdown and failover unexpectedly. This behavior is due to more than one issue and
includes: incorrect HBA monitoring, too many open file errors on reaching default limits for
java, and logical errors and race conditions in the underlying cluster management software.
These issues have all been fixed in 3.12.2. (BZ 63773, 57358, 55953, 54922, 46978)
StoreOnce NAS shares with previously full segments may occasionally go offline: A rare
issue has been encountered on NAS shares that have previously reported full segments and
has since had some of its data deleted and its segments rebalanced where those NAS shares
may on rare occasions go into an offline state. This issue is due to an error that may occur when
an internal NAS process attempts to truncate data on a full segment, which may fail and cause
the process to eventually stop unexpectedly. This issue is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 55458)
Cancelled running NAS Replication data jobs when files on target share are simultaneously
accessed: An issue has been discovered where running NAS Replication jobs may cancel
when the associated files on the target share are being accessed at the same time. This issue
is due to a race condition between the Replication and NAS processes accessing and modifying
the files on the target share and is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 63232)
NAS CIFS shares inaccessible when special characters are in share description: An issue
has been discovered in 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 software where NAS CIFS shares using certain special
characters in the share description are not accessible or visible in Windows Explorer. The special
characters include , *, &, %, + and multiple spaces in a row. This issue is fixed in 3.12.2 and
later. (BZ 62263)
Flash not Attempted 0x1073 displayed when trying to firmware update StoreOnce
6500 switches: An issue has been discovered when attempting to firmware update the switches
in a StoreOnce 6500 appliance that an error can occur displaying the following message: Flash
not Attempted 0x1073 Failed to copy firmware file <file> to network switch <switch-ip>.
Please check if the switch is reachable and has enough free space to copy the firmware
file. This is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 57148)
Missing enablement of StoreOnce Catalyst, Replication and Security Pack features after
applying VSA 10TB to 50TB Upgrade licenses: An issue has been discovered with StoreOnce
VSA appliances using 3.12.0 and 3.12.1 software where after applying a VSA 10TB to 50TB 3

8 Fixes
year or 5 year upgrade license the StoreOnce Catalyst, Replication and Security Pack features
would no longer be enabled. This was due to an incorrect product definition file for this license
and is fixed in 3.12.2. (BZ 62683)
VTL errors reported after performing Delete All cartridges: An issue has been discovered
where in some cases the Delete All cartridges operation may take longer than expected and
will time out before the delete operation has completed, leaving the VT library and overall status
of the Virtual Tape service in an error state. This is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 64286)
Throughput metrics inaccuracies may be observed during periods of high data transfers:
A logical error has been discovered in the throughput metrics calculations that may result in a
numerical inaccuracy being introduced during periods of consistently high data transfers. This
is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 63888)
External admin users encounter errors executing config save keystore and uploading
files to /jail/repository: An issue has been discovered where external users and groups defined
with StoreOnce admin-level privileges encounter Failed to open output file for writing errors
when attempting to save encryption keystore configuration with the StoreOnce CLI command
config save keystore and encounter access/permission errors when uploading files to
the /jail/repository directory. This issue is due to external admin users and groups not
being assigned the same write-access as local admin users to the /jail/config and /jail/
repository directories and is fixed in 3.12.2 and later. (BZ 64395)

3.13.1 release
When using the Replication wizard from the Source appliance to create an encrypted VTL library
on the Target appliance, the newly created VTL will not be encrypted. This issue is not present
when creating the VTL directly on the Target and is therefore the recommended method for
creating an encrypted VTL. This issue will be fixed in future releases. (BZ 75059)
IPv4 default gateway is not set up correctly on HP StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 Backup
systems: With StoreOnce software 3.13.1 and later the default IPv4 gateway cannot be
configured on a VLAN subnet for HP StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 Backup systems. This will be
addressed in a later software release and does not apply to single-node systems. (BZ 73560,
65747)
StoreOnce Catalyst Write Throughput value with NetBackup accelerator: When using
NetBackup Accelerator and viewing the associated StoreOnce Catalyst data jobs records in the
StoreOnce GUI the "Write Throughput" will be displayed higher than expected. The correct Write
Throughput value can to calculated as "Data Written / Write Duration = Write Throughput". This
applies only to NetBackup Accelerator backups in which Catalyst clone functionality is used.
Reporting Central may fail to communicate with registered StoreOnce appliances after
upgrading from 3.13.0 to 3.13.1: When upgrading from 3.13.0 to 3.13.1 Reporting Central
may fail to communicate with registered StoreOnce appliances that were added whilst the system

