Europe in Prayer

They say the Bible when they want to pull the wool over your eyes.
In brief, Europe supports its Christianity. We discover with astonishment
what piety oh how much this old cynical Europe yet conceals. An
atmosphere of crusade settles. The Holy Father pronounces anathemas, the
Archbishop of Canterbury ordains prayers for his flock, and the authorities of
the Protestant Churches convoke their faithful in the Houses of God. It seems
that the graves and the vaults of the Middle Ages, long since disappeared,
decomposed, have been opened. In the paved streets of our big cities and in
the Judeo-liberal press, the waves of a strange religious excitation surge.
What has been able to stir up with such a vigor the sacred flame of old
Europe? Is itthe horror of the French thirst for power, the lust for money of
America, the hate of Poland, is it Christian pity towards the German people,
tortured and bullied a thousand times, the inspires the Pope, the Archbishop
of Canterbury, and the Protestant Church to such a holy rage and ardent zeal?
Certainly, what Europe did to Germany, what America did to it, is revolting,
no one can deny it. Nevertheless, what fervent defense of religion addresses
itself against France and America, against Poland and Czechoslovakia, and
fights for a murdered people? Not a word in their favor, but then the most
vociferous and the most screaming against Russia!
Once Russia, which betrayed itself, sold its soul when it entered, on the side
of France and the Western powers, into the war against Germany. The true
Russians, such asRasputin, immediately understood it. At no time, could they
appease their bad conscience. In the struggle against Germany, Russia used

its strength; at the same time, Germany was bled white. Thus, year by year, it
exhausted the resistance of the Germanic essence and the Slavic essence to
the claim of power by the Latin-European countries, who won territory. In
1917, Russia under the rule of the Cadets and the Mensheviks nearly
submitted entirely to the Western world. Following the interior collapse, only
the presence of foreign officers and Western financial aid permitted it, in the
measure possible, to maintain the front against Germany. But for Russia, the
money and the foreign officers would signify the submission to the West
beyond the end of the war, for an indefinite time. By pursuing the war against
Germany, with the support of the Triple Entente, it had lost its independence
by the relation to its Western friends.
In this moment, from the depths of the Russian soul, arose a hate for Europe.
The Russian people felt threatened, very close to subjugation by Europe.
With an untrammeled and forlorn force, they revolted and rejected all that
was European. Western civilization seemed to them as a lure in a trap left out
for them they abandoned this civilization with a contempt charged with
hate.
It was the bourgeoisie who had put the Russian people in this dangerous
situation. The bourgeois was Western; links were constructed between Saint
Petersburg and Paris. Bolshevism was the punishment that the Russian
bourgeoisie received. It was necessary that it should expiate its lack of
political and national instinct by its ruin. The Western spirit was henceforth
excreted as a poison from the Russian body. It was necessary to annihilate the
bearers of this spirit, that is to say exterminate the bourgeois.

The violence with which Russia detached from Europe was its salvation. It
developed a mode of political, social, and economic life contrary to the
European lifestyle and became inaccessible to European influences. This
provoked grand tensions that lead it to a state of constant vigilance in regard
to the West. Given its new barbarian lifestyle, at no point could it rely on
Europe. For it to avoid being put in shackles, as the late Germany, it was
filled entirely with a spirit whose every manifestation was hostile to Europe.
In turning from the West, they finally were brought to consider
evenChristianity as a European affair. Its instinct of conservation ordered it to
equally take its distance in relation to this religious basis of European life.
The fact that, in its struggle against Christianity, it serves Western free
thought, is not determinant. All the forms of Western progress that it seized
are only arms of its barbaric and Asiatic instinct, hostile to Europe. Russia, by
using European means to exterminate the European element it had once
absorbed, took an entirely particular revenge.
The Soviet Revolution of 1917 upset the calculations of the imperialist
powers of the West. By isolating itself, Russia escaped exploitation by the
West. It could not be belittled to the rank of an agrarian colony, producer of
cereals, docilely absorbed into the industrial production of the West. It did not
deliver its natural wealth in particularly its petroleum to Europe. From the
start, the Western powers would not renounce their Russian plunder. They
sent expeditionary corps to annihilate the Bolshevik army and submit the
Russian people to their domination. The White generals were mercenaries, on
sale to Europe, who combated Russia.
The defeat of the White generals showed that the new Russian state was too
strong to be overthrown by an attack. They needed to encircle it, to prepare a

