How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work

For my production Im going to create a music idea for the song Black Beatles by
Rae Sremmurd. For my Music video I will primarily be using Lego. There will be
nothing but Lego. All of the scenes will be made purely out of Lego. The mini Lego
figures will be acting with human characteristics in order for the music video to be
realistic. The music video starts off with a mini Lego man turning up to a party where
there is his friends and a DJ (The DJ will be playing the song in the music video).
The mini Lego man walks into the party late and he opens the door to everyone as
still as a manikin. The DJ looks at him and he looks at the DJ, He starts to walk
about on looks at all the Legos, a first person view will come into place to make the
viewer feel like him and when the beat drop everyone will start dancing with the DJ
dancing and all the mini Legos in the party, During the song his mate falls over and
the main character gives him a hand up. They continue to dace on the dancefloor
with the party scene continuing with the flashing light inside the room. The setting will
have strobe lighting with a blue light over the DJ so he is constantly lit. The close ups
will include the Legos face moving to the side when he looks at the still Legos. This
will also have a separate head to show his facial expressions. To show the clubs
atmosphere I will have a long shot of the party so everything I can have more things
going on at the same time like the DJ discs moving and the lights and every Lego
man. I will also use another point of view shot of a Lego man still so you can see the
main character walking about wondering whats going on, Same reason for having a
point of view shot from the DJ.
How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

The main requirement for my brief is having a music video that lasts over a minute and is
smooth, to meet this I am having an even frame rate of 20fps. So the movement between
each frame needs to be subtle to make it smooth when played at a regular speed. To
make sure my music video is over a minute long I will need at least 1,200 pictures to make
sure I have that many pictures I will have a dope sheet.

My music video will face legal issues with the sound due to the song being copyrighted.
Im not going to making any money off it and I will be using it for a small college project.
My music video will be age restricted to 12, The music video will have no sexual activity or
swear once therefore it wont be an 18. However, it will be age restricted to 12 due to the
smoking and drinking references in the lyrics. The animation will only show dancing in a
party and is something that shouldnt be restricted to an 18.
The idea of a music video for the song created by lego has never been created before
therefore its not copied by anyone. The music video shouldnt face any plagiarism issues
based on the idea.

Why are you using that particular format?

The only techniques that I will be using is Stop framing Techniques and Using found
objects. I will be using stop framing (stop motion) in order to manipulate the images to make
the Lego men (found objects) move on their own. I will be using Lego in mu animation
because the models are durable and will look the same through making the animation and
the is very hard to achieve when using things like play dough. I feel I could build a creative
set with the mass amount of Lego I have and it will have bigger benefits which playdough
wont have.
What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
Using stop motion means I can create an illusion of strobe lighting. I could do this by having
on static light switched on that lights up the frame. Then the following frame to have that light
switched off. This will be 1/24 of a second long and when played back it should appear to be
flashing like a strobe. Being able to use any Lego object means I can make anything move,
therefore I will have a Lego to look like a record player. I will then experiment to how far I
should rotate the disc with a frame rate at 20fps.
What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
Problems that I will face will be if the lighting moves then I would have to do that frame
again, otherwise the strobe lighting will be lit in a different place for a fraction of a second.
When using Lego men, I need to have a consistent movement for how the legs walk.
Therefore, I need to work out how many frames one step would be and make sure it stays
consisted when anyone walks. In my music video i will have a Lego man fall over in order to
support the Lego in the frame I will use clear string that the camera wont see well.
Every time I take a picture I need to make sure I look back on the frame I previously took to
make sure everything matches up otherwise if I play back the video some part may not be
smooth and objects could jitter about.

For this video I learnt more on the
movement of the Lego figures. I
learnt how to make the Lego men
interact by simple gestures the

The subject of my music video is mike who turns up to the party late and the focus is him at
the party with the special guest, the DJ.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
Mike will turn up on is bike after being late due to his own business thats private to him.
When he turns up everyone freezes and he walks round wondering whats happening the at
the beat drop everyone starts dancing and other people buy him a drink at the bar.
At the party one of his mates fall over from dancing to the song and his mate helps him up.
The music fades out with dj turning the lights off
(The whole storyline is one of a night out partying)

I will have Mike who will be the main person in the music video, He is the one that turns up
late to the party and everyone else stands still when he comes in.
The DJ is called JJ, he is famous and is touring over the Uk and is currently at the venue
doing a gig with his gear.

What will they be made of?

They will be made out of Lego mini figure that are made out of plastic. The have plastic arm,
leg and hand joints with a head that can be changed. This means I can change facial
expressions of the characters.
The hands can move around in order to grip onto things like drinks and handles of a motor
bike.
The Legs can only be moved forward and back however its enough to manipulate to make
them walk. Bending both legs at the same time can make them bend over also ,so they act
like a hip joint also.
The arms can move forward and behind which can show the body language easily through
arm gestures. (pointing where to go, bouncer stopping someone at the door)
Movement of characters
How are you going to make your characters move?

The Lego men have joints in their arms legs and head and are able to keep up right on Lego
floors. When walking the joints may not be able to stand up right at certain points therefore I
a small amount of clear glue on the bottom of their feet.
The hands can move around in order to grip onto things like drinks and handles of a motor
bike.
The Legs can only be moved forward and back however its enough to manipulate to make

What is the purpose of an armature?

They are a metal skeleton for Plastacine to be wrapped round with. They contain all the
major joints to manipulate human movement in stop motion. The whole major purpose is it
supports the Model to make it stand up right without any strings attatched.
Will you use them for your characters?

No I wont be using it as I will be using Lego which also has joints built in. I can still get
similar movement with the Lego, the movement will be less complex

The Only Audio that I will have will be the Song for the music video Black Beatles

You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.
What actions will need sound effects?

Nothing because its a music video with its own audio.

Anything gory or any violence may be distasteful I want my music video to be as clean as

I have music that will suit the audiences tastes and the music video is set at a party which
will perfectly fit for 17- 20 year olds that go to parties often. Involving bike may interest my
teen audience further along with the DJ Set.

I will put my animation on YouTube with tags for a music video therefore if they type in a tag
I have put on my video it will hopefully show up on the page. I wont involve any exhibition

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.
To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).
For example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
