CE00313-3 Ubiquitous Computing

Final Submission Date: Friday of Week 16 of the module
Coursework Assignment
This assignment is to be completed in groups of 3 students.
All the members of the group must contribute for all work in the group section.
Workload matrix MUST be provided for all group component sections.
Marks will be allocated as given below.
Section One (40%) Individual Assignment
Each student will be assigned ONE of the following topic areas for research:

Topic Area 1 - Intelligence & Meaning In Ubiquitous Computing

Topic Area 2 - Agents & Ubiquitous Computing
Topic Area 3 - Security &/Or Ethics In Ubiquitous Computing

You will do preliminary research for one week on the topic area assigned to
you and submit a proposal for a suitable research paper title which should
include background reading, reason for selection of the title and approach
you will take to writing the research paper. You may also include a synopsis
or abstract of your proposed paper. Retain one copy for final submission.
(By week 3/4)

Once your paper proposal is approved, you will be given two weeks to do
research and write a fully referenced research paper of 2,000 to 2,500 words
suitable for submission to an academic journal. (By week 5/6)
Specific instruction for your submission are as follows: The paper should
be submitted in two sets, one set should be submitted in hard copy,
contain the topic area, specific title of your paper and the last 6 digits of
your MyKad or Passport number, and no other identifying sign such as
your name or id, to be used for peer evaluation. The other set should
contain the same information as above, but must contain your name and
submitted as an upload in soft copy form to the Turnitin system. Retain a
copy of your paper for inclusion in the final documentation submission.

You will be allocated a paper written by one of your peers, with only id
number as given above and given one week for you to review this based on
the research paper evaluation sheet as provided to you.
(By week 7/8)

Marks will be allocated as follows:

Section Two (60%) - Group Assignment

This section of the assignment is to be done in groups of 3 members who will be
assigned as a project team, each member having done a different research topic
area. Each project team will be allocated based on your topic area which has been
assigned to you for Section One above. Hence each team will have one member
each who has been allocated topic 1, 2 & 3 above.
The team will choose a scenario, which is to be approved by the lecturer, identify
various situations within that scenario where Ubiquitous Computing could be
applied. The team will analyse, evaluate the participants, tasks/activities and the
environment of these situations and identify problem areas or opportunities where
Ubiquitous Computing would be appropriate and feasible and propose suitable
solutions/implementations. The team should prepare a presentation of about 10
minutes that illustrates and demonstrates their concepts by way of producing and
demonstrating a prototype, simulation or by any other suitable means. The group
will also submit a properly researched and written report on this application.
Your work should include:
A 10 minute presentation of your chosen scenario that explores the theme of
how Ubiquitous Computing might be manifested in the current, or reasonably
near future (e.g. in 5 to 10 years ahead perhaps), and a demonstration of a
possible prototype or simulation. Please note you are being assessed on
your ideas about the entire ubiquitous environment and the application of the
concepts you have been exposed to in the lectures and your own research.
The submission is to include a hard copy report covering the following areas:
a) Overview of the groups scenario, issues arising from it and how ubiquitous
computing applications can be applied and implemented in this scenario.
(20 Marks Group)
b) Critical reflection of each team member of your research and work input into
the team project.
(10 Marks Individual)
c) Presentation, slides and screen shots of your presentation and prototype or
simulation etc.
(10 Marks - Group)
d) Presentation:
a) Concept & Execution
(20 marks - Group)
The final documentation for each group should be bound in a single document with
the following sections:
1. Group scenario documenting scenario issues discussed, ubiquitous
applications that you decide to apply with technical details, ethical/security
and any other human and implementation issue.
2. Copies of individual group members research paper proposal, actual
research paper and peer evaluation sheet.
3. Screen shots or images of prototype or simulation presented
4. Copies of slides used for the presentation
5. Any appendices or relevant additional material.
All documentation must include soft-copies in the form of an attached CD-ROM.

Marking Criteria
Grade point 13 15
Criteria (70%+)
Distinctive work will exhibit a high level of analysis and
outstanding cogency and clarity in communication and
reflection. The supporting report should be exceptionally wellsubstantiated in its analysis, reasoning, and conclusions within
each area.
In addition, at the advanced level the student will demonstrate
an exceptional ability to synthesise innovative perspectives of
the topic with work from other parts of the discipline.
Grade Point 10 12
Criteria (60 69%)
A student should be able to show further evidence of
knowledge, understanding and application of the module
material. The supporting report should be well written should
be supported throughout in its analysis, reasoning and
conclusions.
An advanced level will be indicated by the students reference
to, and integration of, material from previous programmes of
study.
Grade Point 7 9
Criteria (50 59%)
There should be satisfactory evidence of knowledge,
understanding and application of the module material in the
supporting report. Generally, the report will be less effective in
conveying meaning
Grade point 4 6
Criteria (40 49%)
There should be basic evidence of knowledge, understanding
and application of the module material in the supporting report.
Generally, the report will be less effective in conveying
meaning.
Work not meeting criteria set for grade points 4 to 15 is unlikely to result in a pass
mark.