acting as the monitoring host was running 3.13.0 software. When this occurs Reporting Central
will report the appliance state as Unknown and status Unable to connect. This is due to the
SSL certificate stored on the monitoring host being removed. To resolve, re-import certificates
for any devices for which Reporting Central no longer works. This issue will be fixed in a software
release expected in April, 2016.
Replication performance affected by increased metadata update workload: In some corner
cases, if NFS v2 shares contain a large number of files and are generating a significant amount
of data change, replication performance will be slow, potentially leaving the shares in out of
sync state for an extended amount of time. 3.13.1 improves the replication performance in this
situation but a complete fix is only expected in a future release of the StoreOnce software. (BZ
71137, CFI 9018))
Access to CIFS shares lost: In some rare corner cases CIFS shares could become
inaccessible. To address this, restart the CIFS services on the node. (BZ 57541, BZ 61386 and
CFI 6587)
Recovery Manager Central (RMC) compatibility: The StoreOnce 3.13.1 code is not compatible
with RMC version 1.2 and below; use RMC version 1.21 or later. This will be resolved with future
RMC releases.

to check the Event Database size in the StoreOnce GUI on the Events page before upgrade.
Upgrades may fail when the number of events is greater than 50,000. To reduce the number
of events use the Delete button in the GUI to remove older events and reduce the number to
less than 48,000. (BZ 65824)
Unable to change StoreOnce user passwords when a NAS CIFS Server user is defined
with the same name: An issue has been identified where passwords for StoreOnce appliance
users cannot be changed when a user with the same name is defined for the NAS CIFS Server.
Attempting to change a StoreOnce user password will result in Error: Failed to change
user password. Customers are advised to avoid creating NAS CIFS users with the same
name as StoreOnce appliance users. This issue will be fixed in a future StoreOnce release,
expected in December 2015. (BZ 45090, 66047, 66048)
Static routing with StoreOnce 6500 and B6200: Do not use the static routing feature if you
are using a data and management subnet on the same portset. (BZ 66017)
Domain name resolution with StoreOnce Federated Calatalyst: When configuring systems
for StoreOnce Federated Catalyst HP recommends using direct IP addresses rather than Fully
Qualified Domain Names as some customers have experienced issues with name resolution.
(BZ 65990, 66336)
Recommended AIX NFS mount options: The HP StoreOnce Backup Linux and Unix
Configuration Guide has not yet been updated for AIX. A customer advisory is available. (BZ
52251)

warrantyserial command execution error when restoring from the config file: With
StoreOnce 3.13.0 software, the format for the StoreOnce CLI command has been changed to
system set warrantyserial, and the command accepts only entitlement. With earlier
software versions there were four valid parameters, server, storageMSA, driveEnclosure,
networkSwitch. A config file, created using the config save devicescommand prior to
software version 3.13.0, will contain the warranty serial information for these four components,
and a warrantyserial command execution error will occur if the same config file is
used for restore with StoreOnce software 3.13.0 or later. (BZ 64074)
Remote Support Entitlement: Both the StoreOnce CLI and GUI now display server warranty
entitlement only.
StoreOnce B6200: If the customer has previously entered the warranty serial number for
the server only, the software will continue to use the same number for server, storage and
switch attached to the server, if the customer has previously entered different warranty
serial numbers for storage and switch, they will no longer be displayed.
StoreOnce 6500: The software will either use the warranty serial number, if it can find it in
the system, or the customer entered value. No data is lost if the customer entered value
was the same for server, storage and switches. If the customer had entered different values
for server, storage and switch, it was invalid and is no longer displayed.
StoreOnce 2700, 2900 and 4500: The software upgrade is able to extract the correct
warranty serial number from the system and uses that. If the customer had entered warranty
details for storage, these are no longer displayed.
StoreOnce 4700 and 4900: The software upgrade uses either the warranty serial number
from the system, if available, or the customer-entered serial number. Any storage details
are no longer displayed.

