3D Printing Contextual Studies

Title 1 - Does 3D Printing have the potential to replace standard

manufacturing methods?
Title 2 - The Capabilities, limitations, and potential of 3D Printing
2.5 - Exploring the Capabilities, Limitations, and Potential of 3D
Printing (W/ Subheading)
(Sub-H.) Does 3D Printing have the potential to replace standard manufacturing
methods?
- OR -

Could 3D Printing Replace mainstream manufacturing methods?

- OR - Is 3D Printing in the process of revolutionizing mainstream manufacturing

methods?
Notes 1:

Begin with talking about what the case study is going to talk about (3D
Printing, it's capabilities, limitations and potential)
Outline overall process (Design -> 3D Model -> Refinement for 3D Print)
The basis of 3D printing is as follows : (Explain how 3D printing works
briefly)
Go onto talking about the implications of the basis of 3D Printing (Quick
enough evolution of this kind of technology could revolutionize a wide
range of industries if affordable and efficient)
If the exponential growth curve lines up with the advancements made in 3D
Printing (Began 1983~) then we could potentially be nearing a point where
growth of 3D printing reaches its peak, could 3D printing evolve? What new
'Printing' or methods of creating 3D objects are up and coming? Explore
alternatives to 3D Printing/Manufacturing
Explain the design implications from 3D Printing

Notes 2:

Second section goes on to talk about the main uses of 3D Printing as of now
and how the areas are expanding.
Mention 3D Scanning and its benefit.
Go on to talk about the observable capabilities of 3D Printing, such as its
capability to replace several manufacturing methods all together. As shown
throughout recent years in some fields.
Talk about how 3D Printing is assisting the manufacturing process of
aerospace components by providing cheaper, quicker and more lightweight
products than previous methods. (EOS Aerospace) Provide evidence through
the 3 case studies** on its application to the production process.

*SLS = Selective laser sintering, FDM = Fused Deposition Modeling, SLA

= Stereolithography 3D Printing methods

Notes 3:

Go on to talk about the main, most basic limitations 3D printing currently has,
I.E not a casual consumer-friendly price, faster printers are much more
expensive, mention the multiple types of 3D printing (Liquid based printing
methods vs standard additive 3D Printing methods (SLS&FDM vs SLA)*
(Section on it in section 4~)

*SLS = Selective laser sintering, FDM = Fused Deposition Modeling, SLA

= Stereolithography 3D Printing methods
Questions:

Why is 3D Printing such a big talking point?

Why does 3D Printing exist?
What can 3D Printing achieve realistically?
What HAS 3D Printing achieved?
What are the capabilities of 3D printing? Saving time, saving labour,
saving money.
What are the main overall limitations that 3D Printing faces as a
process of mainstream manufacturing?

Notes from Sources:

3D Printing is already replacing a lot of business' standard manufacturing

process, being able to print 3D Objects with metal material allows for any
company that makes small parts to possibly shave off some time and cut
back on the costs of the creation things like automobiles, electronic devices,
gadgets, jewelry etc.
3D Printing is used in a variety of fields, such as: Food, Medicine,
Manufacturing and construction
In Food 3D Printers are used to create intricately designed food/sweets.
In Medicine 3D Printers are being tested in conjunction with human cells to
print biomaterial such as a human ear or nose, even as far as printing
replacement organs.
In Construction 3D Printers are being used to build houses for a fraction of
the standard production time and cost.
Since 2010 Additive Manufacturing Technologies joined together as a group to
create a standard 7 categories that each type of 3D printing resides under.
"it has also made a significant impact on industrial applications, whereby
applications are being developed to materialize complex components that
are proving to be both lighter and stronger than their predecessors. Notable
uses are emerging in the aerospace sector where these issues are of primary
importance." -.3