campaign of annihilation with circumspection. The Western powers took their

positions; in a general fashion, the command rested in the hands of the
English.
In this enterprise, Germany had a great importance. It had seen its geographic
position, it could serve as a base of concentration of troops and furthermore,
its men could be engaged as mercenaries. After the debacle, Germany would
have felt close to Russia by reason of their common destiny. To the Western
powers, it could have argued this community, in an open or dissimulating
fashion, according to the circumstances. It would have been ostracized,
detested but never enslaved as that which followed. If, in the eyes of the
West, it would have been a seat of infection, it would have feared to come
too close to it. Germany did not measure up to its destiny. It ranks, as such a
strong honest servant, in the lines of its blackmailers. It was only at Rapallo
that it dared a departure. We remember the scandal that it provoked in
England and in France. Since then, it never more dared to leave the European
front. Consequently, it was an integral part of Europe, equally concerning
constitutional, economic, and cultural politics. It became a province of the
West. Also, it integrated itself more and more into the front that faced Russia.
At Locarno, it subscribed to articles 16 and 17 of the statues of the League of
Nations against Russia, immediately interrupting all commercial and
financial relations with the country, forbidding German citizens from having
relations with the citizens of Russia, cutting all financial, commercial, and
personal relations between Germans and Russians. Germany must listen to
the advice of the League of Nations that recommended by what means of
defense land armies, air, or naval each member country must contribute to
the armed force destined to respect the obligations towards the League of
Nations. Germany must also accept the necessary measures to facilitate

the passage across its territory by armed forces of each member country
participating in a common intervention to ensure respect for the obligations
towards the League of Nations. Under the New Plan, it sacrificed the rest of
its liberty of movement in matters of foreign policy that Locarno had left it.
The global bank of reparations is the institution to organize the financial,
commercial, and economic war against Russia. The campaign of the German
press against Russia, launched for some time, shows with what docility
Germany accepts being used against Russia. This press campaign provoked a
collective psychosis in regards to Bolshevism, of the same type of horror
propaganda that was once aimed at Germany. By all means, we try to hide
that the stimulation of Communist activity in the European countries is only a
form of defense by Russia against the ruthless encirclement by which Europe
wants to crush and subjugate it.
The second Hague Conference developed preparations for the concentration
of European troops against Russia. When the occasion presents itself, the
attack will be launched.
The capitalists of high finance and oil know very well that the people fight
without enthusiasm when they suspect that the challenge of the war is solely
material, that they only act for coal mines and oil fields. If they can assemble
under its flag an army energetic and willing to sacrifice, they must invoke the
protection of moral values. Acrusade attracts more than a raid. In general, it
is only the riffraff who make such incursions. It is necessary to recall this
known phrase to say Bible when we mean cotton, minerals, coal, and
petroleum.

