comes to your finances? Why cant you save? Why do you spend so much?
Why are you so fearful of anything financially related? Why do you give
so much that it truly hurts your bank account? Why are you so miserly?
It is in seeking to understand the why that you can change for the better.
This book will help you deeply examine your God-given money type.
Once you understand your type you can find financial peace.

The Seven Money Types is not a book on how to manage money. Rather,
it is a unique approach to understanding how you innately relate to
handling money. You will likely find yourself in one of these seven types.
It reveals the benefits and pitfalls of each type. A careful reading will help
you make the most of who you are and better understand others who are
wired differently. A fascinating concept.
Gary Chapman, PhD, author, The Five Love Languages

financial stewardship is undeniable! In his book The Seven Money Types,
he teaches financial wellness strategies, but more than that, he teaches
us how to understand the heart, or good intentions, behind our and our

The Seven Money Types does for finances what Gary Chapmans The Five
Love Languages does for personal relationships. If you want a greater sense of
clarity surrounding why you relate to money the way you do, look no further than this book. Not only will The Seven Money Types give you a greater
sense of self-understanding, it will also give you a deeper appreciation for the
unique way God has wired each one of us. Reading this book and realizing
I am a Jacob type has changed everything for me, financially speaking. I
encourage you to read this book. You wont be sorry you did.

the prevailing cultures attitudes toward what was defined as financial success. They were good with money.
Interestingly, most people seemed to think there is only
oneor maybe tworight way to handle money. But I believed
there were more right ways to relate with money, and that it had
everything to do with how God designed us. I began reading and
studying about this topic in earnest.
Eventually my theological studies required that I take a course
on Judaism, which transpired in Falls Village, Connecticut. There,
unaware he is one of todays leading Jewish thinkers, I met Rabbi
Arthur Kurzweil, and he became a dear friend and dialogue partner. Our hearts connected immediately, and within a few hours I
shared my belief that God designed humans in his image and that
the unique way each of us is designed in Gods image affects how
we handle money.
Rabbi Kurzweil listened and smiled. I didnt know whether his
smile meant he thought I was a complete heretic and that he was
about to destroy my theory or that I was in fact onto something.
When I shared with him my thesis that biblical characters such as
Abraham, Moses, and David served as money types who embody
and clarify certain aspects of what it means to be made in Gods
image, he leaned in and whispered, The characters youre looking
for, theyre already picked. They were selected long ago. Youre not
crazy. Now he had my full attention.
We talked late into the night. I learned not only that my intuitions and research were valid, but that for ages many people of
Jewish faith have held as part of their faith tradition that distinct
aspects of Gods image are revealed through seven biblical characters: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, and David.
These individuals are so prominent and memorable within the
9780310335443_7moneytypes_int.indd 20
1/11/17 3:25 PM
Scriptures because each of their lives represents something significant about what it means to be human, to be made in Gods image.
They represent what we aspire to attain.
Streams of the Jewish tradition affirm that, through their lives
and stories, each of these individuals leads us into a clearer understanding of one aspect of what it means to be made in Gods image.
At this intersection their tradition merged with and informed my
theory and experience in financial management and coaching.
The seven biblical characters who represent seven aspects of Gods
image are the seven money types, because, as youll soon discover,
Scripture teaches that to be made in Gods image is to properly
steward creation and its resources, including money.
As a Christian, some of my views surrounding these traditions
are certainly different from those of the Jewish tradition; nevertheless, I was able to discern areas of commonality and truth in this
Jewish construct that enlightened my approach to clarifying and
understanding the seven money types.
Over the following years, I studied the lives of these seven
characters, selecting and drawing upon principles that aligned with
my faith and experience in the Christian tradition. Viewing these
seven biblical characters through the lens of money types affirmed
my experience in pastoral ministry, financial coaching, and my
biblical studies: people relate to the world around them (including
how they relate to money) in seven primary ways, and these seven
ways are modeled by these seven figures. Individually, each of the
seven biblical figures inspires us to embrace the fullness of what it
means to be made in Gods image, especially in the ways we relate
to money. When held together, they compose a breathtaking and
inspiring picture of Gods imagea life with God weve always
dreamed of.

people into their future, which was really a restoration of the best
of their past, of what was lost in Eden.
Individually, each one highlights a unique aspect of what it
means to be God-imaged:
Abraham offers Gods hospitality.
Isaac demonstrates Gods discipline.
Jacob reflects Gods beauty.
Joseph depicts Gods connection.
Moses manifests Gods endurance.
Aaron embodies Gods humility.
David influences with Gods leadership.
While each of their lives demonstrated one aspect of Gods
image in a unique and clearly recognizable way, no single character
fully embodied all aspects of Gods image to the utmost degree.
They all provided glimpses; none fully represented the totality of
what it means to be made in Gods image.
If the fullness of each of the seven aspects of Gods image were
realized, wed behold the fullness of human potential. In both the
Christian and Jewish traditions, this is realized in the personhood
of the Messiah. Because none of us is perfect, each one of us is necessary to the human race to give us a clearer image of who God is
and what life with God can be like. The apostle Paul put it like this:
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many
parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one bodywhether Jews or
Gentiles, slave or freeand we were all given the one Spirit to
drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
Now if the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not

but by looking more intently at God, his Word, and how we are made
in his image informs the ways weand othersrelate to money.
Have you ever taken time to listen to your life, and to listen
to Gods voice in and through your life, to hear what he is saying
to you about the way you are God-imaged? God-wired? Could the
way you feel about and relate to money be part of Gods design, and
are you open to growing in your relationship to God and money
as you embrace and mature in this God-design? Are you open to
viewing money as a medium or tool through which you can give
expression to your deepest, most God-centered passions?
The goal of this book is not to give practical advice on what
to do with your money. You should seek a certified professional
for assistance with learning how to give, save, spend, and invest
your finances. Im not a certified financial planner (though Ive
worked with them); Im a student of the Scriptures with the heart
of a pastor who, like you, believes life makes more sense in light of
God and how he is revealed in the stories of Scripture. You will,
however, learn much more about how you are wired financially.
Hopefully, youll emerge with more questionsand some helpful
answerswhile growing closer in your relationship with God and
more at peace with your relationship to money.

