Walker Process Equipment IN-LINE INSTOMIX ‘Standard: 6021-1-1 Division of MeNish Corporation MECHANICAL SERIES Page 1of2 SELECTION STANDARD van 73 591-34 D Rev. FEB. 76 0.1 Introduction: This standard is intended to provide ‘a uniform guide for selection and design of the In-Line Mechanical Series InstoMix, including appropriate accessory items. 1.0. INSTOMIX SELECTION “The motorized, mechanical series InstoMix is designed to instantaneously (milliseconds) disperse dilute coagulant and flocculent solutions into raw water flow. TThe coagulant and flooculent chemicals include such ‘compounds as aluminum sulfate (alum), sodium aluminate, ferrous and ferric sulfate, and polymer (or polyelectrolyte) solutions. The high energy blending regime is ideal for the dispersion of dilute solutions, however, it is not recommended for dispersion of viscous solutions or sluries. The InstoMix should not be applied Indiscriminately for dispersion of polymers. If there is any question, AL WAYS check with the supplier, as there are some polymers that are fragile, and when subjected to a high energy mixing regime, ‘will be damaged to the point where they are ineffective. The mechanical InstoMix is not suited to blending lime slurry as severe plating of intemals can ‘occur, In general, other additives can be effectively fed immediately downstream of the mechanical InstoMix, taking advantage of the exit turbulence for dispersion. In some cases, a downstream rapid mix chamber, equipped with 2 Turbulator, is required to complete the blending of additives injected downstream of the InstoMix, The Mechanical Series InstoMix is availabe in eight sizes. Refer to Planograph 2-230 for dimensions and configurations of the various sizes. Note that sizes 1 thra 5 feature one mechanical mixer per unit, whereas sizes 6 thru 8 feature two mixers per unit. Given the flow in MGD, the unit size ean be selected from Fig.1.0. Selection is based on flow velocity through the nominal diameter, which should be within the range 4-8 fps. Actual velocity is scaled on the left hand side of the chart. Headioss is approximated on the seale atthe right hand side of the figure. The unit is ‘designed to assure that head loss will not exceed 30° W C., Within its application range. Table 1.0 is a take-off from Fig. 1.0, showing the flow ranges which are applicable to cach size unit ‘Table 1.0 APPLICABLE FLOW RANGES. A pumped solution feed is preferred, as this much simplifies the InstoMix System design, The pump should be rated in excess of 30 psi (most chemical feed pumps do exceed 30 psi). For gravity solution feed, available static head MUST be 6° [0" above the water level in the downstream vessel into ‘which the pipe line discharges. oy ey 's i $3 ao a g $ 2 : 3 3 8 i orate Flow MGD Fig. 1.0 INSTOMIX SELECTION GUIDE : Walker Process Equipment IN-LINE INSTOMIX Standard: 6021-1 Division of McNish Corporation © MECHANICAL SERIES Page 20f2 SELECTION STANDARD JAN. 73 591-3-4 D REV. FEB. 76 2. Auxiliary chemical fed -In some flow schemes it will be advantangeous to feed secondary additives into the raw water pipeline immediately downstream ftom the Inline InstoMix installation, AA simple pipe line injector (NOT BY WALKER PROCESS) is recommended for secondary chemical feed. This car] be purchased from the chemical feed supplier, who will furnish a gland and valve such thatthe injector line can be removed with the raw waterline in service or, fixed arrangement can be made up of simple pipe fittings. The injector pipe should extend to the flow centerline, and have a 45° cut end, facing downstream, 3.0 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS ‘The Mechanical Series InstoMix body is fabricated of carbon steel, with the wall thickness corresponding to Schedule 40 pipe for sizes 1 and 2, and 3/8" wall for sizes 3-8. End flanges will conform to AWWA Specifications C-207. ‘The combination flow contraction sectioning baffle assembly is fabricated into the inlet end of the InstoMix body. A steel ring contracts the cross- sectional area by 20%, aiding in flow distribution among the chemical release sections. The section vanes spoil flow rotation, and provide individual, separated streams into which chemical solution is injected, at the same time bafiling and confining the central, ultra-high intensity blending compartment. Each mechanical mixer is direct-connected, flange ‘mounted, and is easily removable for servicing. Dual ‘opposed impellers and shaft are all of Type 316 stainless steel A self-contained, chemical proportioning manifold system is provided with each InstoMix unit. Each system is designed for dividing the metered solution flow from the feeder into multiple, equally ‘proportioned streams tothe centroids of the chemical release sections. All parts ofthe chemical proportioning manifold system are fabricated of Type 316 stainless steel. For gravity-flow chemical feed schemes in particular, a metering device should be installed in the chemical feed line, upstream from the InstoMix. The metering, device is not furnished by Walker Process. ‘The interior surfaces of the InstoMix are shop coated “with two coats of Temes 272 Topox (coal-tar epoxy suitable for contact with potable water) ata thickness 06.7 mills dry film thickness per coat, ater sandblasting in accordance with SSPC SP-10 specifications. Exterior surfaces may be shop primed to conform with the contract specifications, but all finish oats are t be applied by the General Contractor. 4.0 APPLICATION ON INDUSTRIAL WASTES. ‘The Mochancial Series In-Line InstoMix may be used for industrial waste treatment application, such as feeding alum into an oil emulsion mixture; however, extreme care must be taken in these types of applications due to the possibility of foreign matter “which may be inherent to the waste stream. Because of the intemal mixers, chemical injection piping, and sectioning baffles, the following limitations must be considered for this type of application: 1 Allrags, stringy material, ropes, and other debris of thisnature must be removed ahead of the Instoix, 2 All metallic debris such as chips, shavings, turnings and other items of this nature must be removed ahead of the InstoMix 3. Investigations toward applications ofthis nature ‘must determine whether or not there will be adverse pH conditions in the waste stream. For example, wastes which are highly acid or highly alkaline shouid not be applied. 4 Be absolutely certain that there are no volatile material is in the waste stream which, when released in the intense agitation inthe area of the ‘mixers, could possibly result in hazardous conditions. ‘As with all industrial waste streams, all other pertinent facts should be considered to make sure that the application will not result in a hazardous condition and/or in a condition under which the machine cannot operate. Each appl considered on its own merits. Unless we are involved in the investigative work selecting the process, Walker Process will take no responsibility as to the efficiency ‘of the InstoMix unit. In no way is it to be inferred that the InstoMix is applicable on all types of industrial ‘waste streams, even ifthe above conditions are met. Careful Investigation ofall industrial waste treatment applications is imperative. etectve Unit Size Volume Qty. of Nameplate HPw Each TOTAL Impeller Inches FT Mixers: HP Unit HP, Model Speed Dia.
