Internal Test I
Answer all the questions and dont mix-up Part-A with other answers.

Only non-programmable calculator is allowed

Part A
(Marks: 5 x 2 = 10)
1. Write the spheres of atmosphere in sequence and their ranges. Also write the Temperature,
Pressure and Density at the Tropopause level.
2. Write the relation of pressure and density with respect to altitude in the region of
stratosphere. Also write the Lapse Rate value in this region.
3. Draw the schematic design of velocity measuring device probe used in aircraft. Also write
the velocity relation with respect to pressure difference.
4. Classify different types of air-vehicles and give examples.
5. Write three components of airplane also mention their functions.

Part B (solve any two of the following four questions)

1. Define atmosphere. Explain the characteristic differences between Troposphere and
Stratosphere and define ISA.
2+4
Starting from the static pressure concept, derive the equations for pressure and density
against temperature in the region of troposphere.
10
2. Write various types of speed and define them. Write various types of errors which occur in
the speed measurement of an aircraft and give their reasons. Give relation between TAS and
EAS.
2+2+2
An aircraft is flying at 290 m/s TAS. Find its Mach number at sea level, 6 km, 8 km, 12km

10

and 16 km altitudes.

3. Write the basic mechanism of generation of drag on airplane and explain them. Explain the
effect of Reynolds number on these mechanisms of drag generation.
4+4
Explain the phenomenon of flow separation and explain how it increases the drag.

4. Write and explain drag polar? Write the reason of the generation of parasite drag and induced
drag?
3+3
Using momentum theory of finite wings, derive the induced drag with correct explanation of
theory.
10

Part C (solve one of the following two questions)

1. The air speed indicator of an airplane indicates a speed of 180 m/s. Calculates the true air
speed and the ground speed of the aircraft if the measurements made are at 10 km altitude
and a tail wind of 20 m/s is sensed there.
5
Calculate the error in the measurement if the airplane has following parameters:
Weight of the aircraft = 180,000 N, Wing area = 15 m2.and CL=1.0
3
2. An aircraft is flying at an altitude of 11 km. The speed of the aircraft is 120 m/s, wing area is
11 m2, weight is 80,000 N, drag polar is 0.02 + 0.045 CL2. Find the power input by the
engine of the aircraft when the efficiency of the engine is 97%.
