Course Description: This course is a study of beginning
Japanese emphasizing reading, writing, speaking, and
listening comprehension. It also introduces students to
various aspects of Japanese culture.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course,
students will be able to:
1. recognize and begin to imitate Japanese pronunciation
2. comprehend basic Japanese at the introductory level
3. speak basic Japanese at the introductory level
4. write basic Japanese at the introductory level, specifically
the letters of Hiragana and Katakana
5. formulate arguments supporting the importance of second
language acquisition
6. describe elements of the Japanese culture

Workbook Assignments: During the semester, students


have to finish the first five units in the workbook. Every
assignment goes towards the final grade. The homework will
not be accepted after due dates. Due dates are:
Unit 1: Tuesday, Feb 14th
Unit 2: Thursday, Mar 2ed
Unit 3: Thursday, Mar 30th
Unit 4: Tuesday, Apr 18th
Unit 5: Tuesday, May 9th
Unit Exams: There will be two unit exams during this
semester. They are on March 28th and May 4th. Study guidelines
will be given two weeks before each exam.

Writing Tests: Hiragana and Katakana writing tests will be


given during the semester. The first one is on February 16th,
and the second one is on April 6th.
Vocabulary Quizzes: There are five vocabulary quizzes this
semester. Each quiz worthy 10 points. The quizzes dates are:
Unit 1: Tuesday, Feb 7th
Unit 2: Thursday, Feb 23rd
Unit 3: Thursday, Mar 23rd
Unit 4: Thursday, Apr 13rd
Unit 5: Thursday, Apr 27th
Cultural Presentation: Students choose one of the offered
topics and get into groups with the ones who choose the same
topic. Students do research on the topics as groups and give a
5-10 minutes presentation. The topics are: Tea Ceremony,
Kimono, Sumo, Japanese New Year, and Japanese food.
Final Presentation: Students will choose one of the provided
scenarios and work in groups with those who choose the same
one to create a skit. Three class sessions will be given for
preparation. The final presentation is on May 25 th, 9:30am-11:
30am.
Participation: Three unexcused absences will be dropped
automatically. Students who dont show up on the first and
second day of class will be dropped from the class. Students
are always responsible for dropping or withdrawing themselves
from the courses they are no longer attending.

will be notified of syllabus changes during a regularly
scheduled class.
Academic Integrity: This class will be conducted in
accordance with the College Student Code of Conduct and
Standards of Academic Honesty. Violations of standards of
academic honesty will be reported to the college disciplinary
office for appropriate action. Students who caught cheating will
be given a failing grade for the course.
Academic Accommodations: Students have the right to
request reasonable modifications to college requirements,
services, facilities or programs if a students documented
disability imposes an educational limitation or impedes access
to such requirements, services, facilities or programs.
CAS: The Center for Academic Success (CAS) provides
academic support services to Butte College students. It is
located inside the Learning Resource Center on main campus
and in CHC 230 and 231 at the Chico Center. CAS is open
Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00, and Friday
8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on main campus. Hours for CAS at the

Chico Center are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to


2:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Monday
evening, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Free services include
Tutoring, Computer Labs, Workshops, Group Study Rooms on
main campus, and TIP Sheets. Students may take a Critical
Skills for College Success 12-unit course through CAS. For

Support Services for Students: The office of Student
Services, Campus Center Building, 530-895-2239, provides
the following services: Center for Academic Success,
Language Labs, Testing, Counseling, Health Services,
