Remember in Prayer

There Is an I in Sin

BY

CALEB

Pride, arrogance, self-righteousness, and independence are all words that can be used to describe the
Pharisees. The Pharisees were this group of religious elitists who took pride in knowing the law. Often
times, their knowledge of the law was so great that they decided to make some additions or, in their eyes,
clarifications as to what God had already commanded. These Pharisees were reacting against the
religious compromise that was plaguing the Jewish people. They took pride in bringing back the old-time
religion, which was vanishing in the culture of the time.
People would look up to the Pharisees. These guys had it all together on the surface. They were known for
committing their lives to learning the Hebrew law, and tended to be upstanding, educated, and influential.
However, there was a major problem. The Pharisees, having their elitist attitude, loved legalism more than
God. They loved the idea of keeping the law and meriting their own salvation through works, so much so
that their relationship with God was almost non-existent. They claimed to be the most religious group, but
their views of themselves clouded what it meant to follow God.

James Jordan is now at home.

Margaret Morton is in NHC Lewisburg.

Frances Tindell is in St. Thomas West.

There was an I problem. Check out Luke 18:9ff, and what I want you to do is count how many times the
Pharisee, who enters the temple to pray says, I in his prayer. Four times the Pharisee uses the firstperson pronoun, four times in a 33-word prayer.

You see what I mean? The greatest danger in life is anything other than Jesus that becomes a foundation
for our confidence. Performance-based religion is the false foundation of choice for many people today.
Often times we pride ourselves, like the Pharisees, in what we have accomplished, in what we do for Jesus.
However, lets take a look at the tax collector.

The tax collector, who is across the room cries out, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. The Pharisee is
standing in the middle of the room drawing attention to how great he is, whereas this tax collector is doing
the opposite. He is standing at a distance and cries out that he is inadequate and broken.

NHC OAKWOOD

Phillips, Ethel Short

The only I found in the tax collectors prayer comes in the middle of the word sin. The Pharisee took
pride in telling God all that he had done, the tax collector humbled himself by telling God all that he
needed done.
Jesus says the only way up is down. Greatness is humility. For everyone who exalts himself will be
humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 18:14).

Caleb Taylor
