ETHICS ISSUE OUTLINE

How is your issue
impacting education
today?

School district test students every year and measure the success of
schools based on these test scores. Schools also collect data and progress
monitor students throughout the school year. Teacher and administrator
evaluations include value added data based on student test scores so
teacher morale is lower.

Why is this issue

controversial?

Students are being tested at a dramatically higher level which takes away
from the fun and meaning of learning. There is an over reliance on
testing and decreasing the amount of material covered in school to better
prepare students for test taking in reading, writing, and math. There is an
increased presence and influence of the federal government in public
education and that takes away from the state and local control. School
climate centered around performing well on the test.