IMPORTANT: No longer exposing the previously entered switch or storage information does
not impact any functionality of the system; it is just simplifying the process from a customer
perspective. The same entitlement will be provided.

NOTE: Remote Support is not available for StoreOnce 2620, 4210, 4220, 4420, 4430 or VSA.

Timezone does not set correctly: StoreOnce software version 3.13.0 is released with an
updated list of timezones, however some of the recently added timezone items cannot be set
by using the StoreOnce CLI command time set timezone and choosing any of these
timezones will result in setting the default GMT timezone. If this occurs, please use any other
suitable timezone. (BZ 64217)
StoreOnce Catalyst store items created with 3.11.x software require HP support assistance
for Federated Store expansions in 3.12.x and later: An issue has been discovered with
StoreOnce Catalyst store items created with 3.11.x where after upgrading to 3.12.0 or 3.12.1
and expanding to a larger Federated Catalyst store, the items created from 3.11.x will no longer
be visible or accessible and HP Support assistance will be required to correct. This issue only
occurs for 3.11.x created items and only if the store is Federated Catalyst expanded in 3.12.0
or 3.12.1. As of 3.12.2 checks are in place to detect affected items and prevent store expansions,
however customers will still need to contact HP Support to resolve the issue and enable
Federated Catalyst expansions for affected stores. (BZ 63106)
Unable to configure networking or show/update firmware after upgrading to 3.11.x or
later on StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 systems: An issue has been discovered on StoreOnce
6500 and B6200 systems upgraded to 3.11.x, 3.12.0 or 3.12.1 where activating a new network

configuration may fail or the firmware show/update commands may error with the message
cannot execute this command. System is busy querying firmware version. Please try again
later. These issues are due to a mismatch between the reported and expected numerical
identifiers for the nodes, causing these dependent command operations to fail. As of 3.12.2 the
software upgrade process will detect and report the error and abort the upgrade if found.
Customers with the issue should seek assistance from HP Support to resolve. (BZ 61370)
StoreOnce B6200 GUI and CLI report missing or failed IO cache modules after firmware
updating or power cycling the HP 2000 storage: An issue has been identified with some
B6200 systems where the CompactFlash cards used in the P2000 storage may become disabled
after power-cycling the controllers or performing a firmware update. When this issue occurs the
P2000 storage will remain operational but with reduced performance. This issue is due to a
specific model of CompactFlash card, which was discovered to have a fault, and may be present
in some B6200 systems. Contact HP Support, who will help to replace the CompactFlash card
with HP part number 768079-001.(BZ 53101)
Reporting Central Reports may not generate using an end date equal to the current date:
When using Reporting Centrals custom range feature, selecting an end date equal to the current
date can result in an error preventing the generation of the report. Reports using the pre-selected
ranges will generate the current date values correctly and a fix for this issue will be available in
a future software release. (BZ 58805, 58386)
HP StoreOnce 2900 Backup capacity reporting: Unlicensed capacity is reported incorrectly
for the HP StoreOnce 2900 Backup. This does not impact the capacity available after a successful
license addition and storage expansion.
Domain names with more than 4 characters cannot be used when configuring the email
server on the StoreOnce GUI: Email server domain names with top-level domains more than
4 characters long, such as ".local", will fail validation at the configuration screen and cannot be
entered. A workaround can be used where the email server IP address is entered instead. This
behavior will be corrected in a future software release. (BZ 57457)
Unable to add an external user to the AD domain (HP 6500 and HP B6200 only): When
adding external users in User Management, ensure that all service sets in the cluster have been
joined to the Active Directory domain in the NAS CIFS server settings. If all the service sets
have not been joined to the Active Directory domain, addition of external users may fail or any
previously added external users may not be available. (BZ 55979, 55931)
A "Please Wait" message displays when viewing Federated StoreOnce Catalyst stores:
Following a failover, if the StoreOnce Catalyst stores page of the StoreOnce GUI is opened and
there are Federated StoreOnce Catalyst stores configured, a pop up box with the message
"Please Wait" may appear and never disappear unless the StoreOnce GUI times out or the
browser is refreshed. This will be fixed in a future release. (BZ 45254)
SNMP traps not sent to trap receiver: If the StoreOnce SNMP appliance is set up with SNMPv3
or with an IPv6-only network configuration, no traps may be sent to the trap receiver. This will
be fixed in a future release. (BZ 52899, 51322, 51522)
All items in the search list for host name lookup may not be checked for a host name
match: If an HP StoreOnce system is configured to obtain DHCPv6 addresses, any domains
that have been statically defined by the user may be ignored in favor of the domains specified
by the DHCPv6 server. It is strongly recommended that the domain name is specified even
when configuring a DHCPv6 subnet. This will be fixed in a future release. (BZ 51409, 51520)
Failure to acquire DNS and domain name information from DHCPv6 Server: (Single-node
StoreOnce platforms only, not StoreOnce 6500 and B6200) DNS Server and domain name
information will not be acquired in the following Subnet configuration: VLAN Tag Enabled Subnet
configured, addressing mode set to DHCP with the expectation of acquiring IPv6 address details,
and DHCPv6 Server is running on a Windows Server operating system. In this configuration it

