Lesson Plan and Reflection Form

Candidate: Becca Frick
Grade Level: First

Date: November 23, 2016

Subject: Language Arts

Wizard of Oz Unit, Lesson 3 of 3

Number of Students 22

1 Core Standard/Content Standard:

RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an
opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
2 Learning Objective/s:
Students achieving below grade level expectations will participate in most retelling acting exercises with teacher
assistance and reassurance.
Students achieving at grade level expectations will participate in all retelling acting exercises independently.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will take on a leadership role in one retelling acting exercise.
3 Assessment/Monitoring Learning:

Type of Assessment (describe):

Informal observation will be used to assess this lesson. Observation will occur during the retelling exercise and
notes will be recorded after the lesson. A rating scale will be used to document their understanding and completion
of their opinion sentence. Students will turn in their opinion writings to be looked at by the teacher after the
lesson.
Monitoring of Progress: (describe)
Monitoring of progress will occur during review of previous learning, the retelling exercise and during the closure
activity.
*List any special accommodations or modifications in the learning plan required by student needs.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will be challenged with additional questioning throughout the
retelling exercise that will stretch their thinking. They will also be asked to write two to three sentences for their
opinion writing. Students achieving below grade level expectations will be given more teacher assistance during
the writing portion of the lesson.

Why have you chosen this approach for assessment?

I have chosen this approach for assessment because observation is an appropriate way to asses a
large group, teacher led activity. A rating scale will be used for their closure opinion pieces
because this is the first time they are doing this type of writing.

4 Central Focus
Students will continue identifying the story elements
including, setting, character, plot and details through the
story, The Wizard of Oz.

Strategies/Methods: (describe steps in instruction)

5
Students will listen to the remainder of the story, The Wizard of Oz.
6
Students will act out the main events of the story, tornado, munchkin land, Scarecrow, Tine Man, Lion
and the witch melting while prompting the students for what character we meet next in the story.
7
Students will place characters on the magnet board as we act our way through the story.

Why have you chosen these strategies/methods?

I have chosen these strategies in order to engage the kinesthetic learners in my class and make for
a memorable lesson experience. Physically retelling the story is an effective way to engage the
students on multiple levels.

Closure/Conclusion:
Students will write one sentence giving an opinion on whether they liked the story or not.

Central Focus:
The central focus was met as today the focus was on retelling the main events of the story. In order to do this, we used
the characters and setting as well. This was a great way to tie in all of the story elements on the third day of the unit and
allowed us to summarize and tell the lesson of the story.
Learning Experience Plan:
The process of reading the story and retelling went very smoothly. Because the final portion of the story was a bit
longer today, I did not get to the opinion piece of the lesson. Next time doing this I will extend the unit to five days in
order to break up the story more and add in more elements of the movie for comparing and contrasting.
Supporting Learning Plan:
The grouping for todays lesson was successful and gave a nice variety from the last two lessons. The materials were
successful especially the magnet characters because they gave visual learners a point of reference in the story.
Assessment/Monitoring Learning:
Because I did not get to the opinion portion of the lesson, the only assessment that was used was informal observation.
This was a great exercise for formative assessment and allowed me to see another side to the students. It was very
successful formative assessment. It was also helpful that I videotaped this lesson so I can go back and do more carful
observations of the students and myself.
Special Accommodations or Modifications in the Learning Experience Plan, Supporting Learning, or
Assessment/Monitoring required by student needs.

5/24/2016-rev.

I was successfully able to extend certain students thinking during the retelling exercise. I was able to up their level of
questioning in a few instances that allowed them to think beyond the text. This was the only way I was able to
differentiate in this particular exercise due to the group nature of the activity and the fact that I did not get to the final
opinion portion.
