Video Reflection Paper
I taught 23 fourth grade students at Sam Davey Elementary School in Eau Claire, WI
during the 2015-16 school year. My classroom was a technology rich environment and we
enjoyed implementing new programs to assist our learning. I had to be somewhat creative with
what I would introduce to students during the final two weeks of school. Some of my students
were interested in creating a website earlier in the year to share Genius Hour projects. At that
time, I did not have experience with any website building software so website creation was not
included as a way to demonstrate their learning. As a result of learning about Weebly, I decided
to teach students how to create a website which would also be their end of the year memory
books. All of the students in my class were participating in this project. It was a daunting yet
exciting project as we were learning the technology together. In the future, students will have
experience creating websites to demonstrate their learning in other subject areas. Throughout this
project, students were growing their technological skills and working together to complete a task.
Using Schoology to assess students on website creation vocabulary words, I found that
students did not have a strong background in this area. Students studied the website creation
vocabulary words using Quizlet and they gained exposure and experience with the vocabulary
words through building their own website.
Each of my students created their own Weebly account to build their website. I guided
students in the beginning to have a common format to the website. Eventually, students were

able to personalize each of their pages. As a class, we decided on five pages beyond the home
page including all about me, favorites, memories, field trips, and things I learned. Our home
pages were all titled with fourth grade memories 2015-16 but then each student needed to write
his/her own personal title describing his/her fourth grade school year with a subtitle of examples.
Students were then free to work on the individual pages with pictures and examples of their
choice. I demonstrated using basic tools as well as pre-designed layouts. Shortly after starting, I
created my own fourth grade memory book website because students seemed to be struggling
with what to add.
Results from the website creation vocabulary pre-assessment on Schoology, showed that
students knew an average of 16% of the vocabulary words. It was definitely a struggle for
students with some difficult vocabulary words. Without the experience of building a website,
these words were brand new to students. There was minimal background knowledge for students
to use to comprehend these vocabulary words. Students were given a 17 question matching quiz
on Schoology with the following results.

1 out of 23 students scored between 75-100%

1 out of 23 students scored between 25-75%
21 out of 23 students scored between 0-25%

My hypothesis is that once students build their own website and practice the vocabulary words
on Quizlet, they will improve their performance on the website creation vocabulary quiz.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of these words by producing a completed website as
well as showing growth in their website creation vocabulary post-assessment.

My goal was that 100% of students could create a website using Weebly. In addition,
80% of students would show 10% growth on the website creation vocabulary post-assessment.
Our overall class average on the website creation vocabulary post-assessment will improve 25%.
The pre- and post-assessments were given on Schoology in the form of a matching quiz.
Students have completed assessments of all types on Schoology throughout the school year.
Quizlet was used during academic choice for students to study the vocabulary words. First, they
had to go through all of the flashcards and then they could play Scatter. Finally, we were able to
play Quizlet Live to work together to learn the vocabulary words. We have used Quizlet
throughout the year to learn vocabulary words. As a class, we used Quizlet Live for the first time
and students responded positively to it. They even asked to play during recess.
Before creating a website, I pulled students over in small groups to create a Weebly
account. Once each student had an account, I introduced Weebly by projecting my iPad using
Reflector. I modeled the steps whole group that the students would take to create a website. After
demonstrating one step, I would have the students complete that step before moving on. Once we
created two pages beyond the home page, students were free to work independently to add the
rest of the pages. I met with each student individually to make sure the correct pages were
included in the website.
Next, I modeled using pre-designed layouts to fill the pages within the website. I noticed
the students were not making much progress on the individual pages so I created my own
memory book website as an example. Once students could see an example of a finished project,
many of them cruised through the creation process. As the last day of school approached, I found
that some students only had one page partially complete. I realized they were still unsure of how
to use the pre-designed layouts. That led me to demonstrate how to insert a text box and picture.

I encouraged students to get one text box and one picture on each page. Students were given
work time to create their websites while I checked in with them individually. As students finished
their websites, they went around to help others that were struggling. Students were using 21st
century learning skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
throughout this entire project.
In conclusion, all students were successful in creating a website using Weebly for their
end of the year memory book. 78% of students improved their overall growth on the postassessment by 10% or more. As a class, students knew 49% of the website creation vocabulary
words according to the post-assessment given on Schoology. That was an overall 33% increase
for our class average. The post-assessment results for the website creation vocabulary words
included the following data.

6 out of 23 students scored between 75-100%

10 out of 23 students scored between 25-75%
7 out of 23 students scored between 0-25%
Next year, I plan to introduce Weebly earlier in the school year so students have the

opportunity to demonstrate their learning through website creation. I think the students would
have improved on the post-assessment even more if I had split the 17 website creation
vocabulary words into two groups rather than tackling them all at once. The students in my class
enjoyed using Quizlet this year but I often found they were playing Scatter by tapping as fast as
they could on the screen. For example, the top Scatter time on website creation vocabulary was 3
seconds by a student that scored 12% on the post-assessment. In the future, I will have more
requirements for students before they can play Scatter. With the positive student response, I look
forward to incorporating more of Quizlet Live into vocabulary study next year. While using

Weebly, many students were overwhelmed with the pre-set layouts. Next time, I will introduce
inserting a text box and a picture first. That seemed to be what most students could
independently do on the web pages. I could then give students the option of learning about the
pre-designed layouts if they felt ready for the challenge.
With this project just starting in the final two weeks of the school year, I was impressed
with the work ethic demonstrated by my class. This was something brand new for everyone at a
time when students are daydreaming about summer. Every student walked away from fourth
grade with a website that represented the school year. The websites varied from minimal details
to advanced design. Website creation is a skill they can continue to use in education to
demonstrate learning. Every time I implement technology on a grand scale, I am blown away by
what the students can do. Technology is their reality and website creation is now one of their
many technology tools to use in the future.
