Probability
Definition-is the mathematical way people measure the likelihood that an event will
occur and is usually described as a ratio in fraction form
Example-A bag contains 3 red marbles and 4 blue marbles. The provability of
randomly choosing a red marble is 3/7.
Likelihood
Definition-the probable chances of occurrence of an event
Example-when the spinner is spun once, the number 2 has a chance of occurring
more number of times than the numbers 1, 3, and 4. So, the spinner landing on the
number 2 is most likely to occur.
Event
Definition-An outcome or set of outcomes of an experiment or situation
Example-When rolling a number cube, the event an odd number consists of the
outcome 1, 3, and 5.
Certain
Definition-There is a 100% percent chance that an event will take place
Example-If I roll a dice I will receive a number greater than zero.
Impossible
Definition-There is no chance that an event can happen
Example -It is impossible to roll the number 8 on a 1-6 dice.
Unlikely
Definition-When an event is not impossible but it has less than a 50% chance or
occurring.
Example-IT is unlikely that John will roll a number 1 on a 1-6 dice.
Equally Likely
Definition-There is 50% chance that an event will happen
Example-If I flip a coin there is a even chance for me to get either heads or tails.

Trail
Definition-Each repetition or observation of an experiment
Example-When rolling a number cube, each roll is one trail.
Sample Space
Definition-All possible outcomes of an experiment
Example-When rolling a number cube, the sample space is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Outcome
Definition-A possible result of a probability experiment
Example-When rolling a number cube, the possible outcomes are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and
6.
Frequency
Definition-The number of times the value appears in the data set
Example-In the data set 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, the data value 6 has a frequency of 2.
Experiment
Definition-IN probability, any activity based on chance, such as tossing a coin
Example-Tossing a coin 10 times and noting the number of heads.
Experimental Probability
Definition-The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of
trails, or times that the activity is performed.
Example-Kendra attempted 27 free throws and 16 of them. Her experimental
probability of making a free throw is

Complement
Definition-the set of all outcomes that are not the event
Example-When rolling a number cube, the complement of rolling e is rolling a 1, 2,
4, 5, and 6.
Theoretical Probability
Definition-The ratio of the number of ways an event can occur to the total number of
equally likely outcomes
Example-When rolling a number cube, the theoretical probability of rolling a 4 is 1/6.
Compound Event
Definition-An event made up of two or more simple events

Example-Rolling a 3 on a number cube and spinning a 2 on a spinner Is a compound

event.

Simple Event
Definition-AN event consisting of only one outcome
Example-In the experiment of rolling a number cube, the event consisting of the
outcome 3 is a simple event.
Counting Principal
Definition-a mathematical rule that allows you to find the number of ways that a
combination of events can occur
Example-I have 3 shirts and 4 pants. That means 3x4=12 different outfits.
Simulation
Definition-A model of an experiment, often one that would be too difficult or too
time-consuming to actually perform
ExampleRandom
Definition-A sample in which each individual object in the entire population has an
equal chance of being selected
Example MR. Henson choose a random sample of the class by writing each
students name on a slip of paper, mixing up the slips, and drawing five slips
without looking.
Tree Diagram
Definition-A branching diagram that shows all possible combinations or outcomes of
an event
ExampleSugar cone

chocolate
vanilla
Strawberry
Mint

Dependent
Definition-Events for which the outcome of one event affects the probability of the
second event
Example-A bag contains 3 red marbles and 2 blue marbles. Drawing a red marble
and the drawing a blue marble without replacing the first marble is an example of
dependent events.

Independent
Definition-An event that is not affected by previous events
Example-tossing a coin. Heads or tails is not affected by previous tosses.
