Latin rock
BACKGROUND

It rose in popularity in San Francisco, California in the USA in the 1960s and
1970s, then spread to other parts of the USA.

The Latin rock music became popular in the USA when artist Ritchie Valens
wrote the song La Bamba.

Latin rock music started to develop from the 1960s to the 1970s in Latin
American countries like Peru, Colombia, Argentina, and specially in Brazil were
an artistic movement called the Tropicalia which was the merge between
Brazilian music and African rhythms with rock and roll.

Latin rock music appeared in most parts of the USA and to other parts of the
world with the rise of the American Latin rock group Santana who released their
debut album whose combination of bluesy electric guitar, Latin percussion and
organ caught the imagination of national and international audiences, beginning
with their break-out performance at the 1969 Woodstock festival.

CHARACTERISTICS

Latin rock music originated from African-American rhythm and blues, some
traditional Latin music, and Caribbean folk and rock music.

Latin rock is the fusion of rock music, often Psychedelic rock, with Latin
American rhythms, especially Afro-Latin genre.

Latin rock puts an emphasis on percussion, making the style quite danceable
through psychedelic influences.

Latin rock can and was incorporated with different music genres like
incorporating it with Punk rock music which became prominent in the late 1970s
and early 1980s

In Latin rock, a wide range of musical instruments are being used like:

Guitars, usually electric or acoustic

Percussions, like drums which keeps the beats and rhythms

Vocals, most songs are accompanied with intense emotions

It also includes saxophones, organs, and many more

Latin rap
BACKGROUND

Latinos have been involved in the Hip Hop scene since its conception but it was
when they start to incorporate elements of their own identity when Latin rap was
born.

The Puerto Rican crew named The Mean Machine which were based in New York
were pioneers in rapping in Spanish in their single Disco Dream

West Coast Latin Hip Hop/Rap originated in the 1980s and 1990s which
included artists such as Mellow Man Ace and Johnny J. In which in their lyrics/
songs includes bragging and commentary about poverty and violence.

East Coast and Miami Latin Hip Hop/Rap emerged in the 1990s with artists
such as Latin artist Beatnuts and Chico XL in which their songs talked about
controversial topics.

It spread across the world through the rise of different Hispanic and Latino
groups such as in Europe, Mexico, and in Latin America.

CHARACTERISTICS

Latin Rap/Hip Hop music is mostly recorded by Latin American, Spanish, and
Portuguese origin.

It is more of a poetry rather than a song

It often talks about social issues such as gang violence, poverty, and other topics.

It is a way of expressing what you think and feel.

Latin Rap/Hip Hop often demonstrates the influence of percolating Latin


rhythms.

Percussion instruments are widely used to give the beat and rhythm of the song
and the incorporation of electronic music.

Latin Rap/ Hip Hop music has several subgenres such as Chicano Rap.
