Time : 3 Hours] [Total Marks : 80
[ Min Passing Marks : 24

Attempt any five questions , selecting one question from each unit. All questions
carry equal marks. Schematic diagrams must be shown wherever necessary. Any
data you feel missing suitably be assumed and stated clearly.
Units of quantities used / calculated must be stated clearly.

UNIT I
1. (a) What is the principle of electrodeposition? State and explain the factors
on which the quanity of electrodeposition depends. (6)

(b) How much aluminium will be produced from aluminium oxide in 24

hours if the average current is 3000 A and current efficiency is
92%.Aluminium is trivalent and its atomic weight is 27. The chemical
equivalent weight of silver is 107.98 and 0.00111 gm of silver is deposited
by one coulomb. ( 10)

OR
1. (a) Explain with the help of a neat sketch the extraction process of
aluminium. (6)

(b) Explain the principal of electrolysis. (5)

(c ) Why it is preferred to supply large chemical works from hydroge-

electric or atomic power stations? (5)
UNIT II
2. (a) Discuss the suitability of D.C. series motor for its application in electro
locomotive for traction duty. (8)
(b) A train is required to run between two stations 2km apart at a schedule of
36km/h. The duration of stops being 20 seconds. The braking retardation is 2.7
km/h/s. Assuming a trapezoidal speed time curve , calculate acceleration if the
ratio of maximum speed to average speed is 1.2. (8)

OR
2. (a) A suburban train run with an average speed of 36kmph between two
stations 1.8 km apart values of acceleration and retardation are 1.8 km/h/s
and 3.6 km/ph/ps. Calculate the maximum speed of the train assuming
trapezoidal speed time curve. (8)

(b) What is tractive effort of a train and what are its function ? Derive an
expression for the tractive effort developed by a train unit. (8)

UNIT III
3.(a) What are the merits and demerits of D.C. system track electrification. (8).

(b) State and explain the track electrification system generally employed for
the following services:
(i) Tramway service in a busy town area.
(ii) Electric suburban railway service.
(iii) Main line railway service.
Justify your answer and mention the voltage adopted in each case . (8)

OR
3. (a) Discuss merits and demerits of the single phase A.C. system for main and
suburban line electrification of the railways. (8)

(b) Explain with the help of neat sketches, the current collection process
from OHE for the electrified tracks. (8)

.
UNIT IV
4 (a) Discuss a method of electric braking for traction motors. (6)

(b) A train is required to run between two stations 1.6 km apart at an average
speed of 40 Kmph. The run is to be made as per the simplified quadrilateral
speed time curve. If the maximum speed is limited to 64 Kmph,
acceleration to 2.0 Kmphps and coating and braking retardation to 0.16
Kmphps and 3.2 Kmphps respectively , determine the duration of
acceleration , coating and braking periods (10)
OR
4 (a) Explain with the help of sketches , the mechanics of train movement.
Discuss the coefficient of adhesion. (6)

(b) An electric train , weighing 200 tonnes , runs at a uniform upgradient of

1% with the following speed time curve:
(i) Uniform acceleration of 2.0 Kmphps for 30 seconds.
(ii) Constant speed for 40 seconds.
(iii) Coating for 30 seconds.
(iv) Braking of 2.5 Kmphps to rest.
(v) Stop at the station for 15 seconds.
If the tractive resistance is 40 N/tonne , rotational inertia effect is 10% of
dead weight and overall efficiency of transmission and motor is 75% ,
determine the scheduled speed , specific energy consumption, total energy
consumption and distance between two stations. (10)

rheostatic starting for a pair of D.C. traction motors. (8)

(b) A multiple unit train weighing 210 tonns is equipped with 6 motors
giving a total tractive effort of 82800 N . The motors operate at a line
voltage of 600V and each motor takes an average current of 200 A during
starting . Series Parallel control is used for starting . The full line voltage is
applied to each motor when the speed reaches 38.6 km/h. Resistance of each
motor is 0.1 .

of electric traction motor? (8)

(b) State with sketches the three important methods of transmission of

mechanical power from traction motor to the driving wheels. (8)
