Project 2
Design of spur gear
Problem Statement:
Design a spur gear drive as a speed reducer for a compressor running at N1 RPM, driven by a
single cylinder engine of a P kW and N2 RPM. The available minimum centre distance is
Cmin mm. The pinion and gear to be made of different material.
Note: Solid modelling of spur gear to be done using SolidWorks

04 Design Steps
(i) Find the tangential load on gear/pinion

(ii) Find effective tangential load on gear /pinion due to dynamic loading
- This is the load expected to act on teeth before final design
(iii) Find the beam strength of gear or pinion (weaker one)
- Maximum permissible load on teeth
- Use Lewis Equation for initial design
(iv) Check with Buckingham load equation
(v) Check with wear load
(vi) Find all gear tooth proportion
(vii) Design the drive
- Rim , Shaft, Key, and Hub Pinion and Gear.
(viii) Power loss Calculation