is possible to manually provide the DNS Server and domain name that should have been
acquired via DHCPv6. (BZ 51262, 51409)
StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel is currently not supported on SUSE Enterprise
Linux 11 SP3. Only Service Pack 2 and lower are supported.
Setting a quota in the replication wizard is not possible: When configuring VTL and NAS
Replication mappings it is not currently possible to set a quota within the Replication wizard.
Where quotas are required on a Replication target it is necessary to set the quota after the target
VTL or NAS creation, or create the VTL or NAS targets before launching the Replication wizard.
Quotas with StoreOnce Federated Catalyst: StoreOnce Federated Catalyst stores that reach
their quota limit will fail a Catalyst backup as expected but the Federated Catalyst store will not
be set to a Warning state within the StoreOnce GUI. This only affects StoreOnce Federated
Catalyst stores. (52042)
StoreOnce VSA and network link connection speed: The StoreOnce VSA GUI and the
StoreOnce CLI command, net show status all, report the network link connection speed
as 1GbE, although the physical link speed is 10GbE. This is a known issue in the reporting of
the network status. StoreOnce VSA does support a 10GbE network link.
Hardware component Unavailable with message Failed to get Hardware report object:
Hardware report is invalid format: In the rare scenario where a hardware component contains
a sub-component with a serial number with a non-printable Unicode character, the internal XML
parser will fail to parse the hardware report and the hardware components will fail to display in
either the GUI Hardware tree or the StoreOnce CLI commands, hardware show. The faulty
hardware component must be identified and replaced by an HP Support engineer.
Manual offline firmware update required for StoreOnce B6200 storage hard drives: Due
to a known issue with the P2000 G3 MSA whereby the required zero I/O to the hard drives is
not guaranteed whilst connected nodes are online, it is necessary to use the manual process
of updating the hard drive firmware over Ethernet connection to the P2000 G3 MSA with the
nodes shutdown. This must be performed by a qualified HP support engineer. For more
information see http://saw.cce.hp.com/km/saw/view.do?docId=emr_na-c03875848 and http://
saw.cce.hp.com/km/saw/view.do?docId=emr_na-c03453671.
StoreOnce B6200 storage Enclosure_IO_Mod firmware does not get upgraded when the
Storage Controller firmware is up to date: The checks to run the Smart Component firmware
upgrade package, which updates both the Storage Controller and the Enclosure IO Module in
the P2000 controller shelf, only test the firmware status of the Storage Controller and not both.
To overcome this issue, use the force option with the StoreOnce CLI command, hardware
update firmware storageX.
NAS shares with over 25,000 files may take a long time to start after an ungraceful power
off: After an ungraceful power off NAS shares containing over 25,000 files may take a noticeably
long time to start whilst the StoreOnce Backup system re-initializes. This is because, after an
ungraceful shutdown, the StoreOnce Backup system needs to rebuild its record of the content
on the NAS share by reading each file. The time required is directly dependent on the number
of files on the share; it has been seen to take approximately 2 hours to re-initialize a share
containing 100,000 files.
Performance considerations with Secure Erase: Secure Erase is intended to be used in
scenarios where the user wishes to securely delete small amounts of highly sensitive data from
the StoreOnce appliance. It is not recommended to keep Secure Erase turned on for an extended
period of time or even permanently. Doing this can have a severe impact on the performance
of the appliance. Securely Erasing an entire VTL, NAS share or Catalyst store can take several
hours or even days depending on the amount of data stored in the device. Backup, recovery,
copy or replication jobs may be impacted due to the increased I/O as a result of the Secure
Erase.

