Advanced Fluid Mechanics
Spring 2017

Overview:

Lecture Time &

Location:

This course will continue where ME 5440 Intermediate Fluid Mechanics left off. The
differential equations of motion are reviewed and approaches for their simplification are
provided. Their application to many areas of fluid mechanics are then presented.

MWF, 9:00-9:50 PM, EN 2070

Makeup classes will be scheduled as necessary

Prerequisites: ME 5440 or equivalent or permission of the instructor.

Credit Hrs:

Optional:
Textbook:

Frank White, Viscous Flow

Ron Panton, Incompressible Flow
Kundu and Cohen, Fluid Mechanics
Kuethe and Chow, Foundation of Aerodynamics

Instructor:

Dr. J. W. Naughton, Engineering 1074, 766-6284, naughton@uwyo.edu

Office Hours:

Office Hours: M:1-2, W:1-2, Th:2-3

Internet
Content:

Materials for this class will be posted on the WyoCourses page. Logging on to
WyoCourses should allow you to see the web site for this class ME 5442-01. The materials
posted on the web will include assignments, class notes, class presentations (blank and
annotated) and any handouts. There may be a delay between when material is presented in
class and when the annotated notes are posted. You are encouraged to make use of these
notes to fill in areas you may have missed in lecture.

Assignments will be due approximately two weeks after the assignment date. These due
dates are firm, so plan ahead. The penalty is 10% for each day past the deadline (i.e. 3
days late and the highest score you could obtain would be 0.7 * 100% = 70%). Once the

solutions are posted (typically 1 week after the assignment has been handed in), no credit
will be given.
Assignments:

Although collaboration between students is expected, the assignments are expected to be

the work of each individual. Any sign of copied work will result in dividing the grade by the
number of copies found (i.e. 3 people found to be submitting the same work would each get
1/3 of the grade).
Many assignments will require computer solutions. Various languages are available for
your use, but MATLAB provides both programming and visualization capabilities and is
highly recommended.

Reading
Assignments:

No specific reading assignments are to be given. The texts listed may be used to clarify
concepts presented in class.

Exams:

One night-time midterm exam will be given in this course. This allows the student sufficient
time to complete the exam. A time will be agreed on that is convenient to all students. The
final may be part take-home. The in-class portion of the final will be taken during the
regularly scheduled exam time.

Paper
Reviews:

Two technical papers will be assigned during the semester. A review of each paper will be
provided by each student.

Attendance:

Attendance in class is the responsibility of the student. If class is missed, you are
responsible for obtaining the notes from another student or from the class notes posted on
the web. Because of the large amount of discussion that is not present in the notes,
students are highly encouraged to attend class.

Make-Up
Classes:

To accommodate a busy travel schedule, make-up classes will be scheduled.

Students with special requirements should be aware of the University Disability Support
Services website
(http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/udss/facultyandstaff/tipsforteaching.asp) .
Other:

Academic dishonesty is not tolerated. For specific information on prcedures and actions
that can be taken in such cases, see UW Regulation 6-802
(http://www.uwyo.edu/generalcounsel/_files/docs/uw-reg-6-802.pdf) .