Who other than the Holy Father could pronounce the word of the Bible with
such firmness and force of conviction? He makes it heard and all the
imperialist Europeans smell conquest. In the holy habit of the Pope, the
instincts for untrammeled rapacity are not lacking a hiding place. He raises
his hands for benediction and the looters, at the same moment, invoke
celestial grace for their actions. The prayers loaded with threat are barely
finished when they convert them on the stock exchange into hard cash. The
masters of trusts and European consortia thus hope to be able to fish usufruct
of the natural riches of Russia from the waves of Christian rage. The murmur
of prayers must cover the trenchant voice of the Diktat which the European
currents would like to use to make the Russian people bend.
Although the European imperialists use the cassock of the Vicar of Christ to
hide the exercise of their obscure activity, we do not mean that the Pope is a
docile or forced instrument of their egotistical projects. The Pope is more; he
is the incarnation of the veritable spiritual principle of Europe. Europe, in the
sense of a moral and political individuality, espoused the form of Latinity.
The European space corresponds to the Latin sphere of influence. No one
recognized it better than Dostoevsky. He understood that the Latin spirit and
the Slavic soul were irreconcilable. He felt that between the two should reign
an implacable hostility, coming from the depths of their particular essences.
No bridge could cross the gulf between Latinity and the Slavic soul. No
synthesis is possible, there are only defectors. It was as such that they treated
the Westernized Russian bourgeois; they were punished consequently. Thus,
if Europe goes on the march against Russia, the Pope, the incarnation of
Latinity, will have his place at the head of the European army. He can think
that the Catholic Church will triumph over the Slavic peoples. If Russia
collapses in the economic and political plan, the Orthodox Church will no

longer be able to maintain itself and its particular essence of Russian

religiosity will be extinguished. Basically, the Pope effectively envisions
acrusade. After so many centuries, the Russian people will finally be
converted to the Latin faith and spirit. From this point of view, the institution
of the diocese of Berlin takes an undetermined importance. This diocese
becomes an opening through which the Latin crusaders could embark on their
mission of conversion. But the way, which lead from Berlin to the heart of
Slavicism, passes through Poland. Consequentially, the Curia and under its
instructions also the Catholic Center Party preoccupy themselves more with
this country than the history of the German people.
Faced with this concentration of Latin Ultramontane troops, it is somewhat
important to know if Russia effectively envisions a de-Christianization or if it
only acts as a manifestation of the tendencies aspiring a de-Europeanization
of of the traditional Orthodox faith. It is comprehensible that Russia responds
to an apparently religious attack with a defense of the same order. The tension
between Europe and Russia, which is not a good omen, is reinforced by the
religious opposition. The forms of the war of religion, which seem
completely exceeded, are surrendered to the tastes of the day. A war of
religion with a global extent is promised.
We confusedly sense that the conflict that we find ourselves preparing for has
its ultimate motivations in the depths of the human existence. All the
economic, social, and political antagonisms are only symptoms. The essence
of Asia faces the essence of Europe to start the decisive battle. Bolshevism
was the martial organization that Asia was given where it faces Europe. By its
morbid horror of Bolshevism, Europe betrays its fear of the unfathomable,
mysterious, incalculable, enigmatic, and mortifying force of Asia.

The essentials of the wars of liberation of 1813-1814 were not limited to the
struggle between Berlin and Paris. The veritable adversary of Napoleon was
Tsar Alexander. The war with Prussia was only a part of the global contest
that played out betweenMoscow and Paris. Baron vom Stein, numerous
German officers, Arndt and other patriots began the annihilation of Napoleon
retreating from Russian territory. Prussia could only reconquer its liberty and
its independence by searching for support and cover from the much bigger
and stronger Russia. Since Russia was elevated to the rank of a grand power,
a mysterious link has been woven between the destinies of the Russian and
the German people. At the foundation of the Reich by Bismarck, the Russooccidental antagonism played a very important role. But by reason of this
antagonism, Bismarck equally benefited from the benevolent neutrality of
Russia in regards to the intentions of Prussia. When, in 1917, Russia couldnt
be convinced to perform a reversal resembling that of 1762, the German
debacle was set. As soon as Russia ceased to be a counterweight to Western
Europe, Germany, the country of the center, was lost.
But never before had this central position, in the geographic and cultural
sense, put the German people before a most difficult decision, a decision
heaviest with consequences, as that which they must make at the present, by
considering the rules of general accounts between Europe and Asia. Europe
attracts for a multitude of reasons. The German protests against Europe
should not immediately cease since the bases of European existence are
threatened? Should not Germany merge into Europe, if it is the sole means of
defending Europe against Asia? Those who consider Europe as a political
value above Germany must subscribe to it. They put it as their point of honor
to overcome the stage of the German statesman and elevate them
to Europeanstatesmen. But those who are so deeply German that they would

