IQ helps in understanding the basic mechanism and also the importance of it in life and also
in evaluating the success level.

But once you are in that field, Emotional Intelligence emerges as a much stronger predictor
of who will be most successful, because it is how we handle ourselves in our relationships
that determines how well we do once we are in a given job.
Daniel Goleman
Introduction:
Emotional Quotient has become more popular in the world ever since the publication of
Daniel Golemans first book in 1995 and given that the concept is a psychological one. EQ
has become a hottest buzz word in the present world attracting more number of readers.
Initially, when researchers started to write, it was focused only on the cognitive aspects i.e.
memory and problem solving skills. However, the non-cognitive aspects were also considered
by few researchers. Nowadays, EQ and IQ play an important role in becoming a successful
person.
In present scenario, the recruiters are likely to make better decisions in recruiting people who
already possess high EQ scores. The ability to manage feelings and handle stress is another
facet of emotional intelligence that has been found to be important for success. Workers with
high EQ will be better to work in teams, adjust to changes and can be flexible.
Comparative study between Emotional quotient and Intelligence quotient is important in
order to understand the basic mechanism that is involved between EQ and IQ.
Implementation of EQ along with IQ at workplace is very much critical in the present
generation as it is not just technical and analytical abilities (IQ) makes one successful in life,
it requires a combination of EQ and IQ.

IQ is the measure of general intelligence and cognitive abilities learning ability, situational
dealings, mental acuteness; logic and analytical skills that help in predicting the intellectual
development. With this IQ, Individuals were able to solve their technical problems easily
whereas failed in developing emotional intelligence to solve social problems.

Nowadays, organizations started focusing on the insufficiency of the employees emotional

intelligence. This initiation can be done through improving the employees skills relating to to
customers management, negotiation, handling conflict and communication that will certainly
add value to the organizations.
Improvement of service quality and customers relationship is very crucial. The vital role of
interaction in service industry has gained a lot of responsiveness in recent years. Hence, in
order to understand different emotions and abilities, the concept of emotional intelligence is
explored and handled to prosper.
The concept of emotional intelligence brings new depth in understanding human intelligence;
it expands the ability to evaluate ones general or overall intelligence. Researches on
emotional intelligence have proved that emotional intelligence is more crucial in determining
outcomes of individual as compared to IQ. It has also revealed that people with strong
academics and high IQ, are socially ineffective and incapable. EI components are useful in
assisting employees with decision-making in areas like teamwork, inclusion, productivity and
communication.
Need of the Study:
Individual Emotions vary according to the time frame and responses. It is important to know
the benefits of EQ & IQ. They help in exploring the leadership qualities and also help in
predicting the success levels of an individual.

This study helps in understanding the importance of EQ along with IQ at workplace. It also
helps in understanding the varying emotions of the people and impact on their leadership
quality in the various situations which in turn helps to improve their success levels.
Objectives of the Study:

To study the awareness level and importance of EQ along with IQ in the respondents.

To understand respondents attitude towards the implementation of EQ along with IQ.

To evaluate the present level of EQ among the respondents.

Research Methodology:
This study is a descriptive research adopting random sampling technique. Hundred
questionnaires are issued to different respondents representing different age groups, gender.
The data includes primary and secondary data collected from various sources and the tools
used for analysis are the Likerts score and percentages.
Review of Literature:
Goleman (1995), EI assist the employees in enhancing their performance by enabling them to
understand and manage their emotions, allowing them to cope up efficiently with stress, work
well under pressure and prepare for organizational change. Opposed that emotional
intelligence which is equivalent, if not more significant to Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a
crucial measure of success in persons life; both at work and personal life. Moreover
indicating that, an individuals emotional intelligence can affect ones work situation.
Bagshaw (2000), Emotional intelligence can have a positive contribution in business
development; increase team performance, customer and employee satisfaction. Emotions if
properly managed can lead towards more employee productivity, loyalty, productivity gains,
innovations, goal achievements at personal, team and organizational level. Diggins (2004),
proposed that best managers must have Emotional Intelligence (EI), so that they can make
decisions based on self-management and relationship skills and are aware of how their
activities influences others in the organization. Hence, emotional intelligence is a major
contributor in the attainment of organizations success and leaders. EI is fundamental to
effective performance and to continue performing better than those around you during
organizational change. HUSAIN (2013), Emotional Intelligence may indeed be a key
determinant of employees effective performance and it is measured more important than

Intelligence quotient at workplace. Mostly intelligent people who have a bright academic
record are not good in social interaction and interpersonal dealings. This deficit is due to the
lack of emotional intelligence capability, though there intelligence quotient is quite high. It
does not indicate that IQ should be entirely ignored yet it indicates that EI is more important
paradigm than IQ for improving organizational effectiveness. Owoseni (2014), the findings of
this study showed that EI has a statistical important relationship on superficial leadership
effectiveness and outcomes. Emotional intelligence has been found important because it
provides an excellent structure to look at how people understand and manage emotions.
Emotional intelligence considers how people interact in a way cognitive ability theories
cannot fully account for.

Interpretation & Conclusion:

Execution of EQ along with IQ is very much essential in the present world because is not just
the requirement of technical and analytical abilities (IQ) that makes one successful and to be
successful in life, it also needs a combination of EQ and IQ.
According to this study, out of 100 respondents, all the respondents comparatively understand
the concept of EQ and IQ on an average and fair scale. Most of the respondents i.e. 82% of
the respondents are emotionally aware and sensitive towards work and agree to the fact that
they can express themselves in the right way to the right person at the right time. 82% of the
respondents are flexible and creative when facing a problem and can maintain their calmness
and guide others, when they are disappointed with others at workplace.

Even though most of the respondents i.e. 75% of the respondents think that their emotions
can control their performance at workplace, they even agree that emotions and intelligence
together helps in developing attributes and behaviour. 93% of the respondents think that by
improving both EQ and IQ, an individual can transform into a successful person and an
effective leader. Majority of the respondents strongly agree that EQ+IQ=success in life. 93%
of the respondents think that EQ along with IQ improves overall effectiveness of an
individual.
The emotional competency of a person has a exciting contribution in the success of an
employee. Human beings are emotional beings and this must be the first step towards
understanding of emotions. It can be concluded that emotional intelligence is critical at
workplace than intelligence quotient. It is obvious that emotional intelligence is a better
predictor of success than conventional measures of IQ tests. Hence, emotional intelligence
is a major contributor in the accomplishment of organizations success and leaders.