CHAPTER 2
ABR AHAM
HOSPITALITY
I will bless you... and all peoples on earth will be
blessed through you.
Gen. 12:23
he old man sat at the entrance of his tent, the sun nearing
its crest, as the day grew hotter. He had watched a hundred
years tick by, yet these small hours were pregnant with potential.
Abraham had a promisea God-promise: I will bless [your wife
Sarah] and will surely give you a son by her (Gen. 17:16). But
God left after making that seemingly impossible promise, and so
Abraham sat at the entrance of his tent like all old men do, thinking of days gone by and hoping that enough time lay before him to
see his dreams realized.
Then he saw them; three men stood near enough to his tent for
him to discern they were Gods messengers, yet far enough away that
he desired to draw nearer to them. Standing, then running, the aged
37
9780310335443_7moneytypes_int.indd 37
1/11/17 3:25 PM
sage greeted the messengers, bowing low before them and saying, If
I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.
Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and
rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be
refreshed and then go on your way (Gen. 18:35). The men obliged.
Abraham raced into his tent, exclaiming to Sarah, Quick . . .
get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread
(Gen. 18:6). Then running to his herd, Abraham selected the most
prized calf for preparation and, when it was ready, he set it before his
visitors along with milk and curds, waiting on them as they reclined
under a tree and enjoyed the meal. One of the guests vocalized what
Abraham hoped to hear. I will surely return to you about this time
next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son (v. 10).
Notice how the writer narrated the scene: he ran to meet the
visitors; he hastened into the tent and called Sarah to act quickly;
he ran to the herd; he stood near them as they sat, all toward one
goalhe waited on the visitors.
Hospitality encapsulates Abrahams essence in a word, revealing one aspect of what it means to be made in Gods image. He is
a picture of fierce and over-the-top hospitality. The old man races
to and fro, perhaps moving at speeds he had not reached since his
youth. He understands hospitality, and he hopes for Gods promises. And because he does, Gods promise is confirmed and enacted
through a total stranger.4

front yard to avoid being home while girls giggled into all hours of
the night, watched The Princess Bride, and painted one anothers
toenailsa fate worse than death, in my mind.
I called Naomi and Rich.
Naomi! Hello, this is Pastor Tommy from church. You may
have seen in the bulletin on Sunday that were having simultaneous
events for the youth tonightthe girls with Elizabeth and the boys
with me. Well, the girls are coming over to our place tonight, and
I was wondering
I didnt get to finish my sales pitch. Naomi knew where I was
going and spared me the embarrassment of having to admit I had
planned poorly and wanted to crash on their couch.
Sure, dear. What time will you be arriving?
Sometime around 9:30 p.m.
Thats just perfect. Rich and I will be in bed by then, but you
just come on over. Ill leave the light on for you and a key under
the mat.
I pulled into their driveway around ten oclock. All youth group
events run late, every time. Their front yard was lit like the White
House. I parked my car on the paved runway in their front yard and
walked to the front door as small motion-detecting lights popped on
one by one with what seemed like every step. I saw a piece of paper
on a table beside the front door. Unfolding it, I admired the stationery, the crispness of the fold, and the weight of the paper. It stated,
Your room is ready for you. When you enter, take the hall to the
left, then turn right. Your room is straight ahead.
I stole down the hallway and recognized my room. A small
lamp splashed a graceful, golden hue upon the walls. Resting my
backpack on the floor, I noticed a bottle of water sitting inside
an ice bucket filled to the brim with fresh ice, and a cup that sat

beside the ice bucket. Another note, this time inside an envelope,
presented itself beside the water. Your restroom is down the hall
on the right. Breakfast will be ready at 8:00 a.m. Feel free to join
us whenever you desire.
In the restroom a hand towel rested beside a small scented
candle that flickered and was reflected in the mirror. Never before
had a restroom appeared beautiful to me. Everything was just right.
When morning followed a deep, restful sleep, I joined Naomi
and Rich in their breakfast nook. They were sitting at the table,
sharing cups of coffee, with scribbled notes on small pieces of paper
before them, all surrounding their Bible.
Rich smiled and offered me some breakfastorange juice or
milk, whole wheat bread or a bagel, eggs scrambled or over easy,
oatmeal or grits, bacon or ham? I sat down with Naomi while Rich
prepared my short order.
Then a small but energetic voice burst into the room, cracking
the serenity. Grandma! Grandpa! the boy cried. His mother followed behind him.
This is our grandson, said Naomi, and this is our daughter.
They stayed with us last night as well.
I wondered how many others had lodged at their home last
night. As I gathered my belongings to walk to my car and leave,
they invited me backanytime. I assured them I would return.
