THE EFFECTS OF VIDEO GAMES ON SCHOOL

ACHIEVEMENT
The popularity of video games has grown tremendously over the past twenty
years. Video games are now rival of television and film as entertainment media
for leisure time use.

Video games are highly interactive and adaptive, and often induce a sense of
psychological "flow" in players, where sense of effortless concentration that
makes time fly. Such features make for compelling entertainment, and
promising educational applications. But they might also lead some players to
spend too much time on the couch. And there is also the worry that the content
of certain video games, particularly those with violent themes, might have a
negative effect on behavior.

A recent experimental study, a Scientifics selected a group of boys who didnt

own video games. Then each boy was randomly assigned to one of two
conditions:

The video games now" group got their systems immediately.

The video games later" group didnt receive their systems until months
later after the end of the study.

Researchers tracked the boys academic performance at school, and found

evidence of an effect. Not only did the kids who received game systems spend
less time doing homework, they also performed worse on standardized tests of

reading and writing four months later. Moreover, their teachers were more likely
to report academic problems.

But it's also likely that playing action video games can boost visual spatial skills
and perhaps even help dyslexic children improve their reading ability. In many
video games, the skills required to win involve abstract and high level thinking.
These skills arent even taught at school. Some of the mental skills enhanced
by video games include:

Following instructions.
Problem solving and logic.
Hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skills.
Planning, resource management and logistics.
Multitasking, simultaneous tracking of many shifting variables and
managing multiple objectives.

In conclusion, there are both costs and benefits associated with video games.
The kids who regularly play video games are at a slightly increased risk for
developing attention problems at school. And its clear that some kids are out of
control, playing video games so frequently that the games begin to dominate
their lives. Consequently, the effects of video games on school achievement
depend on the content of the game.

Like suggestion, I think that parents must understand that play a vital role in the
education of their child, whatever childs age. Therefore, theyre responsible for
keeping watch on the activities of your children. If parents don't spend time with
their children, they can't expect their children's performance improves.