Known Issues and customer advisories 13

Minimum firmware K.15.04.0015m required to upgrade B6200 switches from the StoreOnce
CLI: Due to a known issue with B6200 switch firmware below K.15.04.0015m where the SSH
session may disconnect while copying the new firmware image to the switch, B6200 switches
(HP ProCurve 6600) must be manually updated to minimum firmware K.15.04.0015m. For
information about downloading the latest K.15.04.xxxx firmware refer to http://saw.cce.hp.com/
km/saw/view.do?docId=emr_na-c03452746.
Minimum firmware 4.1.360.15 required on 10GbE NICs before upgrading to 3.10.0 or later:
For StoreOnce 4420, 4430, 4500, 4700, 4900, B6200 and 6500 Backup systems, the 10GbE
network cards must have minimum firmware 4.1.360.15 before upgrading to StoreOnce software
3.10.0 or later as the updated 10GbE drivers in 3.10.0 and later will not work with firmware
below 4.1.360.15, and the 10GbE interfaces will not be operational. To upgrade the 10GbE NIC
firmware the OFFLINE Firmware image (.iso) for HP Emulex NC550/NC552 Network Adapters
must be used. This can be obtained from http://www.hp.com. (BZ 53093, 53663)
Storage name incorrect or displays Uninitialized Name, HP StoreOnce B6200 only: The
new hardware reporting mechanism implemented in 3.11.x for the StoreOnce B6200 Backup
system utilizes the System Name value set in the P2000 controllers for storage reporting. This
value is normally set in manufacturing, however, if the controllers have been replaced after
shipping, the values in the new controllers may not have been reset correctly. The StoreOnce
3.11.x software does not currently check or reset the System Name value in the P2000
controllers. This issue does not affect the functionality of the StoreOnce B6200 Backup system.
Symantec NetBackup LSU spanning fails with HP StoreOnce Catalyst stores and OST
Plugin: The NetBackup LSU spanning feature is not supported or recommended with HP
StoreOnce Catalyst stores and OST Plugin. This is due to a lack of NetBackup support for
asynchronous write operations, which are utilized by HP StoreOnce Backup systems.

Software upgrade installation instructions (all products)

Supported web browsers
The StoreOnce Management GUI is supported on the following web browsers:
Internet Explorer 9, 10 and 11 (note that Internet Explorer 8 is not supported and some StoreOnce
features will not work)
Mozilla Firefox v22 and above and Firefox ESR24 and above

Pre-requisites
IMPORTANT: The software and firmware update processes require service sets to stop and the
system to reboot. These actions are disruptive to any IO running on the system at the time, including:
backup, restore, StoreOnce Catalyst Copy, Replication and housekeeping.
To perform the StoreOnce software upgrade a maintenance window is required in which the unit will
be unavailable for normal operations. When scheduling the maintenance window, please use the
following as guidelines of a typical amount of time that the upgrade will take:
For StoreOnce VSA products, the entire upgrade process is expected to take 30 minutes.
For StoreOnce single-node products, the entire upgrade process is expected to take up to 2
hours, depending on your hardware configuration. The software upgrade is expected to take
40 minutes. A further 20 80 minutes is required to perform necessary hardware firmware
updates.
For StoreOnce multi-node products, the entire upgrade process is expected to take between 3
hours and 10 hours, depending on your hardware configuration. The software upgrade is
expected to take 50 minutes. A further 2 hours per couplet is required to perform necessary
hardware firmware updates.