not abandon their country, even if that unswerving national fortitude should
cause the ruin of Europe and all of its values, would not hesitate for a
moment, when they will be brought to choose between Europe and Germany.
Seeing the misery of Germany, they will be unmoved by the suffering of
Europe or by sentiments of European solidarity.
Weve know it since 1918: at the moment where Germany breaks with Asia
and feels linked to the European community, it loses its autonomy, falling
under the dependence of France, and becomes an economic province of the
Western powers. The Europeanization of Germany signifies its extinction.
Since Locarno, Germany has consciously taken the road leading to its
extinction by Europeanization. At present, it prepares to go until the end and
sever its way of return. That is the signification of the Young Plan, of the
treaty with Poland, and of the preaching of the Crusade against Russia. This
sermon agitates the abyss of somber sentiments and uncontrolled passions.
Thus, the German government finally arrives to integrate even the partisans
of resistance and the national opposition into its front. If the Protestant
Church listens to the imprecations that the Pope proffers against Russia, they
will quickly become its vassal. By accommodating the watchword of the
Pope and by transmitting it, they show that they no longer have a
watchword of their own. Its self-determination is only fictional, as even the
self-determination of Germany is fictional. In the course of the crusade,
German Protestantism will become invariably Catholic. Since the appeal to
crusade was in itself an act of capitulation before European Latinity. The
religion of Pan-Europa is Catholicism. Not realizing it, it would be truly
necessary to be a Superintendent General, well anchored in Weimar
republican reality.

In a similar fashion, all the nationalist movement, allowed to lead by the

forces of the Weimar and Versailles regime to save European culture, will
naturally become the slave of the European politics of Weimar. The directors,
of Weimar, will slyly know to utilize the blade that the Stahlhelm offers
which such jolly European zeal to Archbishop Faulhaber. It is certain that
these good Europeans will save the Weimar Republic a second time, as
they had done before. Soon the directors will have discovered the secret of
the nationalist indocility of the Stahlhelm: it is only the growl of protest, in
noway menacing, of a heart of gold who would like to hide its fidelity to
constitution under the rude appearances of a rebel.
Those, in todays circumstances, who have some will to go on crusade
against the Russian mania, maybe without taking things into account, are the
arms that protect the order established by Versailles whose principal objective
is to keep Germany in impotence. This is the situation of Germany that its
destiny dictated: it can only reconquer its independence by standing against
Europe, it can only recover its liberty by favoring the Russo-Asiatic advance
towards Europe. It is Europe that strangles Germany. Being so close to death
by strangulation, Germany cannot demand the exclusive aid of the circle
restrained by civilized humanity. In its extreme distress, it is obligated to
accept any rescuer, even if it seems repellent by its Asiatic and barbarous
side. In this moment, Germany only has one thing: the encirclement of iron,
the stranglehold of Europe, it is already near smothered, it must be
releasedimmediately. Those who strike against Europe today give new
possibilities of life to Germany. The German people the 80 million people
on its part have enough weight to protect their deep essence against the
Asiatic spirit. So Russia can defend it against Europe, it must permit
Germany to live, in its own fashion, an anti-European life. If, in any event,

Germany wants to be Anti-European, it is already a great relief for Russia.

Because it is true, it is only in the measure where Germany begins to deEuropeanize itself that it will liberate itself. As it was once written by Baron
vom Stein: Germany cannot be maintained by the way of dilapidated and
rotten systems. Europe prays when it feels oppressed! The German voice in
the choir of European prayers is a blasphemy, an outrage. The German who
prays with Europe against Russia, implores heaven that his servitude will
never end.
