1.1

Introduction

Network operators compete by offering new services (ATM, GSM) with improved
performance (low bit error rates, high availability) while delivering more economical
solutions based on flexible bandwidth capabilities. These trends have technical
consequences, including more expensive transmission techniques, higher data rates
and more complex network topologies. Synchronous networks based on
SDH/SONET technology are best suited to meeting these requirements, and are now
commonplace in transmission applications. However, these networks make great
demands of synchronization and thus the phase stability of clock and data signals. In
real life, various interfering factors prevent perfect synchronization. This is why it is so
important to verify synchronization during acceptance testing and during regular
monitoring of network elements.

1.2

Important terminology

Primary Reference Clock (PRC):

Frequency standard that provides a reference frequency for network synchronization
as defined by various standards (e.g. long-term stability of 10-11 as per ITU-T Rec.
G.811).
Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU):
This unit includes functions for selecting the reference frequency and for further
processing and distribution of this signal to the individual network elements. The SSU
provides an improvement in the clock quality after passing through a longer
synchronization chain.
Transit Node Clock (TNC); Local Node Clock (LNC):
These are different quality stages for SSUs. TNCs have better clock quality
compared to LNCs.
Synchronous Equipment Timing Source (SETS):
Represents the synchronous clock supply of an SDH Network Element. It selects the
reference frequency, generates and distributes a clock.
Global Positioning System (GPS):
A global navigation system using radio satellites. The satellites are equipped with
cesium and rubidium standard oscillators that are controlled from terrestrial stations.
The extremely accurate clock signal transmitted by the system can be used to
synchronize a Primary Reference Clock.

Synchronization

Siemens

1.3

Synchronization network architecture

A special synchronization network is set up to assure that all of the elements in the
communications network are synchronous. The network is hierarchically distributed.
A Primary Reference Clock (PRC) controls the secondary clocks for the network
nodes (SSU) and network elements (SEC). In contrast, only the exchange nodes are
synchronized in PDH networks. This type of synchronization signal distribution is also
referred to as master/slave synchronization. Under normal conditions, the reference
signal from the PRC will be passed on by the next synchronization element in the
chain. The outgoing clock signal is synchronized to the incoming signal to conform
with various standards A PRC generates the master clock for the entire network or a
sub network, and all clocks are traceable to the PRC.
To extend the network to more than three layers it is possible to introduce (k-1)
Layers of TNCs, with a kmax = 10. The maximum number of individual network
elements between the clock layers is limited to 20 with the restriction of maximum
total number of SDH network element clocks of 60.
A PRC is usually implemented with a cesium oscillator and is based on timing
standards such as LORAN C or GPS.

Clock derivation in network elements

Frequency synchronous network operation requires synchronization of all equipment

operating in the network to a central reference clock pulse. A network element can be
synchronized using different clock sources:

Clock input (T3) for an external clock source.

This is ideally a PRC or an SSU interconnected between clock output (T4) and
clock input (T3).

Synchronous signal inputs ("aggregate" in ADMs) with clock derivation from the
data signal.

Tributary data inputs.

Within SURPASS hiT 7070 network element, the SETS (Synchronous Equipment
Timing Source) function on the CLU module takes care of local synchronizing. In
SURPASS hiT 7050 the Synchronous Equipment Timing Source SETS is located on
the main board (MFP1).
The signals T1 (STM signals) and T3 (2048 kHz/2048 Kbit/s) feed the clock pulse
information into the SETS. One of these signals is used as the current synchronizing
source. The SETS function derives the clock pulse T0 from this. Each outgoing SDH
signal is synchronized from this T0 clock pulse and T0 is also used as the central
clock pulse within the network element. The SETS function does not only supply the
synchronous clock pulse to the modules within the network elements, but also via the
T4 interface to other equipment.
If the SETS cannot be synchronized with an external clock pulse source, it runs in the
free-running mode.
If all the incoming (higher quality) clock signals fail or are unsuitable for
synchronization, the affected unit switches to holdover mode. In this situation, an
attempt is made to maintain the last correctly received signal as precisely as
possible. To be able to do this, the frequency compensation values for the last hours
are stored along with the associated oscillator temperature. These data can be used
to control the oscillator, achieving a ten- to hundred-fold improvement in stability
compared with a free-running oscillator.
In both modes, holdover and free-running, the SETS independently supplies clock
pulse T0 from the Timing Generator SETG, but with reduced frequency and phase
quality. In this case, the external clock pulse, T4, is suppressed (Squelch Function).

Usage of timing markers

Timing markers or Synchronization status messages (SSM) offer one way to

designate a signal in terms of its clock quality. The S1 byte of the SDH overhead is
used for this purpose. Timing markers also play an important role in managing clock
distribution. When properly used, spare paths for clock distribution can be provided
during impairments to assure the clock quality within a network. Priority tables are
used to specify what clock the network elements should choose when multiple clocks
are available. To enable the network element to make a decision on clock selection, it
is informed via the S1 bytes of the (data) signals which clock is suitable for
synchronization purposes. To prevent clock loops in which two network elements
attempt to synchronize to one another, the timing marker "Don't Use for
Synchronization" is always inserted in the opposite direction of clock flow. If a
network element does not receive a usable clock signal from any of the possible
inputs, then it uses its own internal clock source (Holdover mode).