14 Software upgrade installation instructions (all products)

NOTE: This assumes that the software currently on the StoreOnce product is the current latest
available, and all previous firmware updates have been implemented. If you are upgrading from an
earlier release, please add an additional 25% to the values above.
It is advisable to perform the following checks before carrying out the software update process.
Ensure that no backup or restore jobs are running when the upgrade is started. Any running
backup or restore jobs will fail.

NOTE: With software version 3.11.4 or later, there is a small reduction in usable capacity. If
the system is already approaching maximum capacity utilization, applying this release could
result in future backup jobs failing due to insufficient space now remaining. To avoid this, before
applying this software update:
Review the Events log for any file system capacity events.

Look for the last file system capacity event. If the severity was ALERT, either use your
backup application to expire and delete obsolete data to free space on the system or expand
the system storage.

To protect Customer data, the upgrade utility will check the status of the Product Hardware,
Service Set(s) and Event Database size. If any elements are in a degraded or non-functional
state, the upgrade utility will not carry out the requested software and\or firmware upgrade(s).
if this happens, please use the system with the old software and contact HP Support for further
help.
For improved confidence that the update will be successful when run, the three checks that the
upgrade utility is based upon can be run manually before attempting the upgrade.
Hardware status
To check hardware status run the StoreOnce CLI command, hardware show problems.
If any of the hardware, except HBA_Port, shows a status of removed, failure/failed,
down/offline, the upgrade will be blocked.

IMPORTANT: All configured network ports must be properly connected otherwise they
will be flagged as down/offline and the software upgrade will not proceed.
If there are warnings or errors reported on any of the hardware the details can be found by
running the StoreOnce CLI command: hardware show status <dev-id of failed
hw> detail, where <dev-id of failed hw> is the value shown in the dev-id of
failed hw column of the output from the hardware show problems command.

NOTE: You can also check the Hardware page on the StoreOnce GUI and drill down to
the failed item. Read the Diagnostic messages for the failed hardware and ensure the
problem is rectified before attempting an upgrade.

Service set status

To check the service set status run the StoreOnce CLI command, serviceset show
status. A typical example of the output of this command is shown below:
# serviceset show status

Service Set 1 Status

------------- -------
Overall : Running
StoreOnce Subsystem : Running
Virtual Tape : Running
NAS : Running
StoreOnce Catalyst : Running

Software upgrade installation instructions (all products) 15

Replication : Running
Housekeeping : Running
If any of the service sets is in a state other than Not Started/Running, upgrades will fail.

Event database size

To check the Event Database size look it up in the StoreOnce GUI on the Events page,
where the count is displayed at the top.
We have seen upgrades fail when the number of events is greater than 50,000. If this is
the case the number should be reduced by using the Delete button in the GUI to remove
older events and reduce the number to less than 48,000.

NOTE: For security reasons, events of type "Audit" cannot be deleted as other event
types can. They are managed through the retention period setting.

HP strongly recommends that you perform the following actions immediately prior to starting
the software update process to ensure a smooth update process:
Pull a support ticket and save for future reference.

