Function: Protect the cell from

its surroundings

Cell Plasma/Membrane

Analogy: The cell membrane

is like a fence, its made to
keep everything bad out, but
lets in the things it needs.

Function: Produces energy.

Mitochondria

Analogy: Nuclear power plant

because they create energy
just like mitochondria does for
the cell.

Function: Isolate materials that

might be harmful to the cell.

Vacuole

Analogy: A lunch box. It holds

food, water, and you put the
wrappers (waste) back into it
when you are done.

Function: Store the plant's

DNA and control the activity of
the cell through protein
synthesis.

Nucleus

Analogy: The brain because

like the nucleus is the control
center of a cell, it is the control
center of the body.

Function: Ribosomes are a

cell structure that makes
protein in the cell.

Ribosome

Analogy: Ribosomes are like

chefs; they take the
ingredients and put them
together in a complex finished
product.

Terry Dickson

Function: Maintains the shape of

plant cells, supports and
strengthens plants, resists water
pressure, controls cell growth,
regulates metabolic processes for
the plant, acts as a physical
barrier for the plant, stores
carbohydrates and helps with cell
to cell signaling. Surrounds the
cell membrane.

Cell Wall

Analogy: Wall surrounding a

castle, protecting the structure
from harm and only allowing
entrance by outsiders through
specified gates and openings.

Function: Get rid of all the

waste in a cell.

Lysosome

Analogy: Garbage disposal

because like lysosomes it gets
rid of all of our waste.

Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: Creates and folds
proteins and then carries
these synthesized substances
to the Golgi apparatus.
Analogy: A manufacturing
plant, where proteins and
lipids are made. This is also
where things are packaged
into boxes and sent off to
different places. Just like the
endoplasmic Reticulum
creates proteins and carries
them.

Terry Dickson

Function: Convert sunlight,

water and carbon dioxide into
food for the plant.

Chloroplast

Analogy: A solar panel. Solar

panels convert sunlight into
energy, just like Chloroplast
do.

Terry Dickson

Function: Provides mechanical

support to the internal
structures.

Cytoplasm

Analogy: Fruit jello cup, the

jello is the cytoplasm, and the
fruit is everything inside the
cell that the cytoplasm holds
the cell in its place.
