Global Economics
and Finance
Introduction
Hong Kong has emerged as a major financial hub of the
world. There is growing demand for professionals with deep
knowledge of global economic and financial activities.
The Interdisciplinary Major Programme in Global Economics
and Finance (GLEF) strives to provide future professionals with
solid interdisciplinary training in economics and finance in the
context of the global economy, and to cater for societal needs
by preparing graduates having strong analytical training and
global mindset to meet future challenges of the banking and
finance industry, as well as the appreciation of the virtues of
integrity, honesty and sense of responsibility.

Expected Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Programme, students are expected to
have the knowledge in:
The complex interrelationships among the world economies
in terms of the flow of goods, services, and funds.
The functions and operations of financial markets and
institutions, and the interaction among them in a globalised
context.
The use of econometric and mathematical modelling tools
in analysing economic and financial issues.
The wide range of financial instruments in the globalised
economies with regard to their design, properties, and
pricing.

Programme Highlights
The new Programme will cover the topics below, which
are not covered by a conventional economics or finance
programme:
Monetary systems around the world and their interrelationships, different exchange rate regimes, exchange
rate dynamics, IMF (International Monetary Fund), ADB
(Asian Development Bank) and the Ching Mai Initiative.
Economic integration on a global and regional scale, WTO
(World Trade Organization), Eurozone, ASEAN (Association
of Southeast Asian Nations), CAFTA (China-ASEAN Free Trade
Agreement), APEC (Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation,
and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).

The emergence of China and its impact on the international


economic and financial order.
Operations and interconnections of financial markets
around the world.
Asset bubbles, financial crises and contagion.
Regulation of financial markets and institutions, Basel
accords, regulation of insurance companies, hedge funds,
and pension funds.
Corporate social responsibility and sustainability of financial
institutions in a global context.

Admission Requirement
The first cohort will start in 2012/3 and the Programme
will receive applications in 2011. The minimum entrance
requirement for applicants with HKDSE results is as follows
