her 1.2 billion people.
The implication of this population explosion could be
felt in the extent to which infrastructures have been
stretched to their limits. What more, available data
show that 2 in 3 Africans lack access to electricity!

Energy lies at the heart of the fight to combat poverty,
reduce unemployment, and stem economic stagnancy.
And for a continent, like ours, that carries the burden of
a billion+ population, it is inevitable that every home is
powered with sufficient electricity. Adequacy.
The abundance of mineral resources and large markets
posit Africa as a preferred investment destination.
With a luggage of robust economic growth indicators,
Africa's moment is indeed in flight. But in the midst of
these opportunities is a brewing, if not full blown,
energy crisis that is threatening to scuttle the gains
made so far. The worrisome one day on, one day off
electricity situation is hampering businesses, factories
and start-ups. Thus, the onus falls on the political
leadership, with the complement of relevant

stakeholders, to light up Africa with steady power
supply. Reliability.
As Africa works towards a more Adequate and Reliable
Energy supply, we are confronted by the effects of
climate change and global warming, signaling that
power generation from non-renewable energy sources
has come at a great cost to the environment and the
future of the planet. Now is the right time to reorder our
priorities. Engineering is the application of the
sciences to the solution of human and natural
problems in ethical, economical, safe, healthy, and
environmentally friendly manner. Engineers thus have
the responsibility to perform engineering economic
analysis that will form the basis of decisions on
choice/selection from alternative solution. They also
are the experts that will carry out cost engineering to
estimate the costs of selected alternative projects being
designed also by design Engineers. Engineers, in
addition, schedule and control progress on those

and exploit renewable energy sources to guarantee a
clean, healthy, and safe environment. Sustainability.
Let me mention here that, as patriotic and forward-
thinking professionals, the Nigerian Society of
Engineers is strategically positioned to collaborate
with governments, other relevant professionals and
stakeholders in providing the necessary technical
know-how to encourage our policy makers and
industry players into actions that will bring about
sustainable development.
Against the backdrop of the concern by Nigerian
Engineers, we have taken the bold step by bringing our
counterparts in other African nations together for a
roundtable discourse on this knotty issue. To this end,
the Nigerian Society of Engineers in collaboration with
the Federation of African Engineering Organizations
(FAEO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific

African Engineering Conference on Energy, NSE
Annual General Meeting, and UNESCO African
Engineering Week holding in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
(Land of Promise), on November 21 25, 2016, prompt
discourses on the theme, Adequate, Reliable and
Sustainable Energy in Africa. I am optimistic that the
submissions by our Engineers, erudite scholars and
industry players at this auspicious event will provide
our leaders the right platforms for tackling the energy
crisis in Africa.

continent holds
tremendous potentials
for prosperity and this conference shall contribute to
harnessing such potentials by facilitating pragmatic
solutions to our energy challenges.
The conference theme; Adequate, Reliable and
Sustainable Energy in Africa is apt in a time when the
continent's citizens tell awful stories of hardship

occasioned by the absence of power. This challenge is
surmountable.
Nigerian Engineers along with their counterparts on
the continent shall on this 2016 edition of the NSE's
National Engineering Conference, Exhibition and
Annual General Meeting, organised in collaboration
with the FAEO and UNESCO, proffer pragmatic
solutions to energy inadequacy on the continent.
Tagged Land of Promise, 2016 after the host city's
slogan, this special event would be hosted by one of
Nigeria's beautiful cities. Uyo is home to the
continent's newest stadium. The Akwa Ibom

Champions, was nominated in 2014 for Stadium of the
Year in a competition facilitated by StadiumDB which
keeps a database of stadia worldwide.
The city is home to the University of Uyo among other
academic institutions, and hosts recreational centers

Resort and the Tropicana Conference Centre, Venue of

 The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE)
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE or the Society) is the
umbrella organisation for the Engineering profession in
Nigeria and was founded in 1958.
Objective
To promote the advancement of engineering education,
research and practice in all its ramifications. The essence is to
maintain and enhance its members' professional capacities
in order to fulfil their professional obligations in service to
the country and humanity.
Membership
Membership is open to all bearers of qualifications
accredited by the Council of Regulation of Engineering in
Nigeria (COREN). There are seven membership types; fellow,
corporate, associate, graduate, student, corporate firm and
honorary fellow.
Governance
The National Council comprises elected National Executive
Members, branch/division chairmen, representatives of

sister Engineering bodies or institutions and coopted
corporate members. The President is the Chairman of
Council. Overall coordination of the Society's activities is
carried out from the Secretariat currently housed at the
National Engineering Centre, Abuja. The Society also has a

A full time Executive Secretary heads the Secretariat.
Organisation
Divisions: Every engineering discipline practiced in Nigeria
are catered for as divisions within the Society. The arious
disciplines are organised as divisions of the society to enhance
individual career development. There are 19 divisions within

Appraisal/Cost, Automotive, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and
Electronics, Environmental, Geotechnics, Highway,