General clock settings

The window "Synchronous Equipment Clock" allows configuration of the timing

sources used for synchronization. Each timing source, except internal timing, can be
configured according to priorities. Internal timing always has the lowest priority.
Currently selected timing sources for the clock pulses T0 and T4 are displayed by
means of an arrow. The arrow also displays the mode.
The SETS selects from the configured timing sources, to which a priority was
allocated, the best clock pulse according to quality. For the same quality, the lower
value of the set priority is decisive
The operator determines which timing source is to be used. If the selected (forced)
timing source fails, a second arrow displays Selected in the Holdover field. The
Forced arrow remains on the timing source selected by the operator. If the timing
source becomes available again, the second arrow again disappears after expiry of
the Wait to Restore Time.
The switch from higher timing quality to lower timing quality is accepted immediately.
The switch back from lower timing quality to higher timing quality is only accepted
after expiry of the time set in the Wait to Restore Time field. This applies to the
modes Forced and Auto.

T3 configuration

The T3 mode, (2 MHz or 2 Mbit/s), has to be selected. This should have been done
during the commissioning stage.
WARNING
For SURPASS hiT 7050 FP1 Release 1 the T3 mode is fixed to 2 MHz.
If the T3 mode set to 2 MHz the quality of the T3 clock pulses need to be specified by
selecting a Timing Marker. This is necessary because T3 (e.g. from the normal
frequency equipment SSU 2001) as 2,048 MHz normal timing, does not contain its
own SSM. The Timing Marker, which has been set, is displayed as a HEX value.
If the T3 mode is 2 Mbit/s, then the T3 coming from 2 Mbit/s framed signal already
contains a quality level indication (SSM information). In this case SSMs are not
configurable.

SURPASS hiT 70xx SSU loop configuration

The SSU-loop can be enabled or disabled in the T3/T4 configuration window by the
network operator. By this the following behavior can be switched:

SSU-loop = OFF
The T3 and T4 ports can be used individually in either modes (clock or data).

SSU-loop = ON
(Both) T4 output ports and (both) T3 inputs are used for operation with an SSU.
The input of the SSU is either connected to T4-1, T4-2, or both. The output of the
SSU needs either to be connected to T3 1, T3-2, or both in parallel.
A requirement for having the SSU loop working as specified in ITU-T G.781 is, that
T3 and T4 clocks must be signals with the same type of mode (clock or data).

Data mode (i.e. 2 Mbit):

The SSM handling in the NE does not depend whether SSU-loop = ON or OFF.
The SSM of T4 and T3 are inserted and readable correctly also in case of using an
SSU. The used SSU must support SSM handling in the 2048 kbit/s mode.

Clock mode (i.e. 2 MHz):

This means, for SSU-loop = ON, all T3 and T4 clocks (i.e. T3-1/2 and T4-1/2) are
switched to the same mode (clock or data). Furthermore, in clock mode, the SSM
values for both T3-1 and T3-2 input clocks are automatically taken from the T4
output clocks.
Furthermore automatic DNU insertion in the traffic output port associated with the
traffic input port used as source for T4 will be done additionally for the following
cases:

Data mode (i.e. 2 Mbit):

(T1 synchronizes T4) AND (SSU-loop = ON) AND
(T3-1 or T3-2 synchronizes T0) AND (SSM-T4 = SSM-T3-(1/2)

Clock mode (i.e. 2 MHz):

(T1 synchronizes T4) AND (SSU-loop = ON) AND
(T3-1 or T3-2 synchronizes T0) AND (T4 is not squelched)
WARNING
To avoid a wrong DNU insertion in the SSU-loop case it is necessary, that both
T3 clocks are fed by the same SSU within this timing loop. If only one T3 clock
is used, the other T3 shall be left open. If this second T3 would also be fed into
the system, a false DNU insertion could be forced, although this T3 is not part
of the timing loop. This needs to be prevented.

Setting priorities

After the timing signals T1 are assigned and the external clocksT3 are configured,
priorities have to be assigned to them. Only those timing signals will be taken into
account for synchronization source that are ranked by priorities. In case two assigned
timing signals have the same quality (timing marker) the one with the higher priority
(lower number) will be chosen.

Function: Synchronization. Setting Priorities.

Step

Name of the Window

Used Menu or Command

"Synchronous
Equipment Clock"
Window

In the "T0 Prio" field select

(RMB) T1/T3 timing signal
symbol e.g. "T1(1)". From
open menu select desired
priority e.g. "Priority 3".

Confirm selection with "Apply"

button.

Remarks

TIP
A green hook or red cross symbol next to the T0 Prio field indicates the lockout state.
If a timing source is locked out (red cross), it is generally not available as a
synchronization reference. You can toggle the lockout state by clicking this lockout
symbol separately for each T1 and T3 timing source.

4. Select the "MS" tab in the opened STM-N Config" window.
The following elements associated to the synchronization can be configured or
verified here:

Received Timing Marker:

Contains the timing quality of the reference timing of a received STM signal.

Overwrite Received SSM:

Here the quality level of the SSM from the received STM-N can be overridden by
different clock source qualities before being passed to the SETS selection
process.

Force don't use for Sync:

By activating this checkbox, you can prevent that the other NE-Party uses this
signal as timing source.
