Lesson Objectives:

If you disregard classroom rules it has consequences

MENTAL SET
Estimated time: 5 mins
1. Students will get into groups of 3 or 4
2. Group Discussion: Students will talk to peers beside them, and talk about what rules are, and develop their
own definition. In their group, they will then jot down notes, and be asked to share a few ideas with the class.
Question: What if we lived in a world without rules?

STATED OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE:

Estimated time: 2 mins

The purpose of this activity is to interact with your peers, and create rules that can be enforced in the classroom
to create a positive classroom environment for everyone.
INPUT/ MODELLING/ DEMONSTRATION: Estimated Time 10 mins
INPUT:
- In groups, students will jot down a list of rules that should be applied in the classroom.
ROLES:
1. Grab materials
2. Write on chart paper
3. Will read the list of rules to the class
4. On Task Supervisor- Make sure the group is on task
After this, students will pick their top 3 rules and share these rules with the rest of the class.

Students have the option to draw or write the materials


Modeling
The teacher will create their own list of rules as examples for students to refer to.
Demonstration:
- One person from each group will then share their top 3 rules from their list with the class. The repeated rules
will be put in the finalized draft.

Estimated time: 13 mins

Independent practice:
10 decided upon rules are to be made into a cover page to fit into their binder. They
can colour and add pictures as necessary. This is designed to get them familiar with
the rules as well as having a hard copy with them so there is no question of them not
knowing that something was a rule.

CLOSURE : 5 mins
After the final draft, the students and teacher will read the list out loud, so students understand the rules that will
be applied in the classroom. Students can also brainstorm why these rules are so important to the class, and
student learning, conceptualizing why a class needs rules.
