1. Introduction
This documents details the procedures to be followed whilst undertaking the installation
of Impressed Current Linear Anodes CP System for Storage Tank bottom plates.
The Impressed Current CP System shall provide protection against corrosion for the
external surface of the bottom plate exposed to corrosive environment.
2. Installation Personnel
This installation requires minor excavation, it is a must to install the MMO Linear
Anodes before the Tank Bottom Plate installation.
1. Identify the location of the Test Station. Small part of the pipeline coating needs
to be removed for Thermit-Welding process.
2. After removal of the coating of size approx. 150x150mm, clean the pipe surface
to expose the bare steel.
3. Use the Thermit Welding Mould and its accessories for cable to pipeline
connection. Strip the cable sheathing to expose the copper core. Place the exposed
core in the Mould. Empty the powder into the Mould and close the lid.
Hold the Mould firmly and ignite the powder using the flint gun provided. Safety
Goggles and Gloves must be worn at this stage.
An exothermic reaction take place in the Mould and fuse the cable to pipe. Slowly
remove the Mould. Test the new connection by hammering the weld joint a few
times.

4. Clean the new weld joint and its surrounding. Use the Corrosion Cap designed for
Thermit-Welding.
5. Place the cable neatly aboveground for connection to Test Station. Label the Pipe
Cable by using Blue PVC Tape.
1. Refer to the approved installation drawings, mark out on the sand the approximate
location where the anodes shall be laid. Use measuring rope with small wood to
mark out the circular shape.
2. Inspect the anodes for damages, look out for any damaged cable connections.
Identify the individual anode rings and label them.
3. Place the anode next to the marked-out circular shape on the sand. Ensure all the
anodes are place in circular pattern.
4. Excavate a small trench for the anodes, approx. 200x200mm, follow the marked-out
pattern.
5. Upon completion of all trenches, pour some Coke Breeze into the trench, approx.
5mm thick.
6. Place the MMO Wire Anodes into the trench that has been filled with some Coke
Breeze. Align the anodes properly. Ensure the cable tails are leading towards the
cable conduit. Label the cable tails with White PVC Tape.
7. Once all anodes are aligned, pour the balance Coke Breeze into the trench. Ensure
all anodes are covered. Do not over filled. Pour some sand on top of the Coke
Breeze. Ensure the trench is fully covered with sand, do not allow any expose Coke
Breeze.
8. Place the Zinc Reference cells as indicated in the drawing. Align the cable tail
towards the cable conduit. Label the reference cell with Green PVC Tape.
9. Backfill the whole area using sand. Ensure the level is as indicated in the Approved
Drawings.
1. Install the Junction Box on Tank Wall once the tank has completed its construction.
Location of Junction Box shall be close to the cable conduit.
2. Ensure all cables from anodes and reference cells are routed towards the Junction
Box. Terminate the cables onto the terminal board provided.
3. Connect a cable to the tank wall, connection can be done using Thermit Welding or
Bolt & Nut connection near to the Junction Box. Lead the cable tail into the Junction
Box.
4. Identify all the cables (structure, anode & reference cell). Lead in 2 more cables
from Transformer Rectifier unit. Connect one cable to Structure and another to
Anodes. Ensure these cables are properly labeled.
1. Upon completion installation of the Junction Box and all cables terminate
accordingly. Connect the Structure cable to the Negative Output of the Transformer
Rectifier Unit and the Anodes to Positive Output.
3. Prior to turning on power supply to the Transformer Rectifier, measure the Structure
Potential, Anode Potential and Refence cell Potential using the Portable CuCuS04
Reference cell. Perform this measurement at Junction Box and Transformer
Rectifier unit. Record the readings.
4. Set the Transformer Rectifier unit to Manual mode and set to minimum output. Turn
on the power supply to the Transformer Rectifier. Check all the warning lights.
5. Measure the current output using a Clamp Meter. It is supposed to be Zero output.
Slowly increase the current output by turning on the knob. Set to 3 amps output and
let the Transformer Rectifier unit stabilize.
6. Remeasure again the Pipe Potential w.r.t portable CuCuS04 reference cells and Zinc
Reference cells. If the potential does not achieve -850mV w.r.t CuCuS04 or
+266mV w.r.t Zinc, slowly increase the current output to 5 amps.
7. Let the system stabilize, perform the measurement again the next day.
8. The Impressed Current CP System has been commissioned. Measure the Structure
Potential again after 1-2 weeks to ensure the Potential is above -850mV w.r.t
CuCuS04 or +266mV w.r.t Zinc Reference cells.
