INTRODUCTION

What is FANFARE?

Sample Logic and System Blue are proud to present FANFARE-a ground-breaking Kontakt Player virtual instrument pairing
the DCI World-Champion Blue Devils marching brass with the award-winning sound design of Sample Logic. From traditional
marching brass to full-blown cinematic soundscapes, FANFARE delivers the definitive marching brass library for educators
and arrangers, and an extraordinarily versatile and inspiring construction toolkit for film, TV, game composers, producers,
and electronic musicians. FANFARE features a broad array of samples recorded by Leslie Ann Jones on The Scoring Stage at
Skywalker Sound (Lucasfilm Ltd Company) and on the field at Ralph Wilson Stadium (home of the Buffalo Bills) by Grammy
Award winner Frank Dorritie. The indoor recordings were done at close, mid, and far microphone placements, while the
outdoor recordings were captured with state of the art stadium surround sound recording techniques. The resulting sonic
textures range from full stadium ambience to an in-your-face" 85-piece brass ensemble, with all of the recordings
capturing The Blue Devils signature sound of amazingly inventive chords, avant-garde clusters, swells, and organic brass
effects.

And it doesn't stop thereFANFARE not only boasts the finest traditional marching brass samples available, but
extends the librarys sonic reach via Sample Logics signature blurring the line between music and sound design
programming techniques. Starting with the traditional brass recordings, an entire library of morphed cinematic
multi-sampled instruments was created, putting not only world-class marching brass at your fingertips, but also an
inspiring array of melodics, pads, leads, stingers, impacts, transitions, atmospheres, and articulated rhythmsall

FANFARE IN DEPTH

Important features that will enhance your experience with FANFARE.

Most instruments feature a variety of key ranges and transpositions that are pitched relative to the chromatic
scale.

In most cases, samples have been mapped so their fundamental pitches are nearest to the middle C octave
range (C3). Sample ranges outside the recommended key map should be used at your own discretion.

Sample key ranges have been stretched (transposed) to maximize creative possibilities and sonic fidelity.
FANFARE has been pre-designed with custom MIDI CC mappings for easy user control using an external MIDI
controller/surface. See MIDI mapping.
For traditional instruments, Key Maps have been laid out using various optimizations based on Mics and
Instrument families. See FANFARE Traditional Instrument Overview.pdf

How FANFARE is organized

FANFARE is built around 2 main categories: MORPHED and TRADITIONAL.

Within each category is a unique set of sub-folders and sub-categories ordered by timbre/sound type or genre.
These contain a variety of instruments that are labeled by their general sound description. Instruments have been
categorized by genre, timbre, and the mood they evoke, but by no means should they be limited by title or
category. Our system is designed to better help you with organization and finding the sound you are looking for.
Please keep in mind that Instruments are labeled based on what our programmers felt appropriate. Some could fit
into multiple categories; therefore they are named in a way that suggests this. In these situations, the instruments
are placed into the genre that it most appropriately fits. For detailed information on the traditional instrument
keymaps and definitions, see FANFARE Traditional Instrument Overview.pdf

FANFARE also includes a MULTIS folder, which follows the same labeling system based on sound-type or genre.

FANFARE Manual 6

Instrument Categories

MULTIS Powerful presets templates combining various FANFARE instruments into all in one presets.

CONSTRUCTION BEDS Multis consisting of various instruments mapped out across the keymap as zones.
The various regions of the keyboard contain different sonic elements.

INSTRUMENT STACKS Multis that contain several instruments stacked on top of one another, sharing the
same keymap range. The intention of these multis is to be performed by playing multiple notes.

ONE NOTE GLORY Multis that contain several instruments stacked on top of one another, sharing the
same keymap range. The intention of these multis is to be performed by playing one note.

TRADITIONAL A collection of multis that contain only instruments from the Traditional Instruments
folder.

MIDI MAPPING
The FANFARE user interface has been pre-design to respond to the general control surface of the AKAI MPK88, but
is not limited to this MIDI controller. Kontakt allows for easy MIDI Mapping (MIDI Learn) using the Automation tab
located in the Kontakt browser. There you can assign and un-assign MIDI CC Mappings.
The factory default MIDI Mappings for FANFARE are as follows:

Mic Volume Faders CC 20, 21, 22
Mic Pan CC 3, 9, 14
Mic Solo CC 28, 29, 30
Master Volume Fader CC 27
Master Pan CC 29

Mod Wheel CC 1
Expression (Volume) CC 11

TIPS & TRICKS

FANFARE can be loaded into the full retail Kontakt 4.2.3 or higher, which is a separate application not
included, but may be purchased from Native Instruments. This provides you the ability to customize the
internal sample programming and effects. If you own Kontakt, you can load this library and experiment,
stretch, layer, alter loop lengths, and apply effects to each instrument. Slight alterations in instrument
programming may improve sample playback for your software and desired effect. Customized instruments
should be saved with a new unique name so the original is preserved.
There are many sonic possibilities buried deep within FANFARE waiting to be discovered, but if you are just
starting out or in a hurry, we suggest trying out the multis (multi-instrument presets) for a true taste of
FANFARE. We recommend that you explore the library. Be sure to audition every key and sample.

Save large templates of instruments as multis to expedite your workflow.
When sequencing effects in the user interface, try adjusting the Strength knob(s) to moderate maximum
effect ranges, especially when effects cause resonant peaks or pops in the audio.
Consider reducing the release time for instruments that are sequenced when you desire to play melodic or
fast changing musical lines. A shorter release will allow sequenced effects to retrigger from the start of their
pattern; otherwise they will latch onto the sequencers current location.

FANFARE Manual 23

TROUBLESHOOTING

If something doesn't seem to work correctly, there must be a logical reason for it. Native Instruments software is
tested on a variety of computers and configurations to ensure proper function. Having said that, there remain an
infinite number of possible setups and within them any number of compatibility issues, software conflicts,
hardware problems, and so on.

Performance issues: If your CPU becomes bogged down during playback causing audio popping, glitches, or
dropouts, try the following suggestions:

Try turning off any convolution reverbs that are ON.

Reduce the number of voices in each instrument on the instrument interface.

Purge unused samples for instruments.

Adjust the latency slider under Audio settings tab from Kontakts Options menu.

Set the Kontakt CPU overload protection to relaxed or medium etc., and/or set the appropriate
multiprocessor settings from the Engine settings tab under Kontakts Options menu.
If you have more than 2GB of RAM, experiment with the KMS Kontakt Memory Server settings from the
Memory tab under Kontakts Options menu.