Back up the system configuration using the StoreOnce CLI command, config save
devices and config save keystore.
For StoreOnce B6200, check the switch firmware using StoreOnce CLI command hardware
show firmware switchX and, if required, please contact HP Support to manually
offline-upgrade to minimum version K.15.004.0015m.
For StoreOnce 4420, 4430, 4500, 4700, 4900, B6200 or 6500, check all 10GbE network
card firmware using StoreOnce CLI command hardware show firmware nodeX and,
if required, please contact HP Support to manually offline-upgrade to minimum version
4.1.360.15.
Make sure that you are using one of the supported web browsers for accessing the
StoreOnce Management GUI:
Internet Explorer 9, 10 and 11 (note that Internet Explorer 8 is not supported and some
StoreOnce features will not work with StoreOnce software version 3.12.0 and later)
Mozilla Firefox v22 and above and Firefox ESR24 and above

Run the firmware management tool (all products apart from VSA)
It is important to check whether firmware updates should be applied after each software update.
This is typically necessary for all StoreOnce hardware configurations. It is not necessary with, nor
supported on, StoreOnce VSA.
We have used the StoreOnce CLI in these release notes to illustrate the firmware upgrade process,
but you can also use the StoreOnce GUI to carry out this task, if preferred. See the user guide for
your product for information about using the StoreOnce GUI.

NOTE: When using the StoreOnce GUI to run firmware management, please note that this tool
does not work with the Internet Explorer 8 web browser; you must use a supported browser (Internet
Explorer 9, 10 and 11, or Mozilla Firefox v22 and above and Firefox ESR24 and above). Refer to
the user guide for your HP StoreOnce Backup system for more details.

NOTE: The above example is from a StoreOnce 6500 or B6200 Backup, which has between
2 and 8 service sets. All other models have a single service set.

6. Use the hardware update firmware command, as required. For example, there may be
instances where replacement hardware may need a firmware downgrade to bring it in line with
the supported firmware version of the installed StoreOnce software on the system being
maintained.
With the HP StoreOnce 6500 or B6200 Backup you must specify the node, storage or switch
and repeat the command for each node, storage and switch in your system. The command
syntax is:
hardware update firmware <nodeX|storageX|switchX>

IMPORTANT: With the HP StoreOnce 6500 or B6200 Backup you must update the firmware
on all nodes, storage components and switches before shutting down or rebooting the system.
Please refer to Customer Notice c04682361 for full details on performing firmware upgrades on
StoreOnce 6500 and B6200 Systems.
With all other HP StoreOnce Backup hardware products the command will be applied across
all server components or across all storage components.
hardware update firmware <node|storage>

7. After the firmware has updated, HP recommends a cold reboot as follows:
Power down the node(s) using the StoreOnce CLI command:
system shutdown

After the system has completely shut down, wait at least one minute before powering on
using the Power On button on the server(s).

IMPORTANT: A cold reboot is required if the network card or storage controller card firmware
has been updated. Also when updated in the past and not power cycled since, perform the cold
reboot now. For other components, it is acceptable to reboot the system using the StoreOnce
CLI command:
system reboot

8. If you are updating a StoreOnce 6500 or B6200 Backup, enable failover using the StoreOnce
CLI command, system enable failover
9. Run system disable remoteeventsuppression to re-enable normal event notification.
If you do not run this command manually, remote event suppression is automatically disabled
after 24 hours.

NOTE: This command is for use only on systems running StoreOnce software version 3.13.0
or later.

To get the VSA running (after upgrading a VSA 1.x to 2.x)

IMPORTANT: This is a required step only if you are upgrading a StoreOnce VSA 1.x system
running 3.7.x software first to 3.11.x and then to 3.13.x and have not completed this step with the
3.11.x upgrade.
The 3.11.x software update process reboots the VSA, and also removes the existing 3year support
license. StoreOnce VSA users must get and apply a new license to re-enable features that they
previously had.

NOTE: If you completed this step with the StoreOnce 3.11.x upgrade continue to To complete
the update (all models).

After the services come up, log into the StoreOnce CLI and run the license add demo
command.
This command enables a 60 day all-in-one Instant-On license. This license enables all the
advanced features and enhancements provided with VSA 2.0. However, after this 60 day period
all backup targets will become read-only.
During this 60 day period contact the HP Licensing portal with the serial number of this VSA.
You will be provided with a product license key which will enable the VSA for the remaining
length of the 3year license term. Use the StoreOnce CLI to apply the product license key.
Continue to To complete the update (all models).
