Bachelor Studies

1. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDIES

1. 1

Concept of studies

The first cycle of studies of Mechanical Engineering is adapted to the Bologna process and the
grading of the student in accordance to the European system of points transfer (ECTS), which lasts for
3 academic years (6 semesters, 180 ECTS study points) after which an academic degree is received
and a profession degree Baccalaureate Mechanical Engineer alongside the department of studies.
Studies at the Mechanical Engineering faculty in Sarajevo is comprised so that it fulfills three goals:

1. 2

Rational load on students regarding lectures (contact hours) and examinations,

Adapted towards the demands of the market
Equating the nominal and the actual duration of studies

General principles

The realization of the set goals is achieved by the following general principles:

1. Lectures are conceptualized in the sense that the student continually follows all its
elements (lectures, practice, seminars, laboratory practice, projects). It is desirable that
the student completes all the assignments linked to a specific subject during lectures
and immediately after the lectures.
2. The average number of subjects in the course of a semester is 6 with average weekly
contact hours amounting to 25 (lectures and practice). This sum of hours excludes
subjects such as Sports and English Language.
3. It is necessary to attempt to substitute the final examination partially or completely with
colloquiums, projects or seminars during the course of lectures.
4. The evaluation of the load on students is implemented by means of the ECTS system.
This means that all of the academic duties throughout a semester are valued with 30
ECTS

Bachelor Studies
5. ECTS credits are to be awarded in the full amount (after the completion of all
obligations related to a particular subject).

1. 3

Common studies programme

The first two years of the programme are common for all students of the University of Mechanical
Engineering. As a part of common basics, the students acquire thorough knowledge of fundamental
fields: mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials science, informatics, electrotechnics and others.
The goal of such a conformation of common studies is to provide the students with basic knowledge
which trains them to study on their own and master specific expert knowledge in any segment of the
profession, thereby keeping track of technical development and obtaining lifetime success in the
profession.
After the two common years, students decide upon a study within the department.

Bachelor Studies

2. STUDY DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS

2. 1.

Study structure

In order to cover a wide range of disciplines, the mechanical engineering studies are branched in
departments in which specific disciplines of particular specialties in the technical profession are
progressively introduced. The first study cycle trains students for teamwork and independent work in
the profession, but provides the necessary fundamental and expert knowledge for further studies.
After finishing the common basics (2 years), students may decide upon a study in the following
departments:
1. Department of Manufacturing Engineering
- Manufacturing engineering
2. Department of Industrial Engineering and Management
- Industrial Engineering and Management
3.

Department of Energetics, Process techniques and Environmental Engineering

- Energetics
- Process Engineering
- Heating, Ventilation and Cooling
- Environmental Engineering

4.

Department of Wood Technology

- Wood Technology

5.

Department of Motors and Vehicles

- Motors and Vehicles

6.
7.

Department of Defence Technologies

Defence Technologies

Department of Mechanical Constructions

- Mechanical Structures

Studies at third year are conceptualized in the way that the students are given the necessary scope of
professional education which by obtaining the Baccalaureate degree gives the basis for working in the
designated segment of profession. By selection of certain groups of subjects and electoral courses,
students are given the chance to fulfil their personal traits and interests. Electoral courses, which are
chosen in the 6th semester, broaden the scope of studies in a way that it is possible to choose subjects
which belong to other departments.
The elementary part of the lecturing process are organised and planned excursions during which
students visit manufacturing plants which are of interest for the chosen department. The first cycle of
studies is concluded with the fulfilment of all the obligations.

2. 2.

Brief Description of the Department

Bachelor Studies
Manufacturing Engineering
The capability of manufacturing is one of the most important characteristics of a society and is one of
the indicators of the level of development. Manufacturing Engineering is about manufacturing
technologies, also the supporting scopes such as: design of technological processes and systems, tool
construction and the construction of machines, automation ad robotisation of manufacture, the
preparations and the control of manufacturing etc. Lecturing material at 3 rd Year give the basic
knowledge and skills which are needed for the realisation of specific phases of designing
technological processes. In the scope of the department of Manufacturing Engineering, after the
Masters studies have been completed, it is possible to channel oneself into domains of manufacturing
technologies, mechatronics and machining systems.

Introduction to technological methods of shaping metal prefabricates, obtained by casting, forging,
cutting, joining and separating, unconventional fabricating processes, basic technological parameters.
Lecturing Programme
All of the mentioned processes are to be presented in the scope which will enable a brief summary of
basic terms and characteristics which will enable a better understanding of other subjects, and also
provide the basic knowledge which is necessary for departments of study in which technological
methods are not the primary scope of study. Casting should encase the basic concepts about the types
and procedures of casts. Deformation describes the basic concepts of fabrication of sheet metal,
profiles, wire, as well as cold drawing of wire and pressing. Joining and separating are based on the
elementary concepts of joint types, processes and equipment. Process of cutting is based on the
introduction to the basics of some machining processes (turning, milling, drilling, planing, shaping
etc.). Unconventional processes are a brief overview of the types of this kind of fabrication. Finally,
